Chapter 95 Why Become an Assassin

Esme used to hang around The Howard Tower all the time, trying to get on Alexander's good side. She'd always have something nasty to say about any young, pretty female employee she saw.

She ended up getting herself blacklisted by everyone at the Howard Group.

But since Esme was from the Windsor family, the employees couldn't really do much about it.

"I've already told all the security guards at the Howard Group to keep her out. I'm sorry, Catherine. It won't happen again," Alexander said.

Catherine replied calmly, "You don't need to apologize to me; you should apologize to your employees."

Annie thought to herself, 'What a great and kind girl!'

Alexander grinned and said, "Of course, I gave them extra bonuses. I checked out the rules you set for the gallery and the music store, and the Howard Group is going to adopt some of them too."

Catherine was a bit taken aback, thinking, 'The Howard Group is such a big company with its own system, unlike my gallery and music store. Samuel gave me the music store and gallery as small projects. The main goal isn't profit. I'm surprised not that Alexander read my rules, but that he's actually going to use them.'

"The Howard Group's rules are lacking in terms of human care, and your rules are great," he said.

Catherine's rules included specific menstrual leave for female employees, and the benefits were more comprehensive.

Catherine noticed Annie's ears almost perking up and chuckled softly, thinking Alexander seemed to be a good boss.

Sitting at the dining table, Alexander reached out to Catherine and said in a smooth voice, "Could you help me with my cufflinks?"

No matter what shirt Alexander wore, he always had this pair of ruby cufflinks, which gave him an air of mysterious, understated elegance.

Catherine casually took them off and placed them on a velvet cloth nearby, asking, "Why do you always wear these?"

Given his wealth, he must have countless cufflinks.

"Because the girl I like helped me put them on once," Alexander said as he rolled up his sleeves and carefully cut the steak in front of him. The pair of ruby cufflinks beside him shimmered with a subtle glow.

Catherine's face had a faint blush under the light.

After cutting the steak, Alexander skillfully placed it in front of Catherine and took away the untouched steak in front of her. "Have a try."

The steak was covered in a sweet sauce, with the aroma of rosemary mixed with the rich scent of the meat, making it irresistible.

Catherine took small bites of the steak Alexander had cut and looked up at him calmly, asking, "Why did you become an assassin?"

"Because of some family matters. It's not convenient to tell you right now," Alexander said as he held a glass of wine, looking at Catherine, who was eating with her cheeks puffed out like a cute little hamster.

"I don't want to hide anything or make excuses, so I can only tell you part of it. It has to do with my mother's death. She was harmed by someone sent by an international assassin organization. Although the assassin failed, my mother remained bedridden for years and eventually passed away. You could say I wanted to avenge her personally," he said.

Catherine's eyes shimmered, and the candlelight on the dining table reflected in her eyes as she asked, "Is the part you can't talk about related to the Howard family?"

Alexander picked up a delicate spoon, stabbed a piece of cream cake, and stuffed it into Catherine's mouth, squinting slightly, "Smart people should know what to say."

The Howard family was extensive and powerful. Even though she was a daughter of the Windsor family, Alexander still worried she might get hurt.

"Got it."

"The Howard family's matters are complicated, but trust me, before you marry me, I'll handle it."

'Marry him? I haven't even thought about that yet!' she thought.

But looking into Alexander's eyes, Catherine suddenly said, "If I marry you tomorrow, you wouldn't be able to resolve those matters in just one day, would you?"

Alexander was taken aback, then he bent over laughing like he’d just heard the funniest joke ever. His laughter was deep and intoxicating, like the red wine at his side.

"Did you forget who I am? If you're willing to marry me tomorrow, I'll take down the Shadow Syndicate today and sort everything out," he said confidently.

Catherine found the cake in her mouth suddenly too sweet.

Alexander's gaze softened even more as he looked at Catherine, thinking she was simply too adorable, and asked, "In exchange, can you tell me why you became an assassin?"

Catherine didn't speak, just poked at the cream cake in front of her with a small spoon.

"I guess your becoming an assassin has something to do with the Galactic Aurora Collective, right?" he said.

Catherine suddenly looked up, a warning in her eyes as she stared at Alexander, but he remained elegantly composed, without any pressure or probing, only concern and anticipation.

"Yes," she said.

"Although I don't know exactly what happened with the Galactic Aurora Collective, ever since I found out that the people around you were rescued from there, I got curious and did some digging," Alexander said honestly.

The information that the Shadow Syndicate could uncover might be limited, but the Howard Group had the means to conduct a more comprehensive investigation into the Galactic Aurora Collective.

As an organization forgotten on the fringes, the Galactic Aurora Collective's members were absolute geniuses gathered from around the world. Their intelligence was developed to the extreme through various drugs and mechanical means, pushing the limits of human brain and body development.

Alexander stood up and, in a half-kneeling position, leaned in front of Catherine, holding her hand and asking, "I really want to know, what is your role in the Galactic Aurora Collective?"

Catherine's eyes flickered and she wondered how he could be so perceptive.

"Nothing," she said.

"It's okay if you don't want to tell me. I just want you to know that you can trust me." Alexander reached out and gently ruffled her soft hair, smiling lightly, "You can be a little more willful."

'Willful? I lost the right to be willful from a very young age. The indifference and favoritism of the Smith family forced me to grow up early so I could take care of myself and Elodie,' Catherine thought.

Alexander understood her nature and changed the topic, "I've arranged to meet Ethan this weekend. The location will be set by the Shadow Syndicate. I'll come to pick you up then."

Catherine frowned slightly and asked, "Is the person Ethan wants to save within the country?"

"No, his brother's illness is quite severe, to the point where only Phantom Doctor Moon can help. Ethan doesn't dare to move his brother casually, but I'm only giving him one chance. If he doesn't bring his brother, there won't be another opportunity," he said.

The meeting location was crucial. If Ethan arranged it, they would lose the upper hand.

Alexander was smart enough and bold enough in his decisions.

Seeing her hesitation, Alexander chuckled, "I've already contacted the Faceless Ones. They said they're willing to cooperate with us; it's all up to you."

Catherine thought, 'The members of Faceless Ones are probably eager to see what Alexander looks like! Plus, the Shadow Syndicate covers all the expenses for the Faceless Ones and provides the best sniper equipment. The members of the Faceless Ones have been poor for so long that they are ready to jump at the sight of money. Of course, they will agree!'

Then Catherine felt helpless and said, "Alright, I understand."
