Chapter 8 Baby, You're Finally Home!
Alexander plopped the chess piece back on the board and was about to bounce out of the hospital room.
Just as he stepped out, he almost smacked into a frazzled Gavin. "Gavin, what's up? Here for a consult?"
Gavin wiped the sweat off his forehead when he saw Alexander. "Mr. Howard, I got a call saying my prescriptions were messed with, and a patient died from post-op complications because of it. I came to check it out."
He glanced around but couldn't spot who he was looking for.
Alexander noticed and raised an eyebrow. "Looking for someone?"
Gavin let out a frustrated sigh. "Yeah, I told you about that medical whiz I wanted for my lab. Looks like I missed her; she's already gone."
"Anyone you call a genius must be something else."
Realizing he wouldn't find her, Gavin sighed again.
"If only you had gone into medicine, you'd be a genius too. But you're all about making money."
Alexander just smiled, not saying a word.
Outside the hospital, the driver, Dylan, had already cleaned the car and was waiting respectfully for Catherine.
"Miss, did you meet Mr. Windsor?"
Catherine nodded and got into the car.
Now that the car was clean, she could tell it was a special ride for government or military bigwigs.
'The car's got bulletproof gear. Based on the research reports I've seen and how those people treated Marcus earlier, it's not hard to guess Marcus's identity. This family has nothing to do with the poverty Oliver mentioned. Maybe they keep a low profile because of their special status? As for those who tried to kill Marcus today, I won't let them off either.' Catherine thought.
Dylan chuckled, "Mr. Marcus Windsor has been missing you for a long time. Mr. Windsor and Mrs. Windsor just called. They're waiting for you at home!"
Catherine nodded.
She now knew her family wasn't the poor folks Oliver had described.
Even though she was mentally prepared, Catherine was still a bit stunned when Dylan drove the car straight into Stardust Manor Residences, the priciest neighborhood in Imperia City.
Even the smallest house in Stardust Manor Residences could buy five of The Smith Mansion!
And Dylan parked in the villa area of Stardust Manor Residences! "Miss, we're home."
Catherine looked at the grand villa and the 3,300-square-foot garden in front of her, a bit surprised. She thought, 'A 3,300-square-foot garden might not be much, but this is Imperia City!'
At the villa entrance, Brandon and Aurora were already waiting.
As soon as Catherine got out of the car, the couple threw the ribbons in their hands, with a large group of servants behind them holding flowers, the ribbons flowing over Catherine like a grand celebration.
They shouted in unison, "Welcome home!"
Catherine was silent as she thought, 'What kind of spectacle is this?'
Dylan, seeing Brandon and Aurora's enthusiasm, was relieved that Catherine hadn't been mistreated despite being away for so many years, then drove off to report back to Marcus.
Catherine was covered in flying ribbons.
Brandon and Aurora rushed up, each grabbing one of Catherine's hands.
Aurora hugged her directly.
"Sweetheart! You're finally back! I missed you so much that I could only eat three meals a day, one afternoon tea, and one midnight snack!"
Catherine was speechless as she thought, 'You're not missing a single meal.'
This hug was very warm.
She couldn't remember Celeste ever hugging her like this, but she often saw Celeste holding Clara to comfort her.
Catherine had always thought that was all a mother could offer.
Turns out, a mom's hug is so gentle and warm, like a spring breeze.
After crying, Aurora pulled back to get a good look at Catherine, who had a face kinda like hers, with skin as soft as a peeled egg, standing all dainty in front of her.
Seeing how beautiful and well-grown Catherine was, Aurora's tears started flowing again.
Holding Catherine, she felt how thin she was, like a stick, even though she was almost 67 inches!
She wondered if the Smith family had mistreated her daughter.
Dylan had mentioned on the phone that the Smith family was super poor, living in a tiny house, even without a separate room for the nanny.
"You've had a rough time, sweetheart. It's good to be home. I'll protect you from now on!"
Brandon nodded vigorously beside her, "Yeah, our family might not be super rich, but we can definitely keep you well-fed and clothed!"
Catherine looked at the row of luxury cars parked on the lawn behind Brandon without saying a word.
Brandon, following her gaze, slapped his forehead and said,
"Oh, you must like gardens, right? Our garden is a bit small. I'll buy you a castle and estate in Françaisia for your vacation!"
Aurora, holding Catherine's hand, carefully asked, "Sweetheart, do you prefer an estate in Françaisia or Istalia? Royal ones are fine too, though it's a bit of a hassle to evict them first."
'The royal family living comfortably in their own home, and this couple wants to evict them with just a word?'
"No need, anywhere is fine. I don't want to go abroad for now," Catherine said.
Aurora and Brandon immediately nodded, "Alright, we'll buy one domestically then. I have a 1,500-acre garden in Shanglia. Now, it's yours."
Inside the villa, it was lavishly decorated. There were trash cans worth serious dollars, floors from famous brands, priceless chandeliers, expensive antiques, and master-level collections everywhere...
The bracelet on Aurora's wrist was auctioned for a sky-high price last month on the international market.
Previously, many wealthy businessmen had competed for it at the auction.
Unexpectedly, it was the Windsor family who had won it.
Aurora noticed Catherine's gaze, saying, "Do you like this bracelet? It's yours now!"
Seeing Aurora about to put it on her, Catherine stopped her, "No, I like amethyst."
More importantly, thinking about the auction money, 80% of it had gone into her own pocket, making Catherine feel a bit speechless.
The maid, Lucy Ross, pouted. 'This bracelet is something Esme Windsor liked and has asked Aurora for several times, but Aurora never agrees to give it. This bumpkin from the countryside really doesn't know what's good. Amethyst isn't worth much, just glass-made.'
Aurora immediately agreed, "Amethyst is great, very spiritual. I have a nice set of violets in my room. I'll send them to you tonight!"
She suddenly wondered how much of the stones cut by the King of Gambling had ended up in the Windsor family's pockets.
Brandon led Catherine to the living room, sitting down, and said,
"Your room is ready. If you don't like it, we'll change it. We wanted to give you our room, but the furniture is old!"
Aurora handed over a bunch of food, "Sweetheart, eat more. You are too thin. Did the Smith family not give you enough to eat?"
The Smith family might have been indifferent to her, but they did feed her.
