Chapter 35 Breaking Off the Engagement with the Windsor Family!

Alexander, with one hand, unbuttoned his suit jacket and sat down all smooth-like.

"Let me reintroduce myself. Name's Alexander Howard. I'm single, got sick grandparents, a deadbeat dad, and two dimwit brothers. As you can see, I'm busting my butt to support my family."

Catherine gave him a quick, uninterested glance.

'Why should I care about his family or his relationship status?'

"The woman who called me earlier? She's got nothing to do with me. Never been in a relationship," he clarified.

"Okay," she replied, ice-cold.

A laid-back smile spread across Alexander's handsome face, the light bouncing off his gold-rimmed glasses making him look even more dazzling.

"I need a favor," he said.

"Shoot."

"I need to meet the doctor 'Moon' from the Faceless Ones. My grandparents are in bad shape, especially my grandpa. His heart's been acting up for the past couple of years. Honestly, I'm numb from signing critical illness notices."

On the dark web, Phantom Doctor 'Moon' was a big deal. Other than knowing she was with the Faceless Ones, no one knew much about her.

Word on the street was that during a mission, Moon single-handedly saved all the severely injured members, pulling them back from death's door!

Catherine pursed her lips. "Sure, when?"

"As soon as possible."

"How about the 20th?"

On the 18th, the Windsor family was throwing her a birthday bash, so she couldn't make it to check Alexander's grandpa.

"Perfect, I'll set it up. I'll pick you up then! As for Moon, I'll need you to contact her, and I'll handle the consultation fee."

"Okay," Catherine replied, thinking about Alexander's financial situation, and added, "The fee doesn't need to be too high."

The cost for a visit from Phantom Doctor 'Moon' might be out of Alexander's league.

Alexander chuckled softly.

'First time someone worried about me being broke!'

The girl in front of him was pure and innocent, and he didn't want to spoil that.

Alexander admitted he liked this concern!

"Don't worry, I got this."

"Okay."

After dinner, they strolled out of the restaurant, the streetlights casting a warm glow.

Under the yellow streetlight, an old BMW was parked. Oliver jumped out, rushed to Catherine, and said,

"Catherine, did you take Elodie's shares that belong to Clara? Hand them over now, and I'll let this slide!"

He tried to grab Catherine's hand but was stopped by a vice-like grip on his wrist!

In front of Oliver stood a cold-faced, handsome young man, nearly 6'3". Despite his refined looks, his grip left Oliver helpless!

The fear from Philip still haunted Oliver!

"Let go of me! I'm teaching Catherine a lesson. What's it to you?" Oliver spat.

Alexander frowned slightly, looked at Catherine, and asked, "Can I hit him?"

"Sure, but there are cameras here," she replied.

"Then let's take it to the alley."

Oliver's eyes widened in disbelief!

'What are they talking about?'

"You wanna hit me? I'm telling you, Elodie's stuff belongs to the Smith family. You gotta give it back!"

Catherine said calmly, "You didn't show up at Elodie's funeral. When she was dying, she waited for you in the hospital for three days to see you one last time, but you never came."

"I was too busy working. If I didn't work hard, could Elodie have afforded such a nice hospital room?"

"In all the years Elodie was sick, you visited her three times, each for less than ten minutes. I was the one who took care of her," she added.

When Elodie was gravely ill, she couldn't recognize anyone, only calling out Catherine's name over and over.

Before she died, she wanted to see Oliver one last time, to remind him to take good care of Catherine.

Unfortunately, Oliver thought Elodie had too many "critical moments" and didn't want to miss dinner with a new model he just met.

At Elodie's funeral, Celeste found it bad luck, and Oliver, thinking it was bad for his business image, skipped seeing Elodie one last time.

"I've been busting my butt. You got no ties to the Smith family anymore. Clara's my real daughter, and everything Smith-related has to come back!" Oliver demanded.

Catherine stayed calm. "I didn't take anything."

The day she left, she only took the computer Elodie had bought for her!

"You didn't take anything? Then where are Elodie's shares?" Oliver pressed.

Catherine smirked and looked at Oliver like he was nuts. "Don't you know if Elodie had shares?"

'Elodie's shares?'

With Catherine's reminder, he remembered that he had never given Elodie any shares.

'What would she need shares for?'

"Forget the shares. Where's the proposal you stole? Hand it over now!" Oliver demanded.

'Proposal?'

The proposals Oliver came up with were so bad that Catherine felt they insulted her eyes.

For someone who's been in business for decades to produce such garbage proposals, Oliver was truly a "talent".

"I'm not interested in your junk. As for your proposal, check the surveillance footage, and you'll know." Catherine reminded him.

'My study always had surveillance cameras!'

'It was initially to guard against Catherine and Elodie. After Catherine left the Smith family, I almost forgot I had installed cameras.'

Catherine walked away without giving Oliver another glance.

This family was nuts, and she didn't want to waste any more time on them.

Alexander released Oliver's nearly dislocated hand and followed her.

He felt a twinge of heartache!

'So these are her former family members?'

'This is the life she used to live!'

Catherine walked in the night, her slender body exuding resilience, her hair tucked behind her ears. Standing under the streetlight, she gave a glance that stirred waves in his heart!

Yet Alexander sensed a faint sadness from Catherine at that moment!

Alexander stepped forward, took Catherine's hand, and wrapped her small hand in his palm.

Catherine was puzzled.

"I drank too much, help me a bit," he said.

"What?"

"They're not your people. You don't need to be sad for them."

Catherine shook her head and said, "I'm not sad, but you can let go of my hand."

'I have long seen through what kind of person Oliver is.'

But thinking of Elodie, who still looked longingly at the door before she died, her eyes full of tears, her grip on Catherine's hand gradually losing strength, Catherine still found it hard to let go!

Alexander, being considerate, released her hand.

Watching Catherine leave, Alexander stood there, feeling a bit reluctant.

Annie parked the car behind Alexander and said with a sigh, "You really don't know how to pursue girls. She told you to let go, and you just let go?"

Alexander's smile faded, and he turned, his demeanor turning icy and sharp, and said, "You don't understand. Until I break off my engagement, I can't openly pursue her. It's unethical."

"So you just let her take a cab? I was waiting in the car for you to bring her along!" Annie teased.

"She doesn't know my identity. I don't want to burden her. She doesn't seem to like wealthy families."

Thinking of his previous attempts to test her, Alexander felt a slight headache.

He was afraid of scaring Catherine away, so he only dared to disguise himself in the simplest way to gain her care and trust.

Annie was silent.

'Unbelievable!'

'Alexander, who dominates the business world with billion-dollar deals, is actually a pure-hearted person!'

"What about the Windsor family engagement?"

"I will attend the birthday party hosted by the Windsor family. Prepare the gift. I will break off the engagement with the Windsor family that day!"
