Chapter 123 When to Use Tough Measures?
The ward door creaked open, and there was Lila, curled up on the bed, shaking like a leaf and clutching her head. Next to her, a nurse lay knocked out, bruised and battered.
Alexander slipped in, shutting the door behind him. "Your hand hurt? You've been through a lot. Don't sweat the cameras; I'll take care of it."
He was giving Catherine some room to breathe and making sure nothing in the room could mess with her.
Catherine glanced up, her voice cool. "How thoughtful."
"Hey, it's a killer's instinct, plus what a fiancé should do," Alexander replied. He didn't think Catherine went overboard by hitting someone; in fact, he thought it was awesome she let loose for once. "Think of it as stress relief."
Catherine just stared at him, speechless. 'Seriously? He thinks I hit someone just to blow off steam?'
She handed the divorce papers to Andrew, her tone light. "Someone's gonna come looking for Lila in the next few days. If it's cool, keep them here and hand them over to me."
Andrew eyed the divorce papers, finally feeling like he could report back. Catherine's request was a no-brainer! "No problem! Don't worry, whoever comes for Lila, I'll hold them and send them your way!"
"Thanks."
Andrew grinned, his eyes practically sparkling as he looked at Catherine. 'Now this is how someone from the Windsor family should act—so classy, so smart, and she got the divorce papers just like that! This isn't just a divorce paper; it's my ticket to a promotion!'
Andrew left the hospital, practically buzzing with excitement.
Alexander took Catherine's hand, gently massaging her wrist and even blowing on it like she was a kid.
Catherine felt a bit awkward and tried to pull her hand back, but Alexander held on, making sure she felt his warm yet intense presence.
Just then, Marcus called, and Catherine answered casually.
"Catherine, everything sorted? Did Lila give you any trouble?" Marcus asked.
"Yeah. No biggie, I hit her," she replied.
"You hit her? What did you say? You hit Lila?" Marcus perked up, losing interest in his chess game.
"Yep, I hit her."
Marcus was so shocked, his jaw practically hit the floor. After a moment, he finally blurted out, "You silly girl, how could you handle it like that? You're the junior; how could you hit someone? Didn't I tell you to take Alexander with you? Couldn't he handle it? What if you got tired? Is my precious granddaughter's hand meant for hitting Lila?"
Catherine glanced at Alexander beside her, a smile playing on her lips as she listened to Marcus. "Catherine, you're too rigid! I told you to take Alexander so he could help, not just watch! Are you tired?"
Catherine pursed her lips, feeling a warmth inside. "You're not mad at me?"
Marcus chuckled, sharing a knowing look with Samuel beside him. "Silly girl, I know what you and Lila are like. If you hit her, she had it coming! I wouldn't blame you for someone like her. If you ever get tired of Alexander, I'll even help you out!"
Catherine couldn't help but laugh. She knew Marcus was joking to make her feel better, even dragging Alexander into it.
"Remember to come home for dinner. Don't worry about other stuff; I'm not that old yet, I can handle it," Marcus said.
"Okay, got it." Catherine put her phone away, a smile creeping onto her face.
Alexander reached out and ruffled her hair, looking a bit put out. "Is Marcus gonna hit me? Guess I need to buy some gifts to bribe him tonight!"
He'd heard the whole call, making Catherine a bit embarrassed. She turned her face away, her eyes slightly red.
Alexander leaned in closer, his breath warm against her face. "Wanna come with me to buy gifts?"
"No, I have other things to do," she refused.
Alexander didn't push it. Catherine had a lot on her plate, and he was swamped with work too. Plus, Annie was still with George, so his workload was even heavier. "Alright, heading to Moon Laboratory? I'll drop you off, and we can have dinner together tonight."
"No need, I'll head back myself tonight."
Alexander smiled helplessly, a doting curve on his lips. "You know you always lose track of time with your experiments. By the time you're done, the elders might not see you tonight. I'll pick you up."
Catherine always got so wrapped up in her experiments, she wouldn't stop until she got results, then she'd start a new set of control experiments, keeping herself super busy. Tonight was Marcus's first night back home. There was a Windsor family dinner she couldn't miss.
He'd waited for her at the door several times before, yet he never complained.
Catherine's face turned slightly red. "Alright, I'll wait for you after I finish."
After dropping her off at Moon Laboratory, Alexander held the steering wheel with one hand and lifted Catherine's hand with the other, placing a kiss on the back of her hand. "See you later."
His actions were gentlemanly and smooth. His kiss left a burning sensation on the back of her hand, like a spark had been left there.
As Alexander's car drove away, a few people from the lab behind Catherine started whistling.
"Mr. Howard looks so classy!"
"A hand kiss, so gentlemanly and elegant, I love it!"
"Shut up, you're a guy, don't be gross! Miss, we all think Alexander is great. When are you going to..." Mercury made a slicing motion across his neck.
Catherine glanced at them lightly. "You want his life? Do it yourself. The organization won't be involved."
"No! I mean using tough methods on him! With his physique, you wouldn't lose out, and he definitely wouldn't either."
If they kept talking like this, Catherine wouldn't be able to look at Alexander normally next time! "Shut up and get to work! Did the equipment we received last time include DNA testing?"
Mars thought for a moment. "Miss! Are you saying this family isn't your biological one? It can't be that! They've been so good to you! Fooling such a gullible family isn't easy."
Catherine couldn't hold back and kicked him! "Get lost."
A group of people ran into the lab, holding their butts.
Catherine took out hair samples from sealed bags, each labeled with different names.
"Miss, aren't these from Lila, Marcus, and Brandon? Whose is this?"
"Esme, Lila's adopted granddaughter," Catherine replied.
