Chapter 40 All Birthday Gifts

The word on the street was that the Windsor family's daughter was throwing a birthday bash, and it had the whole elite circle buzzing!

Clara caught wind of it too. She scrolled through her phone, eyeing the fancy setup posted by some marketing accounts, and her face twisted with envy.

"Celeste, what's the deal with the Windsor family? They snagged the best house in Starry Residence for their daughter's party, and I heard they dropped 1.5 billion dollars, including renovations."

Celeste peeled off her face mask and rubbed the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes, saying, "The Windsor family is top-tier elite in Imperia City. Have you locked down the marriage plans with Lucas?"

Clara blushed and nodded.

"Yeah, Lucas said he'd get engaged to me once he's better."

"That's good!"

Celeste would only chill if Lucas was locked down tight.

Thinking about Lucas's sweet and caring nature, Clara felt pretty satisfied.

Oliver had just walked in when Clara rushed over to him, "Oliver, I wanna buy a necklace for the engagement."

"Alright, I'll get it for you!"

"Thanks, Oliver! Three million dollars should do it!"

Oliver was shocked, "What kind of necklace costs three million dollars? Clara, you can't be so extravagant and wasteful. Don't try to keep up with others. All our money is hard-earned by me!"

Clara felt super wronged.

'I wanna spend three million dollars on a necklace, and that's wasteful?'

Oliver's phone rang.

"Mr. Smith, our recent project investment tanked, and the loss is pretty big."

"Oh, investment flops happen. What did Hill Finance say?"

Oliver wasn't too fazed by the investment flop. He had plenty of those every year. With Hill Finance and Summit Financial backing him, the Smith Group never worried about finding other partners.

The secretary hesitated, "Other companies have cut ties with us."

"Let them! We still have Hill Finance and Summit Financial, so what's the big deal?"

Hill Finance, a financing company that popped up in recent years, quickly made a name for itself with sharp investment insights and a solid capital chain, landing several major deals and showing strong capabilities.

Summit Financial, second only to a few monopoly enterprises in Imperia City, opened an oil mine last year and had a steady stream of projects, with many companies eager to team up with them.

'With Hill Finance and Summit Financial in our corner, many companies would be dying to get in with the Smith Group.'

"Mr. Smith, Hill Finance and Summit Financial have sued us, saying our investment losses are too big, and they want to take legal action."

"What did you say?" Oliver jumped up from the sofa, panicking!

'Even though our deal terms include a betting agreement, it’s never been enforced before.'

"Nexus Media also said our film caused them huge losses and they want three hundred million dollars in compensation."

Nexus Media was a big-name film company in Imperia City.

Oliver had invested in several films, using actors and directors from Nexus Media, but he swapped out the lead actors for his own mistresses, having award-winning actors from Nexus Media play second fiddle to his mistresses.

"Didn't Nexus Media keep quiet about this before? Why are they asking for compensation now?" Oliver asked.

"Harmony Enterprises also wants compensation, saying the artists we sent over have bad behavior, causing a recent public backlash and demanding compensation."

Oliver was floored. He did send a few women to Harmony Enterprises, thinking turning his mistresses into stars would save him some cash. But those women had sketchy private lives, and now Harmony's rep was in the gutter!

"Why is everyone hitting me up for compensation? Get a lawyer! Have our legal team jump on this ASAP. I need to meet with the bigwigs of those companies personally!"

'This has to be a mistake! I must be dreaming. How else could I be getting hit with so much bad news at once?'

"Our company's lawyer previously infringed on some documents, and Philip's firm contacted the prosecutor's office to file a public lawsuit..."

Oliver nearly passed out!

The Smith Group's legal team usually cut corners, using whatever documents they could find to save costs. Philip's legal documents were everywhere, tied to any famous case. To view Philip's legal docs, you had to pay his firm a copyright fee, which Oliver had never paid. Each document viewing cost a hundred grand!

Oliver gritted his teeth and ordered, "Get the legal team moving, pay the money, and have the finance department allocate the funds."

"You previously said you wanted to build roads and signal towers in your hometown, and today the finance department already transferred the money, so there are no extra funds in the account."

Oliver was baffled.

"When did I say I wanted to build roads in my hometown?"

'That rundown place, what's the point of fixing the roads there anyway? No media would report my good deeds!'

"Your video has been posted online. I thought it was your intention."

Oliver quickly ended the call and checked the trending topics online.

[Rural entrepreneur commemorates hometown, spends money to build roads and towers.]

His disheveled appearance in front of Neil had been captured and posted online. There were also many comments saying he was bald. In the video, he clearly stated that he would build roads and signal towers for his hometown!

'Five million dollars! What kind of road is worth five million dollars!'

"Contact the bosses of those companies for me; I'm heading to the office to invite them out for a meal." Oliver called his secretary and gave instructions.

There were too many companies. If he invited them for a treat separately, it would cost too much. After all, the last time they discussed cooperation, they were doing it together.

"Let's go to the same hotel as last time. It's cheap."

"Okay, I'll contact them right away."

Hanging up the phone, Oliver let out a long sigh of relief.

'Those companies must be nuts! How could they all demand compensation from me at once? If the Smith Group pays all the compensation, it would become a second-rate company, unable to hold its head high in Serenitia City.'

"Clara, contact the Johnson family and ask for their help," Oliver said.

"Okay, I'll call Lucas right away. He will definitely help us!"

'Such a good son-in-law, who secretly helps them renovate the old house, would surely not stand by and do nothing. With the Johnson family's help, the Smith family would definitely get through this!' Thinking of Lucas, Oliver's mood lifted.
