Chapter 138 Don't Block the Way
With the night as dark as it was, Catherine eyed the person in front of her cautiously, while he was checking her out too.
Catherine had a slim waist and long legs, rocking a black trench coat made of some special material. Her high-heeled leather boots and the motorcycle in front of her gave off a seriously cool vibe.
Even though Catherine had a helmet on, hiding her face, the guy could tell she was probably a stunner.
He slipped his hand into his pocket, keeping a safe distance. "Hey, Blackfire. I'm Michael Hughes from the Hughes family."
"How do you know who I am?" Catherine asked.
Michael, dressed in a dark brown trench coat and a turtleneck sweater, had a bit of a rogue charm. His smile always left Catherine guessing. "The Hughes family has its ways."
"What does the Hughes family want with me?" she asked.
The Hughes family in Imperia City was a big deal, just behind the Howard and Windsor families. They'd been killing it in various fields lately. Before Charles took over the Windsor family, they were even more powerful. But the Windsor sons were too good, and Juniper's lab kept cranking out patents, leaving the Hughes family in the dust, let alone the Howard family. With Alexander running the show, the Hughes family didn't stand a chance.
Michael looked at the icy Catherine and smiled gently. "I want to team up with the Faceless Ones. Can you give me a shot, Blackfire?"
"No," Catherine shot back.
"I'll pay big. Name your price."
Catherine frowned. "I've got plenty of money, but if you keep blocking my way, I might just take a job from your enemy and send you to meet the Grim Reaper."
Michael's smile froze. Blackfire was seriously arrogant! But he knew she wasn't kidding. As the leader of a top assassin group on the dark web, she could definitely take him out. "Blackfire, my request is simple. Think about it. I just want to know Catherine Windsor's travel plans and maybe be friends with you."
"For that, you'd be better off hiring paparazzi. I won't help you, and I won't be your friend. The Faceless Ones only make friends with the dying," Catherine said. Most people who got close to her ended up dead by her hand.
"I know the Faceless Ones are in the killing business. If you can take out the head of the Howard family, I'll pay you a billion dollars!" Michael's eyes gleamed with fanaticism. He thought no one could resist that kind of money. If they did, it just wasn't enough!
Catherine glanced at him coldly, her eyes empty of emotion.
She parted her red lips and said, "Get out of my way! I won't say it again."
'I'm in a hurry. I need to get to the lab, and this idiot is still blocking my way,' Catherine thought.
"Don't block my way." Catherine started her motorcycle and brushed past Michael.
Michael's face turned dark. His expensive trench coat was slashed open, almost cutting into his flesh, showing that Blackfire wasn't holding back. Watching her disappear into the night, Michael smirked. "Find out who this woman really is. I've taken a liking to her!"
"Yeah, since she turned down the job, let's head back. Tomorrow's Ms. Catherine Windsor's gallery opening, and we gotta show our support."
Michael nodded, casually shrugged off his trench coat, tossed it into a roadside trash can, and hopped into a luxury car to leave.
Early the next morning, the Windsor household was buzzing with activity.
Aurora was up early, fussing over her outfit, switching necklaces like crazy. "Does the pearl one look better, or the diamond one? Or maybe the ruby?"
"You look great in anything!" Brandon muttered, looking exhausted with dark circles under his eyes.
Aurora gave him a once-over and started applying makeup to his face. "Why'd you have to have insomnia last night? What if you embarrass Catherine today?"
"Yeah, yeah, just cover it up. I can't embarrass Catherine!" Brandon agreed.
Once she was all dolled up, Aurora admired her elegant reflection in the mirror, feeling pretty pleased with herself. This was her first time at Catherine's gallery opening, and she had to look her best and not embarrass Catherine!
Knocking on Catherine's door, Aurora called out gently, "Catherine, you up?"
"Yeah."
"We're waiting for you downstairs for breakfast! Don't forget to wear the dress I picked out for you!" Aurora said.
Catherine replied and quickly started getting ready. She'd been at the lab last night and then came home, handling a bunch of stuff without getting any sleep. Luckily, she never got dark circles. A little makeup was all she needed to look stunning, without the Windsor family noticing anything off.
As she suspected, Oliver wasn't Elodie's son! The DNA results showed Oliver was just a kid Elodie had adopted. For some reason, knowing this made Catherine feel relieved! Oliver wasn't Elodie's relative; Catherine was!
After slipping into the dress Aurora had picked out, Catherine headed downstairs. She wore a light blue strapless gown, not too flashy but stunning enough. The hem was adorned with diamonds, making it look like she was wearing stars, beautiful and dignified.
The Windsor family was thrilled, their eyes filled with admiration. "Our Catherine is so beautiful, truly the daughter of the Windsor family!"
At the front door, Alexander was pushing Felix, watching Catherine come down the stairs with an uncontrollable tenderness in his eyes.
The whole family had breakfast together, all dressed up, ready to attend Catherine's gallery exhibition.
The scene was so grand that anyone who didn't know might think it was Catherine's own art show!
Aurora held Catherine's hand as they walked out of the Windsor Mansion. "Catherine, don't worry. With Brandon and me here, everything will go smoothly!"
"Don't be nervous, Catherine. Oh man, why are my hands shaking? Must be too cold!" Brandon said.
Charles chimed in, "Dad, it's 86 degrees Fahrenheit today. How can you be cold?"
Brandon said, "Oh, our car can't fit everyone. Catherine, you go with Alexander!"
Brandon glanced at the Windsor family's car and nudged Catherine towards Alexander, taking over Felix's wheelchair. "Felix can sit with Marcus. It's more convenient for us."
"Alright, I'll sit in your car then," Felix said.
Catherine was speechless, watching Brandon and the family leave in a hurry, like they were afraid she'd suddenly ask to go with them!
Alexander's eyes twinkled with amusement. He opened the car door and bowed like a gentleman. "May I invite my fiancée to ride with me?"
