Chapter 153
Alexander took a deep breath. Realizing how ridiculous his actions were, he adjusted his mindset.
Why was he here?
What did Elizabeth and Joseph have to do with him?
He pulled his hand back, glanced at the familiar door number, and walked away.
His focus shouldn't be on Elizabeth; it should be on Esme.
After he left, Elizabeth stepped out with a man.
"I want Mexican food, and you're treating," the man said in a deep voice.
Elizabeth nodded. "Sure, whatever you want."
"Have you thought about what I told you?" he asked.
Elizabeth gave an awkward smile, meaning she hadn't.
The man rolled his eyes and flicked her forehead.
Alexander had just reached Esme's hospital room when he got a text from Kieran.
Kieran: [Alexander! Guess who I just saw? Elizabeth!]
Kieran: [Her car is so distinctive. But why was there a guy with her? He looked pretty handsome!]
Alexander frowned at the texts.
Kieran kept going: [They seemed close. I saw him feeding her cherries. She doesn't seem to need you!]
Alexander's face stayed calm, but his hand clenched into a fist.
If Kieran said one more word, he'd block him.
Kieran: [Elizabeth seems fine without you. If she were anyone else's ex, I'd go after her! Who wouldn't like a beautiful woman?]
Alexander: [Are you tired of living?]
Kieran: [No!]
Alexander: [Don't mention her to me again.]
Kieran kept reminding him that Elizabeth was his ex-wife, which made Alexander even more irritated.
He turned off his phone and saw Esme watching him.
It was odd. Esme had been in the hospital every day, but she looked worse, not better.
"What's wrong?" Alexander asked.
The best doctors were treating Esme, and Henry was always trying to cheer her up with different foods.
But she still looked unwell.
"Alexander," Esme said softly, her eyes lowering. "I'm so unhappy. Nothing makes me happy. I don't want to eat, talk, or sleep. Do you think I'm sick?" She looked at him, her eyes full of emotion.
Alexander frowned, feeling something indescribable.
He ruffled her hair. He knew what she wanted, but he couldn't give it to her.
"Alexander, can you say you love me?" Esme's eyes were misty as she pleaded.
Alexander's sweet words could make her feel more at ease.
But Alexander couldn't say it. He didn't want to lie.
"Alexander, I'm in pain." Esme touched the scar on her back, reminding him she had saved his life and he should love her.
His fingertips touched her scar, his eyes growing more complex.
His hesitation told Esme he didn't love her.
"Is it so hard to say you love me?" Esme's tears fell, feeling extremely wronged.
Alexander smiled gently. "Focus on getting better. Don't think about anything else."
Esme's heart sank again.
She turned away, and the room fell silent.
Alexander's phone rang again.
Kieran sent a picture.
Kieran: [What a coincidence. I'm at the same restaurant as Elizabeth. She's holding hands with that guy, looking so sweet!]
Already irritated, this message made Alexander even more annoyed. He frowned and blocked Kieran's number.
Little did he know, Kieran had one more message that didn't get sent.
