Chapter 115 Sleep in the Same Room!
Neil didn't whip up a feast, but the meals in the mountain village always had that homey, rustic vibe.
Catherine watched Alexander sample each dish, knowing he was savoring them like he was trying to connect with her past.
The courtyard opened up to a sky full of stars, casting a magical spell.
"Did you used to be a picky eater?" Alexander asked.
"How'd you guess?" Catherine replied.
Anyone who knew her well would naturally cater to her tastes.
'Elodie never gave me grief about being picky, except for saying it might stunt my growth. But she always cooked what I liked. Now, even the Windsors remember my preferences!' Catherine thought, looking at the food in her bowl. Alexander had deboned the chicken drumsticks and wings, and the tender meat melted in her mouth. The chicken soup, simmered to a golden hue with local herbs, was exceptionally delicious. 'Maybe Alexander's the one who remembers my tastes!'
After dinner, Neil came in to clear the dishes.
He carried a kerosene lamp and fiddled with the electrical circuits of Cloudscape Villa for a while. Suddenly, he slapped his forehead and said, "Looks like the electrical circuit's got some issues. How about I get someone to fix it tomorrow?"
'I’ve got it all planned out. Once the power goes out, Catherine and Alexander will have to stumble around in the dark, hand in hand. In this big old house, they’re bound to bump into each other...' Just thinking about it made Neil excited! 'Elodie used to say Catherine's too stubborn when it comes to dating. We even brainstormed strategies, and this is one of them! Elodie, you must be smiling up there!'
Catherine frowned, got up, and walked over to the circuit box. She raised her phone's flashlight and squinted at the circuits.
"Miss, this old house has been around for ages. It's normal for the circuits to wear out. Don't worry, I'll get the village electrician to check it out tomorrow," Neil said.
Catherine replied calmly, "I remember we have some tools for fixing circuits at home. I'll go get them."
Neil didn't think much of it. He figured Catherine, with her design background, probably didn't know a thing about circuits.
Catherine found a ladder in the basement, climbed up, and put on insulated gloves, carefully examining the circuit.
Alexander reached out to support her waist, and suddenly Catherine felt a jolt, almost thinking it was a short circuit, as if invisible sparks exploded in the night, creating ripples.
"Be careful. If you can't see clearly, let me handle it," Alexander said.
Catherine's face turned inexplicably red as she asked, "You know how?"
"My grad studies required some outdoor practice. Honestly, I designed the circuits for the Howard family myself. When are you coming to see them?" he said proudly.
Starry Residence was bought by Alexander and the Windsor family. Sunlit Mansion was always brightly lit, with lights in the entire courtyard resembling fireworks.
"Charles said the lights at Sunlit Mansion are too extravagant, like a peacock showing off," she mocked.
Alexander's smile faltered for a second. 'I designed the lighting for the whole building, but it's rarely all lit up. Felix insists on keeping it on every day, hoping Catherine will feel the warmth of the Howard family when she looks over. What if one day she finds the lights beautiful and decides to marry into our family? So, all the lights in the courtyard must be on!'
Catherine examined the circuit board's corners and chips, frowning slightly. "Has someone tampered with the circuit?"
The corners were clearly deformed, like someone had deliberately damaged them with pliers.
Neil was shocked, thinking, 'How can Catherine even tell that? I just sabotaged it! Isn't she supposed to study design? How can she tell there's a problem with the circuit?'
Cold sweat dripped down Neil's face as he said, "No. The circuit just aged and shorted out suddenly. It's not a big deal!"
"The diode and capacitor also have issues. Hand me the tools," Catherine said. She took the tools Alexander handed her, aimed the flashlight at the circuit, and quickly fixed it.
As she flipped the switch, the old house was bathed in a warm yellow light, and the portrait of Elodie in the hall looked especially kind and gentle.
Neil truly hadn't expected Catherine to have such skills!
After fixing the circuit, Catherine checked it and said, "Have the electrician replace some parts tomorrow; many areas are quite old."
"Okay, Miss, you two rest first. I'll prepare the beds," Neil said, feeling extremely regretful. 'If Catherine hadn't fixed the circuit, the romantic atmosphere in the dark would have been perfect!'
Catherine's room wasn't big, with only a desk and a single bed. The wardrobe was small, but there was a full-length mirror in front of it.
Catherine touched the mirror and said, "My grandma said little girls love to look pretty, so she bought this mirror for me."
Alexander looked around the room. He was tall, and the room felt cramped with him in it. The night breeze blew in, filling the room with a pleasant fragrance.
"Your grandma was very good to you. She must be very happy for you in heaven now," he said.
Catherine nodded sadly, thinking that unfortunately, Elodie was no longer here.
Neil poked his head out from the next room, "Miss, you'll have to share a room with Alexander. The floor in Elodie's room has been chewed up by mice."
Catherine's room wasn't big. To make space for Alexander to sleep on the floor, he would have to sleep in the narrow hallway.
That hallway looked cramped even to her, let alone Alexander's tall frame, which would leave no room to turn over.
She looked at Alexander and asked, "How about you sleep in the car?"
Alexander looked at her with a bit of grievance, his voice tinged with a nasal tone. "Catherine, I drove a convertible. Even with the top up, there's no room to sleep."
Catherine was silent. She had forgotten that Alexander drove a sports car!
The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains was significant, and it was especially cold at night. If Alexander slept in the car, he would definitely catch a cold, not to mention that his model-like height wouldn't fit in a two-seater sports car.
Neil quickly spoke up, "Miss, I'll set up a bed for Alexander in your room, right next to the bed. It's spacious!"
'Just spacious enough for Alexander to turn over and have his face right up against the wall!' Neil thought.
