Chapter 90 The Meaning of the Engagement Is You
"Lila's health is in the dumps. Every time Catherine swings by, she drops some seriously nasty comments. I can't figure out why she's gotta be like that to Lila," Esme said, tears streaming down her face, looking all kinds of pitiful. "Alexander! Lila's just looking out for the Windsor fam. Whatever she says has gotta be legit. Even if you don't wanna buy it, Lila wouldn't lie to you."
Alexander shot a cold glance at Esme and Lila, who was clutching her chest and groaning like she was on her deathbed.
"I only trust what I see. I know exactly what Catherine's like. No one can badmouth her to me."
With that, he swung open the hospital room door, ready to bounce without a second thought, not giving a damn about Lila's sick act.
Lila freaked out! She couldn't believe Alexander wouldn't even give her the time of day.
She had it all planned out: if Alexander showed even a smidge of concern and said some sweet stuff while she was faking sick, she could get Esme close to him.
Even if he didn't dump Catherine right away, at least Esme could be around him all the time.
Sooner or later, any guy would fall for that!
But Alexander left without a second glance, his face cold as ice.
"I'm telling the truth! Catherine stole a ton of money from me!" Lila shouted.
Alexander frowned and had just opened the door when he saw Catherine standing there.
Today, she was rocking a light purple dress, a pearl handbag picked out by Aurora, and white leather shoes. Her long, curled lashes made her look like a delicate doll.
Since Catherine came back, Aurora had been obsessed with dressing her up, picking out outfits for her every day.
Just seeing Catherine all dolled up could make Aurora's day.
The Smith family must've lost their minds to cut ties with such a gem like Catherine!
Alexander worried Catherine might've heard Lila's trash talk, so he closed the door behind him, shutting out the drama inside.
"Didn't you say you were heading to Marcus's?" Alexander asked, feeling a bit uneasy.
If she had been standing there, she must've heard all of Lila's nasty words.
Catherine raised her chin and pointed to the caregivers nearby, saying, "They wouldn't let me leave. They said they were worried Lila might say something to me after seeing you."
In Lila's plan, she wanted Catherine and Alexander to break off the engagement right then and there.
If not, she wanted Catherine to hand over the engagement to Esme.
Alexander grabbed Catherine's hand and shot a cold glare at the caregivers.
Facing Alexander's intense stare, they all looked down.
They only dared to stop Catherine because Lila had ordered them to.
With Alexander there, his presence alone made them shake in their boots. They didn't dare stop her now!
Alexander took Catherine's hand and led her out of Lila's room, asking, "Did you hear what Lila said just now?"
Catherine nodded. She had already guessed what Lila would say.
"Ignore Lila's words. I'm not calling off the engagement. Catherine, you should know that if I hadn't found out on the day of the birthday party that my fiancée was you, this engagement would've been off ages ago." Alexander looked seriously at Catherine, laying it all out. "Catherine, the original point of this engagement was to make Marcus and Felix happy, but now it's because of you. Because it's you, this engagement stands."
Catherine locked eyes with Alexander, his gaze deep and intense, and she got what he was saying.
'If it wasn't me, Alexander would've ditched this engagement ages ago. Lila's plan to get Esme hitched to Alexander is just a pipe dream,' she thought, her cheeks turning a bit red as she felt a warm flush.
Alexander reached into his pocket and handed her a blank check.
"What's this for?" she asked, eyebrows raised.
"I can't have my fiancée running low on cash. I know the Windsor family gave you a bunch of bank cards, but my check can be cashed at any bank," he explained.
Catherine frowned slightly, her slender fingers holding the check, feeling a bit puzzled.
Alexander ruffled her hair and said with a grin, "Don't overthink it. I don't buy a word of what Lila said."
"Then why the check?" she asked, still confused.
Alexander's eyes sparkled like tiny stars as he said, "Can't a guy give his fiancée some pocket money?"
Hearing their voices, Felix had been waiting by the hospital room door, and as soon as he saw Catherine, he ran over excitedly in his hospital gown.
"Catherine! I've missed you so much! What are you and Alexander talking about? Why are you standing in the hallway and not coming in?"
Seeing Felix in such high spirits, Alexander knew his health had been good recently.
Noticing the check in Catherine's hand, Felix scoffed, "A check? Alexander, you really don't know how to make a girl happy. Who gives a check as a gift?"
Alexander pressed his forehead in exasperation and explained, "It's just a little pocket money for Catherine."
Felix wedged himself between them, bumping Alexander aside with his shoulder, and pulled Catherine towards the hospital room, whispering, "Pocket money? In the Howard family, after marriage, the men have no money. All the money will be Catherine's, and you'll be the one needing pocket money. Catherine, in the future, you can give him as much money as you want, but don't spoil him! You can fill in any amount on this check. Alexander's loaded, no need to save for him."
Catherine felt a bit helpless. Her marriage to Alexander wasn't even confirmed yet. But facing Felix, she couldn't bring herself to refuse. "Okay, I got it."
The more Felix looked at Catherine, the more he liked her, completely ignoring Alexander behind them.
Watching Felix and Catherine walk away, Alexander felt a warmth in his heart. Felix was actually a stubborn and eccentric old man, and his fondness for Catherine was completely unexpected.
Felix had another reason for waiting for Catherine. "Catherine, how do you think my health is? Can I be discharged soon?"
Marcus's voice boomed from the hospital room door. "How's your health? You'll kick the bucket tomorrow! Get out of here and stop bothering Catherine! If you want a granddaughter, have your son give you one!"
Felix immediately perked up and shouted, "Marcus! My son can't give me such a wonderful granddaughter, but my grandson and granddaughter-in-law can give me an even better great-grandson!"
Although Marcus also longed for the scene of four generations living together, the most important thing now was to argue with Felix.
"If I don't agree, you'll never get to hold a great-grandson in this lifetime," Marcus said angrily.
Felix immediately charged forward and said, "Just you wait! I'm gonna fight you today!"
