Sarah frowned at Karen’s plea. "Mom, I've made my decision. Please stop making excuses for Kyle."
Karen’s demeanor quickly soured, her unhappiness evident. "Sarah! So, it’s not enough for you even when I plead like this? I see that I mean nothing to you, and neither does your family! Hah! When you branched out from the Johnson family business, your father and I supported you. I regret that now. It feels like we shot ourselves in the foot! Now that you're a successful CEO, you look down on your family. Oh, why was I fated to have such an ungrateful daughter?"
Sarah felt a headache coming on as she listened to Karen's complaints.
After the company's recent setbacks, her faith in Kyle's abilities had evaporated.
There was no way she would let him return as the director, but she was equally tired of Karen’s incessant nagging.
"Mom, no matter what you say, Kyle's just not cut out to be a CEO! If you really want him to lead, why don't we do this? I'll invest some of my own money and help Kyle start his own business. He won't just be the CEO; he'll be the boss!
Besides, with this investment, he can choose to do something he's passionate about, which has got to be better than sticking with the building materials market. Don't you think?"
"Hmm..."
Karen hesitated, then turned to Kyle. "What do you think, son?"
Kyle's eyes lit up as he nodded vigorously. "Oh, that would be awesome! I’d be my own boss, and nobody could tell me what to do! Haha! Don't worry, sis. I'll make us the wealthiest family in Houston within a year! By the way, how much will you be able to invest?"
Sarah answered, "I can put up a million dollars at most. That's nearly all my personal savings."
Kyle looked disappointed. "What? Only a million? That's... that's not much for a business..."
Karen expressed her dissatisfaction. "You have a company worth several hundred million and you can only spare a million for Kyle's startup? You should invest several million, at least. You say you don't have the money, but what about selling a portion of your company shares? Wouldn't that raise a substantial amount?"
"Uh..."
Sarah appeared troubled. The company hadn't fully recovered from its challenges, and selling her shares could cause many negative repercussions.
And more importantly, the SR Group shares had been transferred from that enigmatic individual. How could she sell them so easily?
"No way! I'm not selling my shares! I only have a million! Take it or leave it."
When Karen saw Sarah's firm stance, she knew that pressuring her further wouldn't change a thing.
An idea sparked in her eyes. She glanced at Ryder before speaking up. "Honey, don't you have that diamond necklace, the 'Eternal Love'? You hardly wear it. Why not use it to support Kyle's venture? Didn't Kyle say so himself? With the right support, he could be Houston's number one in a year!
By then, you’ll be able to buy not just one necklace, but ten! Your little brother will take care of that easily."
She winked at Kyle, who quickly nodded in agreement, "Just trust me, sis! When I'm rich and at the top, your company will benefit too!"
The Eternal Love necklace? Sarah was taken aback. She hadn't expected Karen to suggest that. That necklace wasn't just precious – it was Ryder’s first gift, symbolizing his undying love for her. There was no way she’d sell it to fund Kyle's business.
But when she saw Karen and Kyle’s hopeful looks, Sarah knew that if she refused again, there was no telling what kind of trouble they might stir up.
At that moment, Ryder, who had been quiet for a while, suddenly spoke up. "If Kyle is so confident about starting a business and becoming the top dog, he’ll have our support. But since Sarah's tapped out, I'll cover the rest!
“I can stake 4 million, and with Sarah pitching in her million, that's 5 million. It's not a fortune, but it should be enough to start a company. After all, when Sarah first took over the branch office, it was only worth 2 million.
“I believe in Kyle's talent and abilities. He's bound to outshine Sarah, right?"
All eyes at the table turned to Ryder, visibly stunned.
Sarah was shocked. From her perspective, Ryder and Kyle were like oil and water. Why would Ryder suddenly decide to finance him? It didn't add up.
Karen, Kyle, and Ernest were astonished too. Where did Ryder get all that money?
Without missing a beat, Kyle expressed his skepticism. "Ryder! This is about me starting my own big business, not a joke for your amusement! You're just a small-time security team leader at Maple Real Estate. How on earth do you have that kind of cash?"
Karen chimed in, annoyed, "Eat your food! If you don't have the money, keep your mouth shut!"
Ryder calmly pulled out his phone, tapped away for a moment, then showed Karen and Kyle his bank app balance.
"Four... hundred... thousand... four million dollars?!"
Karen's eyes widened in disbelief.
Kyle's jaw dropped, and he was rendered speechless.
A glint of greed flashed in Karen's eyes as she demanded, "Where did you get all that money? Have you been hiding a secret stash from me all these years?"
Ryder simply replied, "Don't worry about where the money came from. I just want to know if you want it or not. If you don't, I have other uses for it."
"We'll take it, we’ll take it!" Kyle quickly exclaimed. He had never seen so much cash in his life.
Ryder said, "Okay, you can use this money for your investment. But let's be clear, this is a loan. It’ll have to be repaid eventually. We want just the 5 million back—no interest. You keep all the profits, large or small, from becoming the big boss or the richest man. Deal?"
Kyle's face lit up with joy, thinking a deal like this was too good to be true. He readily agreed.
"No problem! No problem at all! Just transfer the money to me, okay?"
"Wait a second," Ryder said, his eyes narrowing as his tone grew more serious. "What if the investment tanks and you lose it all? What then?"
