Chapter 38 "You Can Eat the Apple Peel Too."
VIP ward, Bright Heal Hospital, Imperia City.
Lila squinted her eyes, lying on the bed like she owned the place, glaring at Catherine who just strolled in. She snorted, "What time do you call this? You got no respect for me, huh?"
Catherine shot back, "It's seven in the morning. Can't you read a clock? Pretty sure we covered that in elementary school. Maybe I should get you one of those digital ones that talks."
The wall clock was right next to Lila's bed, so there was no way she couldn't see it.
'She must not know how to read a clock,' Catherine thought.
Lila was fuming, her chest heaving with anger.
"Fine, you wanna piss me off, don't you? I asked you to take care of me."
Catherine, unfazed, said, "Lila, you're way too worked up. Maybe we should get a neurologist to check you out."
Lila's face twisted in anger, looking at Catherine who reminded her of Aurora. She spat, "Hmph, don't think you're gonna have it easy here. Get over here, I want an apple. Peel it for me."
Catherine sat down, grabbed an apple from the fruit basket, and started peeling it.
As soon as she finished, Lila frowned, "What kind of peeling is this? You took off half the apple! What am I supposed to eat?"
Catherine held up the apple peel and said, "If you don't like the flesh, you can eat the peel, but I wouldn't recommend it."
Lila was livid!
'A girl from the countryside is different. Who knows how many rough farm chores these hands have done. Peeling an apple is something people of our social standing would never do ourselves.'
Lila looked at Catherine with disdain and said, "I don't want it anymore. Get me a cup of hot water."
Catherine got up, poured a cup of water, and handed it to Lila.
"Damn girl, are you trying to burn me?" Lila shouted.
Catherine pulled out a thermometer and measured the water, saying, "This water is 104 degrees Fahrenheit. If you think it's too hot, there might be something wrong with your brain."
Lila was speechless.
'Who carries a food thermometer around?'
"Are you cursing me to have brain problems? You're really trying to drive me to my grave! Is this how Brandon and Aurora taught you? Truly a good daughter of the Windsor family!"
"Thanks for the compliment. I think I'm pretty good too," Catherine said.
"Go to the nurse's station and get my meds for today. Just seeing you annoys me!"
"Okay."
Catherine walked out of the ward to the nurse's station and picked up Lila's meds for the day.
Looking at the medicine box in her hand, Catherine frowned slightly.
"Are all these Lila's meds?"
The nurse quickly explained, "Yes, some of them are ones Lila specifically requested. We just prepare them as she asks. We don't know much else!"
Catherine frowned slightly.
'Self-prescribed? Can patients add their own meds these days?'
The nurse, looking troubled, said, "She told us not to inform Gavin, or she'd file a complaint against us. We can't afford to cross Lila!"
'I know enough about Lila's character. She is indeed capable of bullying others, and these newly graduated nurses couldn't stand up to her,' Catherine thought.
"I understand. You can go back to your work."
'These meds are clearly problematic! But it's obvious they aren't prescribed by the medical staff. Lila adds them herself.'
Thinking for a moment, Catherine took out her phone to call Gavin.
"This is Catherine. Can you come to Bright Heal Hospital when you have time?"
"You finally decided to call me! I'm on my way! Wait for me!"
Gavin wanted to keep talking, but Catherine hung up and blocked his number.
'That doc yaps too much, giving me a headache.'
"I got the meds."
Lila sat up, took the meds from Catherine, and gave her the stink eye.
"Did you switch my meds? They look different from what Esme usually brings."
Catherine figured Lila was just paranoid.
'Who’s got time for that?'
"You can check the surveillance footage. I got it straight from the nurse's station."
"Hmph, I bet you don’t have the guts. Don’t think you can do whatever you want in the Windsor family just 'cause I’m not home. As long as I’m alive, you won’t step through the Windsor family’s door!"
Catherine replied coolly, "I go in every day."
'How else would I get home?'
Lila was about to blow a gasket!
'This Catherine, just like Aurora, is impossible to like! She’s a jinx, nothing like the sweet Esme.'
After taking her meds, Lila started bossing Catherine around again.
"Come, help me to the bathroom."
"When did you become paralyzed?"
"What do you mean by that! Are you cursing me?!"
Catherine asked, puzzled, "If you’re not paralyzed, you should be able to go to the bathroom by yourself. If you can’t, I’ll call the doc to get you a catheter."
Lila cursed under her breath, but seeing Catherine’s innocent face, she had no choice but to go to the bathroom herself.
'This Catherine is nothing like the well-behaved and adorable Esme! Esme would always help me to the bathroom!'
After using the bathroom, Lila started sighing, "Oh, why am I so unlucky?"
"Are you planning to divorce Marcus?" Catherine asked.
Lila instantly felt no pain in her head or back, her fingers trembling as she pointed at Catherine.
"You’re driving me up the wall! What do you mean by that? Did Aurora teach you to say that? I knew Aurora had bad intentions!"
Catherine’s eyes were calm as she looked at the increasingly hysterical Lila and said, "If you’re not divorcing Marcus, then you’re actually quite lucky, don’t you think?"
Lila came from a poor background, rising to prominence after marrying Marcus. Over the years, she had often used her name as Marcus’s wife to bully others.
'It must be Aurora’s doing!'
Lila almost couldn’t catch her breath, and the meds soon put her to sleep.
Catherine tucked her in and left the ward.
Gavin hurried over, seeing a girl who looked like a high school student standing outside Lila’s ward. She didn’t look very old, her face bright and attractive, like a stunning and elegant moon. But she still had some baby fat, making her look early teens.
"Are you Catherine? I’m Gavin!"
"That’s me. Let’s talk over here."
"Come to my office. We won’t be disturbed there."
"Alright."
Once the office door was closed, Gavin looked excited and asked, "Have you finally decided to join my lab?"
"No, there’s no future in it."
"How can you say that! Our lab has the best equipment in the country, second only to George’s lab!"
Catherine handed the meds to Gavin.
"Lila’s meds have a big problem. Take a look."
Gavin examined it carefully. When he realized what it was, cold sweat almost dripped down his face!
"Isn’t this the infamous black market drug, Vitality Pills? This stuff can be deadly if taken too much!"
Vitality Pills were notorious, not because they were miraculous, but because they caused many hallucinations, making patients believe they were cured, leading to mental instability. In severe cases, they could cause drug dependence or even death!
'How did Vitality Pills end up in Lila’s meds! This isn’t something he prescribed!'
