Chapter 270 The Truth Behind Charles and His Ex-Girlfriend's Breakup

The ward got super quiet all of a sudden.

Jessa was totally shocked to find out that George and Esme were actually related!

The Windsor Family never publicly acknowledged Esme, but she couldn't help but stir up some drama. At school, she was always bragging about Marcus's identity.

George tried to calm her down, "Don't worry, she's not a Windsor anymore! She said she'd make it impossible for you to finish your residency. That's just nonsense."

Philip had already sued Esme and Richard's production team.

Esme was still begging for money everywhere yesterday, probably trying to hire a good lawyer. But seriously, how many lawyers can beat Philip in court?

"She's probably going to jail, but I want to know what other bad stuff she's done! Even though the Windsor Family never acknowledged her, we'll try to make it right for you!" George said.

The Windsor kids were all super responsible.

Even though Jessa's situation had nothing to do with the Windsor Family, Esme used their name to hurt Jessa!

Jessa quickly refused. "No, Mr. Windsor, since your family has nothing to do with her, you shouldn't have to deal with her mess! If she goes to jail, I'll be happy. Besides, Catherine and Juniper saved my life."

"Esme didn't do much at school; she was hardly ever there. But I did hear her on the phone once." Jessa hesitated, biting her lip before saying anything. She glanced at Catherine and whispered, "Can you bend down?"

Catherine nodded, leaned in close, and listened to Jessa's whisper.

After hearing what Jessa had to say, Catherine was in shock! "Really?"

Jessa nodded. "Yeah, she was probably talking to her grandmother, and she sounded really proud."

Catherine was speechless, thinking, 'If what Jessa said is true, then Esme has been in touch with Charles's ex-girlfriend and told her she's the future daughter-in-law of the Windsor Family! And Lila knew about it! Or maybe Lila even planned it?'

After all that, Jessa was exhausted and needed to rest.

After leaving the ward, Catherine told Juniper and George what Jessa had said.

Juniper's jaw dropped. "What? Esme said she had a kid with Charles? That's insane! She wasn't even old enough then!"

George took a moment to calm down. "So those rumors from the gossip sites about Charles having an illegitimate child are because of this? Charles's girlfriend might not have believed the gossip but believed Esme who approached her."

Catherine nodded. "Yeah, in that situation, it's normal for Charles's ex-girlfriend to believe Esme."

So Charles's ex probably left without a word because she was heartbroken.

The three of them exchanged looks.

Juniper asked, "Should we tell Charles about this? But didn't he say she's already married? We can't ask Charles to break up a marriage, can we?"

George looked at Catherine. "Catherine, you should tell him."

"Are you serious?" Catherine asked.

George smiled knowingly. "Charles cares about you the most; he won't get mad at anything you say! No matter what Charles thinks, he deserves to know the truth! What happens next isn't our problem. We trust Charles to do the right thing."

Juniper nodded. "Makes sense. Catherine should tell him. Charles definitely won't get mad at you, but if we tell him, who knows."

Catherine, feeling a bit lost, stepped into the hallway and dialed Charles's number, giving him a quick rundown of the day's events. "Charles, are you listening?"

"Yeah, Catherine, I got it. Thanks for letting me know." Charles's voice sounded a bit rough.

"Charles, aren't you going to explain it to her?"

Charles let out a bitter laugh and shook his head, his eyes drifting to the distant beach. He had just wrapped up a business meeting and was feeling the weight of exhaustion. He sighed. "Catherine, if someone came up to you and said Alexander had a kid, what would you do?"

Catherine thought about it seriously. "I wouldn't believe it."

Even though she never fully understood her feelings for Alexander, if someone hit her with that kind of news, she'd dig into it herself.

"At the very least, I'd ask him. I wouldn't jump to conclusions or misunderstand someone without a good reason; that's just not fair." Even if it wasn't Alexander, Catherine would still handle it the same way.

Charles smiled, feeling a bit relieved. "That's my sister. So, the issue between her and me isn't just Esme and Lila's meddling. She never wanted to come home to meet my family. I thought it was because she felt pressured, but it was also because she didn't trust me or our relationship enough."

Back in the day, Charles couldn't figure out why Gabriella always kept her distance. Now, with time and experience, he wasn't the naive young man anymore and finally got where she was coming from. He hadn't addressed her insecurities and lack of confidence, and she hadn't believed he'd stick by her.

Charles picked up a glass of champagne, the clear liquid swirling in his long fingers, catching the light. "Don't worry about me; I know what I need to do."

"Okay, come back soon." After Charles hung up, he stared at the waves and finished his champagne.

Charles muttered to himself, "The tide's gone out."

'And we can't go back either,' he thought.

At Imperial University, in the Principal's Office.

There was a knock on the door, and Franklin's voice came from inside. "Come in."

Catherine, with her backpack slung over her shoulder, walked into the office. "I'm here to apply for course exemptions."

Franklin took off his glasses, his gaze settling on Catherine. "You know, as a student, studying is your main job. Why don't you want to attend so many courses? If that's the case, why did you even come to college?"

Catherine replied calmly, "My grandmother wanted me to come."

Franklin paused, clearly not expecting such a straightforward reason for Catherine being in school. "You shouldn't take your studies lightly. I don't agree to your exemptions; you need to attend all your courses on time. If you don't show up, I'll mark you as failing!"

Catherine frowned slightly, eyeing the stern and somewhat unkind Franklin.

Franklin was about the same age as Marcus, but his eyes always had this unreadable look that made Catherine uneasy.

She nodded and pulled out a prepared withdrawal application from her bag. "Alright then, please sign this."

Franklin looked at the application. "Are you kidding? Didn't you promise your grandmother you'd go to college? Are you treating this like a joke? Didn't the Windsor Family teach you to keep your promises?"

Catherine shrugged, saying helplessly, "I promised my grandmother I'd attend college, not that I'd graduate."
