Chapter 34 Only the Person I Like Can Call Me That!
"Lucas, what am I supposed to do?" Clara asked, her voice shaky.
"You gotta snag a document from Mr. Smith's study and bring it to me. Clara, the Smiths and the Johnsons are gonna be ours someday. You don't wanna see me suffering, do ya?"
Clara hesitated for a moment.
'I don't have access to Oliver's study.'
"Clara, don't you wanna marry me? Once this is sorted, I'll get you a diamond ring the size of a pigeon egg. Just like last time, grab Mr. Smith's document. You got this."
'A diamond ring the size of a pigeon egg!'
Clara's eyes lit up.
"Okay! I'll get it for you! Lucas, wait for me."
Lucas grabbed Clara's hand, a big grin spreading across his face.
"I'll be waiting!"
As soon as ICU visiting hours ended, Clara reluctantly left.
'Oliver already said he wanted me and Lucas to get hitched soon, so he'd definitely back my decision. Once the Johnson family's crisis is over, I'll tell Oliver about it.'
The Smith Mansion.
Clara sneaked into Oliver's study and found the document Lucas mentioned among a pile of papers, carefully taking it out.
Her heart was pounding!
Just thinking about becoming Lucas's bride made her feel all giddy with happiness!
'Too bad Catherine can't see my joy, she'd be green with envy!'
Celeste was lounging on the couch, enjoying a massage from the housekeeper.
Just thinking about how she had to stay in the detention center because of Catherine made her feel all kinds of uncomfortable!
"Where did Clara go?" Celeste asked.
"She went to the hospital to see Lucas."
"That's good. Clara's got her head on straight. She needs to lock down that marriage with the Johnson family. Once she's married, she'll be living the good life! As for Catherine..."
The more Celeste thought about it, the more something felt off!
She sat up, found Oliver watering the plants in the garden, and pulled him to sit on the bench.
"Oliver, do you think Elodie secretly left money for Catherine when she died? Otherwise, why did Catherine leave so decisively?"
Oliver found it entirely possible and said, "Elodie always loved Catherine. No way she'd pass away without leaving anything behind. If Catherine managed to hook up with Philip, she must've used the money Elodie left her!"
Celeste frowned and said, "That's not cool. Elodie's money belongs to Clara, the daughter of the Smith family. Why should Catherine get it?"
Oliver nodded, "I'll call Catherine's family myself and make her return the money Elodie left. That all belongs to Clara!"
'You think you can take even a penny from the Smith family? No way!'
Oliver made up his mind and went upstairs to his study.
Five minutes later, he came running out of the study, drenched in cold sweat!
"My document is missing! That's the bid proposal our company needs. It's super important!" he said anxiously.
Celeste, also anxious, asked, "Has anyone been in your study? Clara and I just got home and haven't been in there. When was the bid proposal prepared?"
"It was prepared the day Catherine left. I haven't checked it since!"
Oliver slapped his forehead, gritting his teeth, and said, "Alright, it must've been Catherine who took it. She's really heartless, taking my bid proposal. Is she trying to get back at the Smith family?"
"What do we do now? Should we call the cops?" Celeste said.
The bid proposal contained a lot of confidential info. If Oliver called the cops, Catherine would be in trouble, but he'd be embarrassed. If things escalated, he wouldn't have a face to show in Serenitia City anymore.
"No, let's contact Catherine first and make her return the document. If we push her too hard, she might take the bid proposal to our competitors."
"That damn girl! If I had known back then..."
Celeste, realizing she was about to spill something she shouldn't, clammed up real quick!
Luckily, Oliver was too wrapped up in the missing bid proposal to notice Celeste's weird vibe.
Bright Heal Hospital, Imperia City.
Catherine had just stepped out of Marcus's room when she spotted a familiar car parked at the hospital entrance.
The setting sun cast a warm glow on the black car and Alexander leaning against it, adding a touch of romance to the scene. His handsome face held a faint smile, making Catherine's heart skip a beat.
"Hop in," he said.
Catherine got into the car, frowning slightly, "Can't you get other rides? Why do you always come to pick me up?"
Alexander chuckled softly, his voice smooth as silk, "My car isn't up to snuff, so the platform won't approve it. Only you don't mind."
'This car is kinda old. Most Uber drivers in Imperia City drive better cars, and given Alexander's special status, it's tough to get approval,' she thought.
Alexander leaned in to help Catherine with her seatbelt, the faint scent of sandalwood surrounding her, making even the dust in the air seem enchanted by his presence.
"I can do it myself."
"Sure, but this car's seatbelt is a bit tricky. I'm really sorry. I'll work hard to get a better car."
'What does his getting a new car have to do with me?' she thought.
She suppressed the heat rising to her face and said coolly, "Ethan ran away. To be precise, Ethan never went to X Bar. The person who met Eli was his brother."
"My people found out too. Coincidentally, the Shadow Syndicate has some info on Ethan. Wanna check it out together?"
Catherine glanced at him indifferently and said, "This is info from the Shadow Syndicate. Why share it with me?"
The Shadow Syndicate and the Faceless Ones were rival assassin organizations!
Alexander said with a gentle smile, "Why not? I do things based on my feelings, not rules."
'Feelings?'
Catherine turned around, feeling a bit uneasy!
"Alright, I'll share the info the Faceless Ones have on Ethan too," she said.
"In that case, let's find a place to have a meal and talk it over."
Alexander drove downtown and found a particularly romantic-looking revolving restaurant adorned with colorful lights.
"Is it necessary to choose such an expensive place for a meal?" she said.
Alexander walked to her side, opened the car door, and placed his hand on the doorframe to prevent her from hitting her head.
He bent slightly and said, his deep eyes showing a hint of dark waves, "For the first meal I treat you, I want it to be special. Don't worry, it's just a meal. I still have money to buy a car."
'What does his money have to do with me? I just think that Alexander, who already has a tough life supporting an entire organization, would find it even harder if I spent money so lavishly. What car he bought isn't my decision!'
Inside the restaurant, Alexander led Catherine to a window seat with a great view, overlooking much of Imperia City's nightscape.
"What do you like to eat?" he asked.
"Anything is fine."
Alexander nodded and called the waiter to order.
His phone rang, and Esme's coquettish voice came through the receiver, "Alexander, when are you coming to pick me up? I want to have dinner with you."
"Who gave you my number?" Alexander asked.
"If I really want to find it, I will. I genuinely like you!"
"Get lost!"
He hung up, immediately blocking the number, then sent a message to Annie to investigate who had given Esme his number.
When he looked up, he saw Catherine sitting across from him, watching him with a teasing expression!
"I have nothing to do with her. I really dislike her," Alexander explained.
Catherine nodded, "So, even people you dislike can call you that?"
"Only the person I like can call me that," he said.
