Chapter 139
Lily smiled and said, "You're the guest, and bringing a gift shows the Russell family's good manners."
The phrase "you're the guest" meant Esme would never be Alexander's wife.
Esme's face soured instantly.
Elizabeth smirked and kept eating.
With Lily backing her up, Elizabeth didn't need to deal with Esme.
"Ms. Russell, you haven't had dinner, have you? Join us," Lily invited Esme.
Esme was surprised Lily let her join.
She wouldn't miss a chance to impress Lily, even with Elizabeth there.
The atmosphere suddenly became strange.
Elizabeth reached for some shrimp, and Esme did too.
Elizabeth pulled back, and Esme smiled, doing the same.
Esme glanced at Alexander, hoping he'd peel the shrimp for her.
Lily's eyes narrowed. She saw through Esme and put the shrimp in Alexander's bowl, saying, "Alexander, your wife wants shrimp. Why aren't you helping her?"
Elizabeth looked at Alexander. She was about to say she could do it herself when Lily said mockingly, "Elizabeth, men need direction. If you feel sorry for him, he'll be bossed around by other women!"
Esme gripped her cutlery tighter.
Alexander looked at Lily, who sternly said, "What are you looking at? Peel the shrimp so Elizabeth doesn't go hungry!"
Alexander stayed silent but did as Lily said.
Elizabeth felt like she was dreaming. Alexander was actually peeling shrimp for her.
Esme watched, seething with jealousy.
"Give your wife more food. Look how thin she is!" Lily glared at Alexander. "How can you have children?"
Esme coughed, 'Elizabeth and Alexander having kids?'
Elizabeth ate the shrimp, realizing why Lily invited Esme.
This meal was to embarrass Esme.
Indeed, the elderly were more skillful.
"Grandma, let's eat," Alexander said kindly.
Lily ignored him and asked Esme, "Ms. Russell, don't you think Elizabeth and Alexander's kids would be very attractive?"
Esme's face changed, forcing a smile.
Lily didn't really want Esme there, just warning her that Elizabeth was Alexander's wife, and Esme shouldn't have any ideas.
Esme bit her lip, angry but smiling. She took a sip of water, ready to speak, when Lily sighed, "How can some people still sit here? If a girl can't read the room, she'll never do anything well!"
Esme welled up with tears from the reprimand.
For Alexander, she had endured too much from the Tudor family!
Esme put down her cutlery, stood up, and choked out, "Mrs. Tudor, I know you don't like me. I came today to apologize for the birthday banquet."
"No need!" Lily snorted, "I didn't care about what you sent! Whether real or fake."
Esme bit her lip, feeling deeply hurt.
It meant even if she sent real items, Lily wouldn't care.
"Ms. Russell, since everyone is here, let me be clear!" Lily held Elizabeth's hand.
Elizabeth looked up and found everyone was staring at her.
Alexander's gaze was intense, his brows furrowed, and his face gloomy.
Lily firmly said, "Alexander will only have one wife, and that's Elizabeth! Esme, you'll never be Mrs. Tudor!"
