Chapter 421

The flick of a lighter caught her attention.

Elizabeth glanced up to see Alexander, head down, lighting a cigarette.

He blew out a smoke ring, then pulled the cigarette away, looking beat.

The vibe was kinda spooky.

Elizabeth frowned, wanting to say something but holding back.

She dropped her gaze and looked off to the side.

Alexander felt a pang in his chest. Back in the day, whenever he smoked, Elizabeth would make him put it out right away.

Now she just frowned and kept quiet.

"Got nothing to say?" Alexander suddenly asked.

Elizabeth looked up, eyes narrowing. "What should I say?"

Alexander was stumped.

He just stared at Elizabeth, his eyes getting all complicated.

He'd never really looked at her like this before. Now he noticed how stunning her eyes and brows were, with a fierce beauty that could knock you out at first glance.

They locked eyes, but eventually, Elizabeth looked away first.

She was always like this, couldn't handle Alexander's stare.

From high school till now, it never changed, even after they divorced and she said she didn't love him anymore.

But whenever they locked eyes, Elizabeth would always look away first, unable to handle the gaze.

Alexander chuckled softly and took another drag of his cigarette.

Elizabeth probably felt annoyed for looking away first, so she grumbled, "Smoking all the time will make your breath stink."

"Really? I don't smoke that much. You know that." Alexander's tone was chill.

Elizabeth looked at him quietly, then turned her gaze to the distance. "I don't know."

Another awkward silence.

After a while, Elizabeth seriously told Alexander, "Anyway, thanks for the SerenityLeaf. It's a rare and important herb for my grandma. When her research succeeds, we'll thank you properly."

Alexander just stared at her, letting the cigarette burn out slowly.

He didn't say a word.

Elizabeth then asked, "Did you hear me?"

Alexander nodded. "Yeah."

Elizabeth continued, "Let's leave the SerenityLeaf thing at that. Don't forget about the divorce."

Back to the divorce talk.

Alexander felt this weird resistance inside.

It made him super unhappy.

He remembered he was the one always bringing up divorce with Elizabeth, but now it was different.

It was Elizabeth who kept reminding him they needed to divorce.

"Nothing else? Let's go back." Elizabeth said, about to get in the car.

Alexander reached out and grabbed her arm.

Elizabeth turned and met his gaze.

"Stay a little longer," Alexander simply said.

Elizabeth didn't get it.

"I need to go back," Elizabeth refused.

Alexander tightened his grip on her wrist, not letting go.

Elizabeth said, annoyed, "Given our current situation, is this appropriate? If Esme finds out, she'll freak out again. Mr. Tudor, if you really like Esme, you should cherish and love her, not claim to love her while treating me like this." Her gaze fell on Alexander's hand.

Alexander said he liked Esme, yet he was all mixed signals with Elizabeth. What was this supposed to mean?

"Elizabeth. Actually, about Esme, I..." Alexander started, but before he could finish, his phone rang.

It was Nolan.

Alexander hit decline, but Nolan called again, sounding urgent.

In the end, Alexander had to answer.

As soon as he did, his face turned cold. He said he got it and hung up.

Alexander looked at Elizabeth, moved his lips like he wanted to say something, and finally said, "I'll take you home first."

Elizabeth frowned. "Is there trouble at the company?"
