Chapter 159 Juniper Suspects Catherine's Other Identity
Aurora and Brandon were floored!
Who would've guessed that Marcus's first love was the one raising their precious daughter?
Philip paused for a second. "Catherine, Elodie's coffin is still at the old Smith house, right? Should we move it to our family cemetery?"
Philip thought, 'Grandpa being like this means that Elodie must've been important to him.'
Catherine shook her head. "No need, grandma liked it there. I don't want to mess with her rest."
Marcus nodded. "Yeah, Elodie always loved the mountains and rivers. As long as she has a maple tree nearby, she's happy."
Marcus and Elodie had met under a giant maple tree, and that shower of maple leaves had stayed with him for years, never fading!
Marcus's eyes were full of memories. He took off his glasses and wiped away his tears, looking at Catherine hopefully. "Can you send me a copy of these photos?"
Catherine nodded. "Grandma recorded a video before she passed, but it's at the Smith Villa. I'll find time to get it."
The video was found when Catherine was opening the safe. At the end of the letter Elodie had written to Catherine, she mentioned she had recorded a video and stored it at the Smith Villa.
Marcus thought for a moment and told Catherine about the trending topics online. "So this was done by someone from the Smith family. Catherine, tell me, who was your grandmother's partner?"
Asking such a question at his age, Marcus felt a bit embarrassed, but luckily, no one in the family laughed at him!
Catherine shook her head. "She had no partner. Grandma always raised me alone. Grandpa, Oliver isn't my grandmother's biological child; she adopted him."
Hearing this, Marcus couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief and muttered softly, "Thank goodness. If that idiot were really her biological son, and she found out after I died that I had someone beat up her son, wouldn't she curse me to death?"
"Grandpa, what did you say?" Catherine asked.
Marcus quickly shook his head, indicating he hadn't said anything!
Philip stroked his chin. "The Smith family are not good people. They treated Catherine and Elodie poorly. Catherine can't go to get the video. What if she runs into trouble at their house? We need to think of a way to make them bring the things to us voluntarily."
Brandon also didn't want Catherine going to the Smith Villa. He looked at Philip. "How will they bring it? Will Oliver be willing?"
'Given his stingy and greedy nature, if he knows the things we want are important to Marcus, will he be willing to bring them voluntarily?' Brandon thought.
Philip patted his chest confidently and raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry, I'll handle it!"
Brandon knew Philip was full of tricks and probably had some mischievous idea in mind. "Alright, just be careful and don't cause trouble for Catherine."
Catherine looked at Marcus and asked, "Grandpa, you said grandma deceived you. What do you mean?"
Marcus sighed. He couldn't figure it out himself! "Elodie and I had a great relationship back then, but once when I returned from a mission, she was lying on the ground covered in blood. I took her to the hospital, and she passed away! All these years, I thought she was long gone. If I had known she was still alive..."
Marcus didn't finish his sentence.
"Then how did you end up marrying Lila?" Catherine asked.
"It's all a mess." As Marcus spoke, he recalled everything from back then, and his eyes gradually deepened! He hurriedly got up and went to his study, pulling out a thick stack of receipt stubs from a tall cabinet. Finally, he picked up a receipt and looked at the worn-out, barely legible words. "I remember sending Elodie to Vinehill Hospital. It really was."
Catherine was floored. 'Vinehill Hospital again?'
"Elodie passed away at Vinehill Hospital back then. I was supposed to bury her properly, but there was an emergency mission. An earthquake had collapsed a district in a neighboring county, and I had to go for rescue. So, I asked Samuel to bury Elodie." At this point, Marcus remembered the look Samuel always had when he looked at him, as if he wanted to say something but couldn't!
Marcus finally understood that he had been deceived by Samuel and Lila! "No, I need to find Lila and get to the bottom of this. What exactly have they been lying to me about!"
Lila was undoubtedly the instigator of this whole mess.
Seeing Marcus leave in a hurry, Brandon worried he might get into trouble and quickly followed. "Dad, wait for me!"
Catherine watched Marcus' and Brandon's backs, her mind suddenly filled with thoughts. 'Brandon isn't Lila's child, but he is indeed grandpa's child. So, did Grandpa Marcus and Grandma Elodie have a child back then? Dad and Grandma Elodie do have some similar features from certain angles, but there are many people who look alike, which isn't enough to be conclusive.'
Catherine went back to her room, picked up her phone, and accessed the internal system of Moon Laboratory.
Catherine: [Do a DNA test to verify if sample D and sample H have a direct blood relationship. Contact me when the results are out.]
[Yes.]
Alkaid's message came in; it was a recording file.
Oliver's voice sounded on the other end. "Arrange for a few people to stage a car accident on Catherine's way to work. It will just be an accident. She took such a valuable treasure from my mom and wants to hide it? What if she sells it herself? That won't do! It is the Smith family's things! This Catherine is so clueless; she should have an accident. I've already found a buyer for the bracelet."
Catherine closed the video and rubbed her temples.
Alkaid's call came in. "Miss, did you see that video? Oliver must be out of his mind! He actually wants to hire someone to stage a car accident to kill you."
Oliver probably never imagined that the hospital was owned by Galactic Aurora Collective, with high-definition surveillance cameras installed in every corner. It just so happened to capture him hiding and discussing plans to kill Catherine!
Catherine said calmly, "Then give him my work route."
"Got it!"
"Also, find out who contacted him to buy that bracelet. I suspect it's someone who used to know Grandma Elodie." Catherine originally thought Elodie was just a gentle and kind village woman and never thought much about it. She didn't expect that her Elodie was almost Marcus's wife. So Elodie's social circle back then shouldn't have been bad. At least Felix and Samuel were her friends!
Alkaid cheerfully agreed. "Got it, boss!"
Facing such a subordinate, Catherine felt a bit exasperated. "Watch less TV dramas and get lost."
At Phoenix Lab, Juniper put on a new lab coat and strode into her office.
Evander glanced at her. "Didn't you get a vacation? Do you like working overtime that much?"
"Catherine went back. If I'm not doing experiments, I have nothing to do," she said.
No matter what Juniper was doing, her mind was always on experiments. Even before going to sleep, she would review experimental data. Taking a vacation would leave her with nothing to do.
Juniper picked up the experimental data Catherine had left behind and suddenly leaned in to sniff it. There was a very faint scent on the paper, somewhat familiar, as if she had smelled it somewhere before.
The more Juniper thought about it, the more something felt off. She walked out of the lab and dialed Alkaid's number. Juniper frowned slightly and got straight to the point. "Hello, I want to ask, what is your boss's name? Does she know me? Or, do I know her?"
