Chapter 141

She loved Alexander and just wanted to be with him. What did she do wrong?

These past three years have been brutal for Esme.

Elizabeth listened to Alexander comforting Esme. His gentle voice felt like needles in her heart.

She kept glancing at Alexander.

He was so gentle it felt unreal to Elizabeth.

She lowered her eyes and let out a bitter laugh, thinking, 'Alexander, I'm still in the car.'

As they drove into the city, Elizabeth finally said, "Just drop me off here. I'll take a cab back."

Alexander looked at her. She had already unbuckled her seatbelt. "Alexander, thank you."

"Elizabeth, let me take you home," he said softly.

She shook her head. "No need."

Elizabeth felt suffocated and didn't want to stay any longer.

The car stopped by the roadside. Elizabeth opened the door to get out and heard Alexander call her name, "Elizabeth."

"What?" she looked up at him, trying to stay calm while her heart was in turmoil.

"I'm sorry," his voice was low and hoarse.

Upon hearing Alexander's apology, Elizabeth's eyelashes fluttered, and she felt as though her blood ran cold.

His simple statement implied he chose Esme over Elizabeth.

Elizabeth shook her head, holding back tears, and quickly got out of the car. She closed the door and turned her back, afraid she might cry in front of him, making him think she still cared.

After the car drove away, she dared to look at its tail lights.

Her heart ached, and tears fell uncontrollably.

He should apologize countless times.

There were so many things he should apologize for.

Elizabeth wiped her tears. She was in the bustling city center. Everyone looked happy, but she was the only one crying.

Suddenly, it started to rain without warning.

Some people hurried for shelter, while others strolled with umbrellas. Elizabeth walked slowly, letting the rain drench her.

She walked into a luxury store. The place was filled with dazzling clothes and bags, making her eyes blur.

She couldn't help but think of the dress Alexander had bought for her.

Those youthful feelings would stay with her forever.

As she reached to touch a dress, a sharp voice came from beside her. "Ma'am, this is a luxury item. You can't touch it!"

She turned; it was a store clerk.

The clerk looked her up and down like she was a monster.

Elizabeth saw herself in the mirror. She was soaked, looking dirty from head to toe, indeed like a monster.

"Sorry." she nodded in apology.

In a corner not far away, a man put down his magazine, his gaze falling on Elizabeth.

As she was about to leave, a woman walked in. She was dressed luxuriously, adorned with jewelry, a stark contrast to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was dressed simply today because she was meeting Lily.

The woman brushed past Elizabeth, glanced at her, and walked towards the clerk, complaining, "Who is this? She looks so dirty!"

"Ms. King! How do you have time to come to the store today?" The clerk's eyes lit up when she saw Kelly King, trying to please her.

"Just passing by, thought I'd check for new arrivals." Kelly glanced at Elizabeth, curling her lips in disdain, "When do we let vagrants into our store?"

The clerk noticed Kelly's disdain and echoed, "Exactly, coming into a luxury store without considering if she can afford anything. She's dirtying the place. If she wants to avoid the rain, she should find a place that matches her status!"

The two whispered, their gazes like blades, making one feel uncomfortable.

Elizabeth saw the clerk and Kelly through the glass door. The clerk muttered, "So annoying!"

Elizabeth turned around.

The clerk met Elizabeth's cold eyes. She scolded, "Stop looking and get out! You're dirtying our store."

Kelly also glanced at Elizabeth, then lightly tapped her nose with a finger, as if Elizabeth had a strange smell.

She sneered, her face full of disdain for Elizabeth.

Elizabeth could allow others to call her useless. But she would never allow anyone to call her ugly or poor!

Her face turned cold, and she calmly said, "I'll take everything in your store."
