Chapter 49 Marcus's Scheme to Interrogate Esme
'Black Market Miracle Drug!' Alexander had definitely heard of Vitality Pills before!
The Shadow Syndicate had tried to snag the group behind Vitality Pills, posing as the Howard Group, but all their efforts just vanished into thin air. This showed that the folks behind Vitality Pills were no joke.
"How did this stuff end up in Felix's meds?" Alexander asked.
Annie pulled up the surveillance footage from Felix's hospital room.
Felix's eyes popped wide open. "When did you put cameras in my room? Didn't I tell you not to?"
Alexander's face was stone-cold. "It's for your safety."
"I don't care! I'm eighty-six, don't I get some privacy? This is a total invasion of my rights. I'm gonna sue you!"
Ignoring Felix's rant, Alexander played the footage. "It was Esme who brought the meds. How'd she get her hands on this stuff?"
Marcus looked just as grim.
'Esme's still part of the Windsor family. If word gets out that someone from the Windsors messed with Felix's meds, the whole family would be too ashamed to face the Howards!'
"Catherine, what exactly does this stuff do?" Alexander asked.
"It's a miracle drug from Sunhaven Isles, super pricey. It gives a temporary boost of strength and vitality, but long-term use messes with your head and can make you dependent. Stop taking it, and you could drop dead. Last time, Mr. Felix Howard had a bad reaction between Vitality Pills and his regular meds."
Marcus frowned, "Then why hasn't he passed out this time? He got poisoned last time; it should be the same now!"
Catherine paused. "Because Mr. Felix Howard is picky about his meds. He avoids the ones that look gross, which happened to include the ones that would react with Vitality Pills."
Felix looked smug. "See? My way makes the most sense. If it weren't for my cleverness, I'd be dead by now!"
The room went awkwardly silent.
'Being picky about meds and he's proud of it!'
The caregivers were sweating, looking at the pills in Felix's box, shaking with fear. "Esme said she was here to see Mr. Felix Howard, we couldn't just stop her."
Alexander's voice was ice-cold. "I told you before, if Esme comes, you chase her away. Did you think I was joking?"
"No, no! But she said she was your fiancée."
"My fiancée is Catherine. If you can't even recognize people, you don't need to stay in the Howard family! Annie, replace everyone in Felix's room!"
The caregivers knew they had messed up and Alexander wouldn't let them off easy, but they didn't want to lose the high pay from the Howard family, so they looked pleadingly at Catherine.
Catherine said calmly, "You took money from Esme, didn't you?"
"No! We didn't! Since we took Mr. Howard's money, how could we take Esme's?"
Catherine pointed at the video. "At one minute and thirty seconds, Esme handed you a card."
Annie quickly rewound the video, and sure enough, Esme was handing a bank card to the caregivers!
The caregivers fell silent, dragged away by the bodyguards!
Felix said indifferently, "How many times have we changed caregivers? It's impossible to guard against everything. Just let me discharge from the hospital!"
Alexander was silent. 'There had been security loopholes because the old man wanted to use himself as bait to see what other bad guys were hiding in the hospital. Unexpectedly, even after swapping out the staff, Felix's meds are still messed up!'
Marcus apologized, "Felix, this is on us. We'll get to the bottom of it, I promise!"
"Fine, just get Catherine to marry over quickly. Wait, Esme messed with my meds, why didn't she mess with yours?" Felix asked.
Marcus grinned mysteriously. "I only take what Catherine prescribes. Even if Gavin prescribes it, I won't touch it."
Felix was speechless. 'Alright, you're the smart one!'
Marcus pulled out his own pillbox, looking all proud. "These are from Catherine. She brings them to me every day, no more, no less. These from the hospital? Haven't touched them."
Catherine squatted down and picked up the pillbox. "There are also Vitality Pills, but Marcus hasn't taken a single one."
Felix grumbled, "I want Catherine to prescribe my meds too! Catherine, you can't play favorites. I'm still waiting to see you two get hitched!"
Alexander's eyes showed hope and pleading. "Catherine, I don't trust any meds not prescribed by you. Felix's meds have had issues several times, I really feel bad about it."
Catherine nodded. "Alright, I'll send it along with Felix's meds from now on. But my meds aren't as sweet as Vitality Pills. They taste bitter."
Felix's face turned sour. 'How does Catherine know I always took Vitality Pills because they are sweet!'
Marcus was the first to speak. "It's just a few pills. I'll take whatever Catherine prescribes. Some old men claim to love Catherine but won't even take a few pills, what kind of love is that?"
"Fine, I get it! I'll take them, okay!" Felix said.
Catherine looked at the Vitality Pills in her hand. "I want to take these to analyze the ingredients."
Marcus and Felix quickly waved their hands, as if it were something undesirable.
"Take them. I wouldn't dare keep them if you didn't take them!" Felix said.
Marcus pondered. "Esme doesn't have enough money to buy Vitality Pills. This stuff isn't cheap."
"Lila has quite a bit, and it looks like she's been taking them for a while," Catherine said.
Marcus nodded, a sly look in his eyes. "Gavin told me, but I didn't expect to find this stuff with Felix and me. Catherine, I can't handle this myself. You and Alexander should investigate together. Our family owes Felix an explanation!"
Catherine was silent. 'I could investigate on my own. No need to involve Alexander.'
Felix looked at Catherine with hopeful eyes. "Catherine, I'm counting on you for this. You saved me once and you wouldn't want to see me fall again, right? That would waste all your efforts!"
Marcus knew that Catherine had performed the surgery alone last time, feeling both proud and heartbroken! 'I haven't even had Catherine perform surgery on me yet, Felix is really lucky!'
Alexander also looked at Catherine, his eyes filled with hopeful light.
"Alright, I understand."
Marcus dialed Esme's number in front of everyone.
Esme's sickly sweet voice came through the receiver, making everyone cringe. "Marcus, why are you calling me? Do you miss me? I'll come to the hospital to see you right away!"
"Don't bother. I just want to ask, what meds did you give Felix? He's now in the ICU, and the Howard family is demanding answers from me. You better think carefully about how to explain this to the Howard family! If you can't give a satisfactory explanation, I won't let you off!" Marcus said.
Catherine was stunned. 'Marcus is quite skilled at lying!'
