Chapter 966

Elizabeth's gaze fell on Alexander.

He was exchanging pleasantries with a senior, then nodded at him, exuding grace and elegance in every move.

Looking around, there were few women in the room who weren't sneaking glances at Alexander. Even those who came with male companions couldn't help but steal a few looks at him.

The moment Elizabeth looked away, Alexander also glanced over.

Elizabeth was on the phone; he didn't know what she was saying, but she looked relaxed.

On the other end of the line, Aubrey's voice came through, accompanied by the sound of eating, "Elizabeth, why don't you bring Alexander along, and we can all hang out?"

Elizabeth replied, "Sure, Aubrey. You get some rest. I have something to do, so I'll hang up now."

"Thanks for the food you sent me!"

"Good night."

Elizabeth hung up the phone and then sighed.

A gentle voice sounded from behind her, "So gentle, were you talking to Aubrey?"

Elizabeth was startled. She turned around and, sure enough, saw Alexander standing in front of her.

He was holding a piece of cake, intending to offer it to Elizabeth, but before he could raise it, she declined.

"It's too late; I don't want to eat sweets," she said.

Alexander shrugged and set the cake aside.

"It was Aubrey. I just asked someone to send him some food and he called to say he got it," Elizabeth explained.

Alexander responded with a sound and asked, "Are you tired?"

Elizabeth looked up, puzzled.

He glanced down at her high heels.

Earlier at the research institute, Elizabeth mostly wore flat shoes. He remembered she had mentioned before that she preferred flats because they were more comfortable.

Following Alexander's gaze, Elizabeth understood he was asking if she was tired from standing in high heels.

"A little," she answered.

"Then have a seat," Alexander pointed to a nearby sofa.

Elizabeth shook her head, "No need. I'll stay with you a bit longer, then I'll head back. There's a press conference at the institute tomorrow, and I need to get up early to prepare."

Alexander paused.

Because he heard Elizabeth say, "I'll stay with you a bit longer," such gentle words, meant only for him, were long overdue.

He remembered when he was a senior in high school, running every night at school. Elizabeth would wait for him on the track.

No matter how late he ran, she would stay with him, tirelessly.

Sometimes she would fall asleep, but as soon as he got close, she would wake up and ask with a sweet smile, "Finished running? Ready to go home?"

Most of the time, he would urge her to go home first and not wait around.

She would sweetly and shyly say, "I'll stay with you a bit longer."

Back then, Elizabeth was just a freshman in high school, very innocent and well-behaved.

Later in college, she was a freshman, and he was a junior. He was busy preparing for debates and speeches.

She would run from the medical school to Lisbun University every day, keeping him company during his rehearsals.

"I'll stay with you a bit longer, then I'll go."

"I'll stay with you a bit longer, Alexander. Are you hungry? How about I stay until we finish a late-night snack?"

She was always so sweet, with an irresistible charm.

Over time, he got used to Elizabeth being like that.

When did he stop hearing such gentle words?

Probably at the end of their second year of marriage, the beginning of the third.

That was when Esme was at her most pretentious, and he hurt Elizabeth the most.

Elizabeth's attitude towards him began to change; the love in her eyes faded. But she would still soften, and even a gentle word from him would give her the motivation to keep loving him.

"Can you say it one more time?"
