Elizabeth laughed, amused by the playful deference.
Thinking about it, Lila couldn't help but mutter, "Alexander is such an idiot. He's completely blind to what's right in front of him."

"I don't regret anything I did back then. The only thing I wish I could change is how much I hurt my family because of Alexander." Elizabeth lowered her head, absently pushing her food around with her fork.
The scraping sound against the plate was jarring. Elizabeth sighed, "Lila, I'm facing tough choices again."
After saying that, Elizabeth looked up at Lila.
Lila's eyelashes fluttered slightly. "Your dad doesn't approve of you getting back together with Alexander, does he?"
"Nobody does," Elizabeth said with a sad smile.
"So your choice is between listening to your family or following your heart?" Lila asked.
Elizabeth nodded. "Lila, I'm not strong enough. I think I'm falling for Alexander all over again."
Lila gave a bittersweet smile. "Strong? What does that even mean? We can't control our feelings—everyone's known that forever."
"You've always been the level-headed one, Elizabeth. If you're allowing yourself to feel something, you must have your reasons. Don't sell yourself short—you've got this." Lila gently squeezed her friend's hand.
Elizabeth felt tears welling up.
Years ago, when Elizabeth was determined to marry Alexander, Lila had known he didn't truly love her, and she'd tried to make Elizabeth see the truth.
Now, Lila was the one encouraging Elizabeth to find happiness.
