Chapter 149 Heartless Person
Hearing Catherine agree, Alexander grinned, his smile lighting up the spotless glass window. His voice had this deep, magnetic pull. "I'll let it slide this time, but next time, remember your promise. Even if it's just grabbing a bite, I'll be looking forward to it."
The idea of having dinner with Catherine made him more patient with those annoying partners. Whenever he had a moment, he'd scout out the latest hot spots for dates, but she up and left Imperia City without a word.
'What a heartless move! Does she really think it's just a meal? Probably because Catherine doesn't care about me yet, so my requests are easy to forget.' This realization left Alexander feeling a bit bitter.
Catherine touched her nose, unsure if she felt ashamed or guilty. "I know, it was my fault this time. When I come back, I'll definitely spend time with you."
"Alright."
After hanging up, Catherine looked at the call log and thought, 'When did he start calling me every day? Is the president of the Howard Group really this free?'
Putting down her phone, Catherine took out the watch she had borrowed from Alexander. She had promised to modify it and return it. Now that she had the time, she might as well see what she could do with it.
Dylan watched Catherine's serious profile through the rearview mirror, thinking she was so serene and elegant, with a composed and generous demeanor, just like a true lady of high society.
Thinking about what happened at Bright Heal Hospital made Dylan angry. "Miss, if you ever meet anyone from the Smith family, don't reveal your identity. That family is just greedy. I used to think they treated you well, but I was so wrong."
"The Smith family?" Catherine was puzzled.
Dylan recounted the incident with Oliver at the hospital. "If you see them, don't engage with them!"
Catherine nodded and put the last part back into the watch. The modified men's watch was luxurious yet understated, with each diamond full and dazzling, really matching Alexander's style.
Dylan continued to warn Catherine, "It seems like they haven't seen your birthday livestream, so they probably don't know your identity yet."
'If Oliver knows Catherine is the daughter of the Windsor family, he will go crazy! Families like the Windsor family, with their immense wealth, keep their fortunes a secret. They aren't on any rich lists because they don't want to be! Someone as greedy and petty as Oliver will definitely try to extort Catherine. He must not find out.'
Catherine smiled gently and nodded. "It doesn't matter. Whether they know or not, I won't pay them any mind. I have nothing to do with them now."
'Ever since I found out that Elodie also has no ties to the Smith family, I feel relieved. I used to tolerate the Smith family only for Elodie's sake, not wanting to upset her. But Elodie knew everything.' Catherine thought as she looked at the bracelet on her slender wrist, a similar bracelet auctioned for seven million dollars. 'Since Elodie supports me, what does the Smith family matter to me?'
Seeing that Catherine understood, Dylan felt relieved, just worried that Catherine's kindness would be exploited, and the Smith family would hurt her!
As the car stopped at the entrance of Tranquil County, Juniper, who had received the news, rushed down from her lab and hugged Catherine tightly as she got out of the car. "Catherine! You finally came to see me!"
Juniper looked beat, with dark circles under her eyes showing she hadn't slept much. But seeing Catherine made her smile instantly.
"Juniper, I brought you a ton of stuff, all from Mom." Catherine pointed to the big bags behind her. Aurora had packed the car full for Juniper.
"Awesome, Mom sent me coleslaw!" Juniper hooked her arm around Catherine's neck while telling her assistant to unload the items. "Come on, let me show you around. The farms here are all part of our lab."
Juniper led Catherine towards the farms, looking proud. "I'll let you in on a secret, those over there are edible!"
Catherine felt a bit helpless, thinking even if they were edible, seeing them every day, Juniper must be tired of them.
"How's everything at home lately?" Juniper asked.
Catherine gave Juniper a selective rundown of recent events, leaving Juniper stunned.
"Catherine, slow down. Let me process this. There's so much info. I don't know whether to be more shocked about Grandpa and Lila's divorce, Lila not being Dad's mother, or Lila ending up in the ICU because of Esme."
With all these events happening at once, Juniper was flabbergasted, thinking, 'What a mess! How long have I been away, and so much has happened at home? It's simply incredible.'
"Juniper, why did the family adopt Esme?" Catherine asked.
"Back then, Lila was sick and dreamt that God sent her a child. Later, she saw Esme abandoned on the street and insisted that she was the child sent by God, so she had to adopt Esme." Juniper shrugged, looking helpless. "She wanted to adopt, so she did. Our family could afford her eating. Plus, after adopting Esme, Lila really did stop bothering Mom, so it was a good thing."
Catherine frowned slightly. "Picked up from the street?"
"That's what Lila said, but I think..." Juniper lowered her voice, hooked her arm around Catherine's neck, and whispered, "Esme might be Lila's illegitimate daughter! She's way too good to Esme, better than to any of us."
Catherine looked at Juniper, speechless, and said calmly, "Esme is Lila's biological granddaughter."
Catherine handed Juniper the prepared paternity test report. Seeing the clear data, Juniper was shocked. "This is just too outrageous!"
Catherine looked at Juniper, who was wearing a lab coat that had been washed to the point of fading, her hair simply tied back with a hair tie Catherine had given her last time. Her hands, which had a thin layer of calluses and some frostbite marks, pulled Catherine along.
Despite being a daughter of the Windsor family, Juniper lived a tough life for the sake of research.
Catherine took out a small box from her bag and handed it to Juniper.
"What's this? A gift for me?" Juniper asked.
"Yes, it's from me. It will help remove the calluses on your hands and prevent frostbite."
Juniper's eyes lit up! Although she didn't mind these things, she was still a girl who loved beauty. Sometimes the research environment wasn't ideal, and she had to do things herself, working in cold labs. Last time she went back to the Windsor family, she carefully hid her injuries from her family. But Catherine had noticed and quietly prepared a gift for her.
'Catherine is so wonderful, so considerate, kind, and adorable!' Juniper thought as she hugged Catherine and kissed her several times, feeling warm inside. "Thank you, Catherine! I love you!"
