Chapter 143 Waiting for Death

As Catherine reached the corner of the stairs, she suddenly heard some weird noises coming from the basement storage.

She frowned a bit and whispered, "Alexander, wait for a sec."

"Take all the time you need," he replied, thinking, 'If it means Catherine will like me, waiting is no biggie.'

Catherine was momentarily speechless, feeling like Alexander's words had a deeper meaning!

She locked her phone, slipped it into her suit pocket, and headed towards the basement where the supplies were kept.

The gallery staff had all left, but there were still a few people in blue worker uniforms in the storage room. Catherine glanced around, crouched down, and climbed onto the construction pipes on the ceiling, squatting above the workers to spy on them.

"Hurry up, add these to the pigments too."

"Won't they notice if we add this stuff?"

"No way!" The leader was super confident. "This stuff is colorless and odorless. Once it's in, those painters are gonna get poisoned while painting. The gallery will be in deep trouble! Ms. Windsor should've cooperated instead of going against the Hughes family. She made a big scene today, making the Hughes family's gallery look like a joke!"

The workers mixed the powder with the pigments and added the already prepared toxic pigment blocks into the original pigments.

"Is Ms. Windsor still in the office?"

"I saw the lights off upstairs, so she's probably gone."

The lead worker pulled out a pinhole reagent from his pocket, his face full of malice. "Inject this into her office water dispenser. Once she drinks the water, she's done for!"

The other workers didn't expect they'd actually harm Catherine and started to panic. "Even if you want to avenge Jennifer, you can't harm Ms. Windsor. What if the Windsor family comes after us?"

'She's the Windsor family's daughter. If something happens to her, we're toast!' the other workers thought.

The lead worker gritted his teeth. "Don't worry, the Hughes family will protect us."

'Catherine is so heartless? Jennifer just embezzled a little money, which is nothing to the Windsor family. She insisted on sending Jennifer to jail, so don't blame me for being ruthless!' the lead worker thought.

Catherine watched the workers calmly. Her eyes swept over the surveillance cameras in the storage room. As expected, they were all turned off, and the cameras that should have red lights were pitch black. These workers came prepared.

After dealing with the pigments, the workers looked at the materials piled on the other side. "What about that equipment over there?"

"Don't worry about it. The raw materials we provided earlier were problematic. In less than three days, most of their exhibition hall will collapse. It's best if it happens during the day when it's open, crushing a few customers, that would be interesting!"

'Once the equipment fails and the exhibition collapses and kills people, even if the Windsor family steps in, it'll be too late. The gallery will definitely close. Let's see how they compete with the Hughes family then!' the workers thought.

"Catherine is just a country bumpkin who came back. Does she really think she's the apple of the Windsor family's eye? When something happens, let's see how she handles it!"

"When the gallery is in trouble, they'll realize giving it to Catherine was a mistake. The Hughes family always gets what they want!"

The workers gritted their teeth, looked around the storage room, and made sure they had tampered with everything they could before leaving reluctantly.

Catherine watched them slip out the back door, her gaze turning icy. She knew these guys; they were from the construction crew Jennifer used to manage. Over the years, they'd made a killing with Jennifer, all by scamming the gallery. Now that Catherine had sent Jennifer packing, these workers lost their gravy train and turned to the Hughes family for revenge. They were out for both cash and blood.

Catherine touched her earlobe. The earring listening device Sophia had tested last time worked like a charm, and she'd added a camera function, capturing everything that just went down.

The storage room was dead silent as Catherine climbed down from the ceiling, dusted off her clothes, and left the gallery.

As soon as she stepped outside, Alexander was there with an umbrella. "It's raining. What were you up to?"

"Just handling a little issue."

It was the first time Alexander saw Catherine in her professional attire. The tailored cropped pants showed off her slender ankles, and her high heels added a touch of elegance and intellect to her usual sharp look.

After dinner, Alexander dropped Catherine off at The Windsor Mansion entrance, looking a bit reluctant. "I'm sorry I didn't get to see you paint today."

But he had saved the video and set it as his dynamic phone wallpaper, so he could see a different side of her whenever he picked up his phone. Alexander took a step forward, gently hugged Catherine, and planted a quick kiss on her forehead. "Good night."

"Good night." Catherine turned and walked into the house, only to see Marcus sitting in a wheelchair with a gossiping look on his face, his eyes fixed on her. He coughed twice when he saw her enter.

Pretending nothing had happened, he kept glancing at Catherine's face. "Catherine, did you have a good time with Alexander?"

"It was okay."

"Well, young people should be careful. I'm not old-fashioned, but you should protect yourself. I'm still looking forward to having four generations under one roof. Do you think your child will have the last name Windsor or Howard?"

Catherine looked helplessly at Marcus, who was clearly overthinking. 'What is Grandpa talking about? Alexander and I aren't even married yet, how can he be talking about kids?' she thought.

"Grandpa, what are you trying to say?" she asked.

Marcus hugged a pillow on the sofa and laughed. "I'm just reminiscing about what it feels like to hold a baby. It's been years since we had a child in the family, and I'm looking forward to it!"

Catherine spoke with difficulty, "Grandpa, you can let Charles work on that. He's the eldest in the Windsor family, not my turn."

Marcus suddenly perked up. "That's fine! I'll urge him tomorrow! You go rest now."

"Good night." Catherine turned and went upstairs, hearing Marcus laughing to himself while holding the pillow, seemingly coming up with names for his future great-grandchild.

She quickly assembled her miniature laptop, her slender, jade-like fingers typing rapidly, pulling up the dark web page.

Catherine: [Send this video to the head of the Hughes family under the name of the Faceless Ones.]

Jared opened the video, spraying out the instant noodles in his mouth.

Jared: [Damn, the Hughes family has the guts to go after you! I'll send it right away. Do you need to add any message?]

Catherine: [Tell them to prepare three hundred million dollars, or the video goes to the Windsor family. Either pay up or face the consequences.]

'The Hughes family has repeatedly pushed my buttons. Do they really think I won't fight back? My retaliation is not something ordinary people can handle,' Catherine thought.
