Chapter 98 I Want to Leave
There was no way it was someone from her past; her new identity was rock solid.
But whoever it was, stirring up trouble at Chrysanthemum Alley was tantamount to violating her taboo
The folks living there were mostly elderly.
The guy was shaking, scared out of his mind. "I don't know. We just do odd jobs; someone higher up pays us, and we do it. I really don't know who sent us."
His words were somewhat incoherent.
But Adeline caught on. "You guys are on a job?"
The guy glanced at his buddy on the ground.
Seeing this, Adeline just stomped on his hand with her black boot.
The guy curled up in pain, slapping his hand frantically. "Yes!"
Adeline finally moved her foot, looking at the guy whose face had gone pale. "Looks like you're the leader. Spill it, what's the job?"
"To make you leave Eldoria, by any means necessary." The guy raised his aching hand, not daring to think of anything else. "Maybe you should think about if you have any enemies."
Adeline let go of his hand casually. "Too many to count."
Charles, standing nearby, chuckled. His suit was spotless. He looked at Adeline, his eyes deep and captivating.
Adeline raised an eyebrow. "Just cause you're good-looking doesn't mean you can mock people."
Charles stepped closer, fixing her messy hair from the fight, his voice hoarse. "Need Patrick to help you investigate?"
"Nah." Adeline listened to his voice, not caring much about his actions. "Didn't you take your lozenges?"
Charles laughed. "I did, but I had a meeting. Wanted to wait for you to come back and tell you before I left."
Adeline checked his wrist, nodding towards the thugs. "You guys, keep talking."
"About what?"
"How you got the job." Adeline smiled, her tear mole looking enchanting. "Do I need to teach you the rules?"
The thugs were startled, thinking Adeline looked more like a bandit than they did!
"We used to do small loans, but you know, collecting debts requires a lack of conscience, and we just couldn't do it," the guy said forcefully.
Adeline raised an eyebrow. "Do you think about your conscience when you follow a defenseless girl at night?"
One guy mumbled, "Someone like you isn't exactly defenseless."
Adeline pretended not to hear.
Charles was still laughing, his eyes bright and teeth white. "Didn't expect you to be not only good at medicine but also a badass in other areas, like fighting, and your grades."
Adeline shot him a warning look.
To Charles, her eyes were stunning, adding a touch of charm instead of threat.
Her lips, slightly parted, exuded a youthful fragrance, especially noticeable when she was protecting him.
When they got back from Albion, he might show her through actions whether he liked men or women.
Adeline didn't care what Charles was thinking. She looked at the leader. "What's your name?"
