Chapter 268 Catherine Stood Firm to Protect George

George freaked out and dashed over to check on Catherine. "Catherine, did you get hurt in the mountains and didn't tell us?"

"George, chill out. I'm not the one being resuscitated," Catherine said, standing right in front of him, perfectly fine. "Besides, Juniper and I don't even have the same blood type."

Gavin took off his mask. "The one being resuscitated is Eddy's resident, Jessa. She tried to kill herself by slitting her wrists. We saved her, but she's in a bad place mentally. She needs close monitoring."

George frowned. "Then why did Catherine go into the operating room?"

Gavin explained calmly, "I noticed Catherine has a knack for medicine, so I wanted her to learn some clinical skills. I've already signed all the necessary paperwork."

Catherine didn't need Gavin to get her into the OR; she just didn't want to reveal her identity and always used Gavin's name to book it.

George was even more confused. "How come I didn't know Catherine was into medicine?"

Catherine raised an eyebrow, dodging the question. "Why did Jessa try to kill herself?"

A nearby resident, still crying, pulled out a suicide note from Jessa's pocket. "She was too exhausted, saying she couldn't take it anymore."

The note read: [I'm sorry. I'm not a good doctor. I'm so tired. I could have taken a break, but why do I still have to work overtime? Endless medical records, assisting in surgeries without learning anything, always doing menial tasks. I can't even go home for the holidays. I haven't had a good sleep in over seventy hours. My heart feels like it's going to explode, but why do I still have to go to work? I can finally rest now. Goodnight. This world is great, but I won't be coming back next time.]

The note wasn't long, but every word was filled with despair. It was clear Jessa was truly hopeless when she wrote it.

The resident was sobbing uncontrollably. "Why did she have to be so desperate? We were almost done with our residency, and the future was supposed to get better."

Catherine handed her a pack of tissues, her gaze falling on George. "George, do residents in your hospital always get exploited like this?"

George shook his head. "No, at least the residents Gavin and I supervise get their regular breaks. There's no need to make students work overtime to finish medical records."

A middle-aged doctor in a white coat came down from another operating room, having heard the news, and rushed over. "How is she? Is she okay? Why would she do something like this?"

The newcomer was Jessa's mentor, Eddy Bowers.

Catherine's gaze fell on Eddy, and she said calmly, "It's because you didn't let her rest and exploited her that she became desperate. If you want to know why, you should ask yourself."

Eddy's face turned bright red. "That's nonsense! We're all doctors; who hasn't gone through this phase? Did I make her stay up all night writing medical records? That's her own lack of ability! I never had to stay up all night to write medical records! I've gone three days and nights without leaving the operating table. If I can endure that, why can't she handle writing a medical record? You young people today are just too fragile and selfish!"

'Jessa just couldn't handle the pressure. Which doctor hasn't been through this? Even George, a genius, had a tough time during his residency. But George is strong and has a powerful family, so his residency was cut short,' Eddy thought. "Not everyone is George. Regular folks have to climb the ladder step by step! If one wants to be a doctor, they need some grit. If they can't handle a few setbacks and endure hardships, they should switch careers early!"

Catherine frowned slightly, looking at Eddy, who was speaking so confidently and refusing to admit any fault. She said calmly, "If you have so much faith, would you let your child become a doctor and be on call 24/7 during their residency, writing reports without rest? Would you agree to that?"

There was an unwritten rule for Eddy's residents: they had to be on call at all times. Otherwise, they wouldn't get their residency certificate, and their future studies and career plans would be in jeopardy! The residents had to endure it, but some just couldn't take it anymore.

During the resuscitation, Catherine noticed that Jessa's body was already on the verge of collapse. Even if she hadn't attempted suicide, she was at high risk of dying suddenly from overwork.

Eddy was silent, thinking, 'Of course, I wouldn't want my child to become a doctor under those conditions!'

Seeing his silence, Catherine gave a mocking smile. "So have you ever thought that the people you're exploiting are also someone else's children?"

Eddy retorted, "You don't understand anything! Being a resident is supposed to be like this!"

George pulled Catherine to his side, looking at Eddy coldly and warily. "Eddy, my residents don't go through that, and they still complete their residency successfully. If you think exploitation is necessary for improvement, I'll apply to the hospital to send you to Zafrica for aid work to improve yourself."

'Zafrica? If I really go to Zafrica, all my chances for promotion in the hospital will be gone!' Eddy thought.

Catherine's gaze turned icy. "You took the students' papers, put your name on them, and won quite a few awards. Several of the corresponding authors on those papers seem to be your wife, right? As far as I know, your wife isn't a scholar in the medical field. It's quite surprising that she could write such excellent papers."

Eddy broke out in a cold sweat, thinking, 'I've been exploiting students for a long time, but isn't that common in the industry?'

Juniper, furious, said, "As a fellow researcher, I despise people like you! You are Eddy, right? I'll report you with my real name right now."

As a researcher, Juniper had some influence in the research community. If she reported Eddy, all his papers would be thoroughly investigated. Then everything would be over!

Eddy gritted his teeth, his chubby legs trembling! "George, you're just competing with me for a title and trying to frame me. I'm not afraid. How can you send me to Zafrica? Even if you report me, you can't just make things up. I can report you and the Windsor Family for manipulating everything! Why do you always get the top evaluations, George?"

Eddy had forgotten that he and George were not on the same level as surgeons, still comforting himself and thinking that even though Juniper was a researcher, they weren't in the same field.

Catherine lowered her head, tapping on her phone screen.

Half a minute later, everyone's phones suddenly rang. Looking down, they saw a report initiated by the Galactic Aurora Collective Lab!

[Report: Eddy Bowers, a surgeon at Imperia City Hospital, for academic misconduct and exploiting students, leading to a student's suicide. Reporter: Galactic Aurora Collective, Alioth.]
