Chapter 211 Alexander Gets Injured
Emilia didn't quite catch what George said. Catherine spun around from the passenger seat to look at George and Emilia. "George, you haven't been home for two days. Are you heading back?"
George quickly pulled out his phone and opened the camera to check his face. "Wow, they really did a good job. My face looks fine. Let's go home." If Aurora saw his face injured, the entire Windsor Family wouldn't get any sleep.
After confirming there were no injuries on his face, George let out a sigh of relief and glanced at Emilia beside him. "Emilia, you should come too."
"Can I? It's already so late. Isn't it rude to show up unannounced? I haven't even got a gift for Mrs. Windsor," Emilia said.
Catherine shook her head. "It's okay, my mom is really looking forward to you coming."
The car engine started, and they headed towards the Windsor Mansion as the night grew darker. As soon as they left, a car parked in the reeds also followed, driving in the opposite direction.
The Windsor Mansion. The Windsor Family members were already asleep. After settling Emilia in the guest room, Catherine also returned to her room.
As soon as she got back to her room, her phone rang. Annie's anxious voice came through the receiver. "Are you asleep? Could you please come over and check on Mr. Howard? He's in bad shape!"
Catherine frowned slightly. "Where is he?"
"He's at The Howard Mansion. He refuses to go to the hospital. Please come over and take a look!" Annie said.
"Give me two minutes."
The Howard Mansion was just across the street. As Catherine reached the door, she saw Annie looking at her anxiously, with quite a bit of blood on her. "Miss! Mr. Howard is in the room. I'll take you there."
The vast Howard Mansion was in stark contrast to the lively Windsor Mansion, the house eerily quiet, with the sound of the fountain in the yard clearly audible.
As she approached Alexander's room door, a strong smell of blood hit her. Catherine frowned and said, "Why not go to the hospital?"
Annie replied, "Mr. Howard said it's not serious, and I couldn't persuade him, so I had to come to you. Luckily, you were willing to come."
Catherine walked closer, looking at Alexander. Alexander's eyes were tightly closed, his wounds seemed to have been simply treated, with no signs of infection, but the bandage on his wrist had somehow come undone, and blood was seeping out.
"First aid kit," Catherine ordered.
"I'll get it right away!" Annie hurriedly ran out to get the first aid kit, and when she returned, she saw Catherine's hand on Alexander's forehead. The temperature was high, probably a reaction to the injury.
After reapplying medicine and rebandaging Alexander's wrist, Catherine carefully checked his other wounds, most of which were from the explosion at Heritage Storage Depot.
"Miss, is Mr. Howard okay?" Annie asked.
"He'll be fine. He has a fever, but he'll wake up once it subsides."
Annie breathed a sigh of relief, having been on edge all night, finally relaxed a bit.
Catherine looked up at her, her voice carrying a sense of authority. "Come here."
Annie instinctively replied, "Yes!" For some reason, facing the frowning Catherine was even more nerve-wracking than seeing the principal during her school days.
Catherine beckoned Annie over. "Alexander is fine for now. Come with me. Don't you need to bandage your wounds?"
Annie was momentarily stunned, thinking, 'I have been so worried about Mr. Howard that I forgot I have injuries myself. It is normal for an assassin to get hurt during a mission. When I called Catherine, I was prepared to be questioned by her. But unexpectedly, Catherine is concerned about my injuries!'
Annie said, "I'm fine. I can bandage myself!"
Catherine gave Annie a look that brooked no argument. "Come on. I don't want to repeat myself."
Annie quickly followed Catherine to the guest room. When she undressed, she found that her wounds had stuck to her clothes, causing her to gasp in pain.
As Catherine cleaned Annie's wounds, she asked, "Now tell me, what did Alexander do to get injured?"
"He ran into a gang fight at the border. Someone wanted to go down fighting and had planted multiple bombs in advance. We weren't involved, just happened to pass by."
Running into gang fights at the border was nothing unusual; almost every day, rival gangs clashed. But the Shadow Syndicate, being one of the top two organizations on the dark web, wouldn't make such a rookie mistake.
This could only mean that the place where the gangs were fighting was exactly where Alexander had intended to go.
"Where did this happen?" Catherine asked.
Annie hesitated, but meeting Catherine's piercing gaze, she shivered and closed her eyes, saying, "Near the abandoned lab of the Galactic Aurora Collective."
The Galactic Aurora Collective's lab covered a large area, and it was common for gangs to target it. Even though it was abandoned, the Galactic Aurora Collective's reputation still stood strong and someone always wanted to find something valuable inside.
But if they did find something valuable, the Galactic Aurora Collective wouldn't be the Galactic Aurora Collective anymore.
"What was Alexander doing there?" Catherine asked.
"You should know we took down the Abyssal Blades. Mr. Howard suspects that his mother's death is related to the Galactic Aurora Collective, so he wanted to investigate."
The death of Alexander's mother had always been a heavy burden for him. For so many years, Alexander had never given up on investigating the truth.
Catherine put down the gauze and bandages. "Alright, go rest. Remember to take these anti-inflammatory meds."
Annie came to her senses and realized that Catherine had asked her all those questions to distract her, thinking Catherine was so kind. "I'll rest in the guest room. Call me if you need anything!"
"Go back. We don't need you here. I'll tell Alexander if he asks." Catherine said.
Resting at The Howard Mansion wouldn't be restful. Annie's injuries were much more severe than Alexander's and she required a period of recuperation.
"Yes."
Catherine stood up and looked at the cold and quiet Howard Mansion. "Has it always been this quiet here?"
Annie nodded. "Yes, ever since I joined the Shadow Syndicate, the Howard Mansion has always been like this. Mr. Felix Howard would rather stay in the hospital than come back, and Mr. Alexander Howard has always been alone. Since meeting you, Mr. Alexander Howard has been coming home more often!"
This house was so perfectly maintained it could be a showroom for a renovation company, with not a trace of human warmth. The Windsor Mansion was always bustling, but here it was eerily quiet.
Annie couldn't help but say, "I've seen Mr. Howard zoning out in his room many times. Later, I found out you live right across the street."
Catherine was silent for a moment, then nodded at Annie. "I understand. You go back now. I'll keep an eye on Alexander."
"Okay, thank you."
After Annie left, Catherine reopened Alexander's room door and walked in. She reached out to touch Alexander's forehead, but he grabbed her hand.
In his sleep, he seemed unaware, mumbling out of habit. "Catherine, don't go. Don't leave me!"
