Chapter 32 Severing Ties
The herbal cuisine book was Summer's jam.
Summer was all about food. She'd kick back on the recliner in the yard, yapping about what dishes to order next.
But Summer's little yard got totally wrecked!
Adeline's eyes flashed cold for a sec.
She marched straight into the inner courtyard.
A kid dressed like a masseur saw her coming, dropped the wooden bucket he was holding, and looked like he was about to spill the beans.
Adeline gave him a gentle pat on the shoulder, her eyes deep and voice steady. "Robert, chill out. Just tell me what went down."
Robert Walker was a kid Summer found on the street. He was born mute, probably ditched by his family because of it. Lucky for him, Summer had a big heart and took him in, raising him like her own.
After years of Summer's care, Robert could make some basic sounds, but talking was still a no-go. He was a small kid, clean-cut, looking around eleven.
Robert started explaining to Adeline using sign language.
Adeline watched quietly, then muttered, "You said the Jones family did this?" Robert nodded, made a raspy sound, and kept explaining.
Adeline narrowed her eyes. "She told you I'm not with the Martinez Family anymore?"
Robert signed, "Summer's worried about you."
"Worried about me? Pfft," Adeline's smile turned icy, and the yard seemed to get a bit colder. "She should be worried about Angela instead."
Just then, a sigh came from inside.
It was Summer, usually the quiet type.
She rolled out in a wheelchair, looking at Adeline. "She's still your mom, you know."
"Was, not anymore," Adeline shot back. "Summer, she took over the Martinez Family. You didn't fight her for the sake of the kids, saying you liked the simple life. If Henry hadn't given the nod, she wouldn't be so cocky now. Some folks forget their mom once they get hitched. Grandma, you've seen it all, you know what I'm talking about."
Summer stared at the fish tank, looking a bit lost. "I get it. I raised a lousy son, and now I'm paying for it."
Hearing that, Adeline softened a bit.
"Adeline," Summer looked at her, wisdom in her eyes. "I don't want you going after revenge. The Jones family has deep roots in Eldoria and even ties in Zelphoria. I'm worried you'll get caught up in a mess because of me. I'm cutting ties with Henry starting today."
Summer was an elder witch doctor, always calm and collected. She'd never been this determined.
Adeline saw she meant it. But since Summer had made up her mind, she'd wait. Wait for Summer to come around, to let go of the Jones family and those in the Martinez Family who treated her like dirt.
Adeline squatted down, her eyes clear. "Alright. If you don't want me to go, I won't go."
Summer touched her long hair. 'Such a good kid. How could those heartless people abandon her?'
Summer said with tears, "Adeline, my poor child, they don't want you, but I do. I'll back you through school."
"Don't sweat my studies. School and exams are a breeze compared to the medical stuff you taught me. Don't worry, Summer." Adeline pushed her forward. "And enough about me. You're getting older and still love candy. Cut down on the sugar, salt, and oil, got it?"
