Chapter 77 Miss Lowe
The next day, Eula set out for work early, taking the subway. Formerly a young lady of the affluent Lowe family, public transportation had been foreign to her. However, in the six years since leaving the Lowe household, she had become accustomed to the subway, rarely taking cabs to save money – a penny saved was a penny earned.
The subway was packed as always, but once she arrived at the office, she clocked in and headed straight to the executive level on the top floor.
Her destination was the Executive Secretary's department, where the Chief Executive Secretary had already received orders to prepare a desk for the new personal assistant - Eula's position.
Upon entering the CEO's office, she was shown to her new workspace near the entry. "This will be your office from now on," she was told. Eula nodded politely and thanked her. Nancy, the Chief Executive Secretary, noted Eula's beauty but saw that her clothes were out of fashion – a throwback from a past season.
Nonetheless, she recognized Eula was receiving special treatment no one else in the secretary's office had. It made her wonder if Eula had a unique relationship with the CEO – perhaps she was even the future Mrs. Nash.
With this in mind, Nancy was extra courteous, offering her assistance for anything Eula might need.
The folks at Nash Group all seemed incredibly approachable and amiable. Sitting down at her new desk, equipped with just a computer and a phone, Eula placed her water bottle on the desk and glanced around the spacious, brightly-lit office, dominated by shades of white and gray. Uncertain of her duties, she approached his desk to tidy it up.
Just then, the door opened and in walked a man in a black coat. As he took off his jacket, Myles moved to take it, but upon seeing Eula, he called out to her instead, "Miss Lowe, could you hang the coat, please?"
Eula knew it was part of her job, so she took Judson's coat and hung it on the rack. Returning to her desk, she watched him delegate tasks for the day at Nash Group.
When Myles left, he flashed her a subtle smile as he passed her desk.
"Miss Lowe, Mr. Nash likes to start his workday with a black coffee."
It was a reminder, and Eula stood up promptly.
"Oh, I'll get right on it."
She followed Myles out of the office, and he familiarized her with the executive suite. There were two break rooms, and one was exclusively for the president's use.
The space was stocked with Judson's usuals, each item a luxury, outrageously expensive.
Although Eula was struggling financially now, she had once been a wealthy heiress and was familiar with the brands. Myles patiently explained Judson's preferences, and Eula took notes on her phone; she was determined to serve that man well. After all, a $30,000 salary was crucial for her.
Eula brought coffee into the office and set it on Judson's desk.
"Judson, your coffee is ready. I added a bit of milk to make it easier on your stomach."
He usually took it black — no milk, no sugar — a sure way to get a bitter taste and agitate the stomach.
Judson glanced up at her for the first time today, his attire of a black suit, white shirt, and ink-blue tie accentuating his austere demeanor.
"Eula, do you know what a personal assistant does? Taking me to and from work. You missed this morning, so I'll dock your bonus."
