Chapter 13 The Windsor Family's Daughter is not Good Enough for You

Lila got rushed to the hospital right away.

Gavin packed up his gear, glanced at Esme who was hanging around, and said, "No biggie. Lila's got an old issue. She'll be good after a few days of chillin'."

Lila only cracked her eyes open after hearing Gavin say she was alright.

Playing sick was her go-to move. No way Brandon wouldn't show up with his kids to say sorry when he heard. Then she could drag Esme back to the Windsor family and keep Catherine in check.

Seeing Gavin, Esme was so hyped she could barely talk!

This dude was usually just a face on the news. She'd never been to the hospital with Lila before, so this was her first time meeting Gavin.

"Prof. Davis, I'm Esme from the Windsor family. I'm studying medicine too. Would you take me on as a student?" Esme asked.

Gavin chuckled, "First time meeting Mr. Marcus Windsor's granddaughter. Didn't think you'd be into medicine too."

Esme blushed, "Yeah, my grandparents aren't in great shape, so I wanted to learn medicine to take care of them."

There was a flicker of bitterness in her eyes.

'Grandpa told me to stay out of the inheritance fight with my brothers, so he only let me study medicine, not business or finance. I just don't get why, as a Windsor, I don't get a piece of the pie. If I could learn from Gavin, the Windsor fam would see I'm the best!' Esme thought.

Lila laughed, "Esme's my only granddaughter. If she could follow you, I'd be happy."

'The Windsor boys each have their own thing, so Esme shouldn't be any less.' Gavin agreed easily, "Alright, Esme can tag along for a bit. If she's got the chops, I'll mentor her myself."

Esme's eyes lit up: "Thank you, Prof. Davis!"

Gavin asked, "Got any core papers published or led any big research projects?"

Esme went quiet as she thought, 'What's that? I barely go to my regular classes, so how would I have time for research? You can buy that stuff with money anyway.'

Seeing her awkward look, Gavin figured Esme was probably all talk.

Gavin thought, 'Too bad, the Windsor boys are all whizzes, and I'm hoping for a student like George.'

"I have to do my rounds. Hit me up in a couple of days," he said.

"Okay!"

Imperia City, Bright Heal Hospital, Special Care Ward

Gavin smiled warmly at Marcus, who was lying in bed, and said, "Mr. Windsor, you're in pretty good shape. Keep up the exercise."

"I'm getting old. My granddaughter will come by later to take me out for some sun."

Mentioning Catherine, Marcus's face lit up with a kind smile.

Gavin walked out and bumped into Alexander, who was there to see Felix.

"Prof. Davis, how's Felix doing?"

Gavin handed over a report and said, "All the numbers are good, but his blood pressure's high. He needs to watch his diet."

Alexander took the report and looked it over carefully, saying, "Thanks. I've looked into the prescription issue. Can you come with me for a sec?"

The prescription mess had been weighing on Gavin's mind.

These patients were high-profile, and there couldn't be any slip-ups, let alone causing a death.

Gavin quickly followed Alexander and said, "I've got some killer coffee in my office. Wanna try?"

In the office, the room was filled with the aroma of coffee.

"The last incident was tied to the dark web assassin group, Abyssal Blades. They teamed up with hospital staff to mess with your prescription. The culprits have been caught."

Gavin was shocked, "Foreign forces?"

Alexander nodded, sipping his coffee, "The folks recovering here have unique backgrounds. Lots of foreign eyes on them. The previous attack on Marcus was their doing too."

Gavin's forehead was slick with sweat, and he said, "Got it. Thanks. I heard you and Ms. Windsor are still engaged?"

Alexander looked up and smiled, "You're not usually into gossip. Why bring it up?"

Gavin hesitated for a sec, the image of Esme's pretty but empty face, especially those eyes filled with nothing but self-interest, flashed in his mind, making him uneasy. Then he said,

"If you trust me, Ms. Windsor ain't the right match for you."

'For a guy like Alexander, the woman by his side should be someone who really complements him. Esme, in any way, doesn't seem to fit the bill.'

Alexander was a bit taken aback, but he just smiled gently while holding his cup and didn't say anything more.

The night was deep, and the thick darkness blanketed the edges of the city.

A blade was drawn, pressing against the assassin's vulnerable throat.

Catherine coldly asked, "Where's the director of Angel's Haven Orphanage?"

The assassin's eyes were filled with shock. 'How does she know we took him?'

"Blackfire, you think you can rule the world? Your crew will eventually be replaced by Abyssal Blades!"

The three major assassin groups on the dark web, Faceless Ones, Shadow Syndicate, and Abyssal Blades, were rivals and checks on each other.

The assassin fell to the ground, and Catherine rubbed her wrist before turning to walk into a nearby underground fighting arena.

"Kill him!"

"Come on! Beat that arrogant guy to death!"

The shouts were deafening, and the fighters' punches were aimed at their opponents' vital points in the octagon ring.

The owner of the fighting arena bowed in front of Catherine and said, "Miss, someone specifically requested your services, offering sixty million dollars."

Catherine shook her head, "Take me to the lounge. I'm not fighting today."

"OK, please follow me."

Inside the underground fighting arena was the largest information trading market in Imperia City, where info was auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Catherine put on a mask and sat in the VIP section, staring at the auctioneer introducing the info on stage.

"This piece of information is about the international crackdown on the dark web. The starting bid is fifty thousand dollars."

Every year, international organizations would crack down on the dark web, with arms dealers, smugglers, and assassin groups being notorious targets.

Catherine wasn't interested in this info.

If it were that easy to be wiped out, the Faceless Ones would have been history long ago.

In the end, the info sold for sixty thousand dollars.

"The next piece of information is about Vinehill Hospital from eighteen years ago. The starting bid is one million dollars."

The crowd was in an uproar!

"What info is worth a million bucks? Last time, the identity of a crime boss was worth only fifty thousand dollars. And something from eighteen years ago? Who would buy such old info?"

Catherine raised her paddle and called, "One and a half million dollars."

The crowd fell silent. 'Someone actually wants to buy this info? And it's someone in the VIP section. This info must be valuable.'

"One point six million dollars."

Catherine raised her paddle again, "One point seven million dollars."

The neighboring VIP room followed closely, "One point eight million dollars."

"Two million dollars." Catherine raised again.

"Two point five million dollars." the neighbor also.

Catherine fell silent as she thought, 'Vinehill Hospital is the closed hospital next to Angel's Haven Orphanage. Who else, like me, is interested in info about Vinehill Hospital?'

"Two point six million dollars." Catherine continued.

The neighboring VIP room continued to raise the bid, "Three million dollars."

In the VIP room, Alexander calmly raised his paddle, continuously increasing the bid.

This info was insignificant to him, but since Blackfire was investigating Angel's Haven Orphanage, she would definitely be interested in this info.

Thinking of that slender and graceful figure, a slight smile appeared on Alexander's lips.

Catherine did not raise her paddle again and thought, 'Who knows the extent of this info? If it turns out to be just a few words, I would have wasted my money.'

The auction house did not offer after-sales service.

"Three million dollars, going once, three million dollars, going twice, three million dollars, sold! Congrats to VIP number nine!"
