Chapter 1028
Elizabeth tightened her grip on the doorknob and turned to look at Alexander.
He stood by the coffee table, his hands hanging helplessly by his sides. The emotion on his face was almost bone-deep sadness. Though they were not far apart, when he looked at her, it felt as if a mountain stood between them, impossible to cross.
Alexander swallowed, licked his lips, and breathed heavily, his body swaying slightly. His stomach felt so uncomfortable, as if he might vomit at any moment.
But what hurt him more was what Elizabeth had just said.
She said, "Let's end it."
But how?
Could her seven years be written off?
Could his guilt and regret be written off?
She could leave him, turn around and love someone else, marry someone else. But what about him? He could never forgive himself for the rest of his life.
How to end it?
"Elizabeth. Tell me, between us, how do we call it quits?" Alexander's voice was hoarse, and the sobbing tone grew heavier.
He seemed on the verge of breaking down.
Elizabeth bit her lip, staring at him, letting her eyes moisten and tears fall.
Her heart ached, more than when she wanted to divorce Alexander.
Back then, she was at least just disappointed and regretful.
But now, she saw hope. She saw that Alexander loved her, even the hope that they could be together until the end.
Elizabeth shook her head, her voice light, as if a breeze could blow it away, "Whatever, we just have no chance. That three-month contract, let's void it. Alexander, don't come looking for me again."
"If you can't follow the rules of the game, you shouldn't have signed that contract." Alexander lowered his voice, with a hint of anger.
Elizabeth clenched her fist and finally pushed the door open.
Behind her, Alexander's pained voice came again, "Why does it have to be this way? What is it between us that we can't get past? Elizabeth, you coward, you don't even dare to try!"
Elizabeth bit her lower lip tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks, her heart aching even more.
She was a coward, but what was he?
"Yes, I am." Elizabeth's words were on the tip of her tongue, but before she could finish.
She heard a thud behind her, followed by the sound of glass shattering on the floor.
Elizabeth's heart trembled, and when she turned around, she saw Alexander kneeling by the coffee table, his hand knocking over a cup, coffee spilling on the floor.
He clutched his stomach with one hand, his head hanging low, his pants wet. His hand slowly gripped his clothes, the pain so intense that he couldn't catch his breath.
His shoulders trembled, but he didn't say a word.
Elizabeth turned around, took a step forward, but then stopped.
Alexander looked up, gasping for air. The room was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
They looked at each other, as if the world had stopped.
He wanted to keep Elizabeth, to keep her with his sincerity.
Not with his illness.
So he stubbornly tried to stand up, but as soon as he managed to stand, he fell onto the coffee table again.
As his knees hit the ground again, he even laughed at himself.
He frowned, then shook his head.
He couldn't stand up, just like he couldn't keep Elizabeth.
The feeling of helplessness consumed him, making him feel lost and sad.
His face was no longer flushed like he had drunk too much, but rather pale.
His hand gripped his clothes, the veins on the back of his hand bulging, he looked at her, his eyelashes lowered, and said bitterly, "Elizabeth, you're leaving me with no options."
Elizabeth bit her lower lip tightly, her palms turning purple from the pressure. Tears fell to her lips, salty and bitter.
Elizabeth stepped forward, walking towards him.
"Is your stomach acting up again?" Her indifferent words made him even more devastated.
Alexander looked at her gentle eyes, his heart aching, not answering her question, but instead asking, "Elizabeth, do you really have to give up on me?"
"I'll get you some medicine, wait for me." Elizabeth wanted to go to the bedside table to get the medicine.
But he grabbed her arm.
His palm was sweaty, and the moment he held her, it was scorching, as if it would burn her.
Elizabeth looked down at him.
