Chapter 107 Blackmailing Clara
Oliver shot up from the hospital bed, blurting out, "Officer, that cemetery is ours. It's my mom's grave, and all the neighbors can vouch for it!"
The cop pulled out a property certificate and said, "Legally, the cemetery belongs to Martin. It's his private property. You're suspected of squatting on someone else's land."
Oliver snatched the certificate and realized, not just the cemetery, but the whole hill was Martin's!
He turned to a just-as-shocked Steven and asked, "So, you really didn't buy that land?"
Steven started cursing, "Why the hell would I want anything to do with your family's graveyard?"
"Then why did you show up in my mom's grave?" Oliver pressed.
"How should I know? Officer, I want to report this too. I was at my old place, and next thing I know, I'm in the Smith family cemetery, buried alive!" Steven exclaimed.
The cop looked at Steven and said, "We checked. You drove overnight to Osflow and ended up in Martin's cemetery."
'Does he think we're idiots? Of course, we checked the surveillance footage. It clearly shows him driving from his family's cemetery to Osflow,' the police thought.
Steven was dumbfounded, thinking, 'How could I have driven to Osflow? I don't remember any of it!'
Hearing this, Oliver almost wanted to slap Steven. "I knew it! You've always had your eye on our land!"
Oliver's mind raced. "Sir, do you have any proof we trespassed?"
"There are two sets of ashes in the grave, which, after examination, belong to Mrs. Smith's grandparents. Surveillance around the cemetery also shows you coming and going. You're coming with us."
Oliver was stunned. 'Besides the mountain patrol, there are actually cameras around the cemetery! Aren't the ashes in the tomb supposed to be Elodie's? How did they become Celeste's grandparents'?
He suddenly remembered Molly saying Celeste sent money to the Brown family every month.
'When did they put the Brown family's ashes in there? So, the place blessed by God has always been protecting the Brown family?' Oliver was fuming. "Fine, fine, sir, I'll go with you!"
Celeste, Declan, and Anouk were still at the police station; he needed to confront them face-to-face!
Seeing Oliver follow the police, Steven reluctantly got out of bed and trailed behind.
Molly, with a smug look, sneered at Clara and left with Lucas.
Clara, teary-eyed, bit her lip and wanted to follow.
A nurse grabbed her and said, "Ms. Smith, your medical bills haven't been settled yet. Come and pay them!"
'Medical bills? I barely have any money. Oliver is stingy with everyone except himself, and my allowance is limited,' she thought.
Reluctantly, Clara followed the nurse to the station and was shocked by the bill! "Why is it so much?"
"Mr. Smith's and Mr. Johnson's medical bills are included, along with emergency and ICU fees, and private room and care costs."
'Why am I stuck with the Johnson family's medical bills? Oliver and Steven always go for the best services, costing seventy to eighty grand, and I don't have that kind of money,' Clara thought.
"I don't even know that family. Why should I pay for them?" she protested.
The nurse gave her a weird look and said, "They claimed you're their daughter-in-law, so the bills are your responsibility."
'So they ditched me to stick me with the bill!' Clara fumed.
The nurse eyed her with disdain. "Trying to skip out on the bill, huh? Dressed so nicely, yet you are so stingy. No wonder you don't get along with your husband's family."
Clara's face burned with shame as her intentions were exposed.
She had no choice but to grit her teeth and use her own money to pay the bill, feeling heartbroken.
Meanwhile, George leaned against a car in the parking lot and dialed Philip's number.
"I've sent them in. Oliver doesn't know that the hill is a nature reserve. Plus, they illegally dug up graves and damaged property. Keeping them locked up for a while shouldn't be a problem," Philip said.
"When did that hill become a nature reserve?" George asked.
Philip shrugged. "I bought the title for it a few days ago."
As a lawyer, Philip knew the most secure ways to get people locked up.
George looked at the report in his hand and said, "No need to keep them in too long. They'll probably seek medical parole. Let them find their own doctors."
According to the medical records, Oliver and Steven were both terminally ill. With their current assets, just paying for medical treatment would bankrupt them, let alone recovering.
Philip casually fiddled with a potted plant in front of him and said, "Don't tell Catherine about this, or the Smith family will bother her again."
"Don't worry, we'll keep it secret. Charles definitely won't say anything either," George assured.
As the next head of the Windsor Group, Charles was shrewd and wouldn't tell Catherine to avoid troubling her.
Meanwhile, Catherine picked up her phone and answered Charles's call. "Charles, what's up?"
"The cemetery issue is resolved. If the Smith family bothers you, just ignore them."
Catherine was curious about the surprise for Oliver in the cemetery that Charles mentioned last time.
Charles chuckled, a hint of pleasure in his voice.
After hearing Charles's explanation, Catherine's mouth dropped open in surprise. "What? So you put Steven in the grave, and the Smith family dug him out?"
Just imagining the scene was horrifying. Oliver, already timid, would probably have nightmares for a long time.
"Yes, I also sent them two medical reports. George and Philip didn't want to tell you, but I think you have the right to know. They deserve having terminal illnesses," Charles said.
His voice was gentle, and Catherine could imagine the warm smile on his face.
"You are part of the Windsor family, not a delicate flower. If you ask, I'll tell you everything."
Even if Charles didn't say anything, Catherine's people could find out, but being valued and respected by family still made her feel warm inside.
She didn't expect Charles to consider such small details and care so much about her feelings!
"Yes, I understand. Thank you," Catherine said.
