Chapter 295 Take Your Medicine
Sarah was shocked to see him. "Mr. Reed, is that you?"
Ryder was also a bit surprised.
Charles Reed was nearly fifty, with an average look, big head, thick neck, and a belly like he was pregnant.
He lived in the Paris Bay community, right next to Sarah's family.
He used to be in business and had some money, making him relatively wealthy in the area.
Karen often compared Ernest to Charles, calling Ernest useless.
Ryder had heard neighbors gossiping about Karen and Charles being cozy while dancing at night, hinting at an affair.
Ryder pretended not to hear any of it since he had no standing in the Johnson family and was always bullied. Speaking up would have only aroused Karen's wrath.
Charles stepped forward and said to Sarah, "Yep, it's me. If I didn't come, you'd fool everyone in Houston with your heartless ways! I have to expose you, not just for Ernest, but for Houston's sake!"
Sarah was stunned. Charles had always been friendly and concerned about her career. Why the sudden change?
A passerby asked, "You said Sarah caused Ernest to be paralyzed. What's going on?"
Charles nodded, eyes red, and told the crowd, "Ernest had high blood pressure and fainted at home multiple times. His wife and son wanted to take him to the hospital, but Sarah found it too troublesome and refused, saying it was normal and he'd be fine after a couple of days of rest.
"Ernest's wife and son had no income and couldn't afford the hospital. I couldn't stand it anymore and paid for his check-up. The doctor warned us that another episode could cause paralysis and that we had to be careful with his diet and lifestyle.
Recently, Sarah kicked Ernest and his family out, leaving them homeless. Ernest caught a cold outside, his high blood pressure relapsed, and he became paralyzed. Isn't she the one to blame?"
The crowd was furious.
"How can there be such a woman?"
"She looks pretty but is so wicked!"
Some were skeptical. "Isn't that a bit exaggerated? Sarah runs a billion-dollar company; she wouldn't be stingy about hospital expenses, right?"
"What kind of hatred would make a daughter so heartless to her father?"
Charles, unfazed, explained, "You don't know. When Sarah married Ryder, Ernest was the most opposed. No father would agree to such a marriage!"
"That's how Ernest and Ryder ended up hating each other. But since Ryder was Sarah's husband, he could badmouth Ernest. Over time, Sarah started disliking Ernest more and more, always arguing with him. Sarah and Ryder, controlling the family's money, treated everyone at home like slaves, often beating and scolding them!"
After venting his frustrations, Charles squatted down, grabbed Ernest's hand on the wheelchair, and choked up, "Ernest, I'm sorry! There's nothing I can do. I'm just an outsider. I can help for a while, but not forever! I'm so sorry I can't give you justice! I'm sorry!"
Charles slapped himself twice, his emotions peaking. But Ernest, with his eyes bloodshot, stared at Charles with fiery anger. A flash of panic flashed Charles' face as he turned Ernest's head away. He told the crowd, "Did you see that? Ernest is so angry just hearing this. Imagine how he feels!"
Ernest tried to speak, but his mouth twitched, and he couldn't. Saliva dribbled down his mouth. Karen quickly stepped forward, frowning as she wiped his saliva with a tissue. She then put on a pitiful expression, took a bottle of medicine from her bag, and placed a pill in Ernest's mouth. "Ernest, time to take your medicine!"
Ernest couldn't move his mouth to take the pill, so Karen tried to force it in with her finger. At that moment, Sarah rushed up, knocking the medicine bottle and pills out of Karen's hand. Her eyes were red as she shouted, "Karen, enough! What do you want our family to become before you stop?"
Karen immediately cried out, "Oh my God, I can't live anymore. This medicine was bought with the money I got from selling my blood yesterday! And you just knocked it over! How cruel you are!"
Kyle rushed up to hug Karen, and they cried together, making a very pitiful scene. The onlookers felt sympathetic and began criticizing Sarah and Ryder. "What kind of people are these? Making money with such a wicked heart!"
"I can't stand it. I'm going to record a video and expose this. Is there no morality left?"
"I saw the press conference a few days ago and thought Sarah and Ryder were victims. Maybe we've all been deceived!"
"These two are beyond saving! We can't let them near Ernest!"
If it weren't for the SR Group security guards at the company entrance, some might have already attacked Ryder and Sarah. Sarah was both anxious and angry. She just wanted to get Ernest to the hospital, but given the situation, it was impossible to leave. Even if she could take Ernest away, Karen would likely accuse her and Ryder of trying to destroy evidence and secretly kill Ernest.
What should she do?
Just when Sarah felt utterly helpless, a clear voice suddenly rang out from the crowd. The noise immediately quieted down. Everyone looked in the direction of the voice. They saw Ryder retracting his hand from Karen's cheek, speaking in a mocking tone, "Had enough of your performance? If not, how about I send you to the prairie to act for three days and nights?"
