Chapter 663 Late for Work!

Ryder watched Sarah sleeping beside him, last night's events still vivid in his mind.

This was only their second time truly making love, and both times had happened when he wasn't fully conscious. He hadn't even had time to properly savor the experience.

A thought suddenly crossed his mind: What if he gave her another injection now? Would she become even more compliant?

He immediately squashed that idea. He wanted mutual affection, not chemical control.

Just then, Sarah's eyelashes fluttered, and her eyes snapped open. She bolted upright with a yelp.

"It's almost nine! We're going to be late!" She glanced at the clock in alarm. "Hurry up and get ready. I'll drop you at the delivery station on my way to the office."

She scrambled out of bed, her silk nightgown perfectly outlining her curves. Ryder's eyes went wide. "Damn, babe. Your body is incredible. I can't get enough of looking at you."

"Stop it!" Sarah's cheeks instantly flushed crimson. She shot him a playful glare before darting into the bathroom.

The door locked behind her.

Ryder couldn't help but smile. Sarah still blushed like a schoolgirl. Her shyness was endearing.

---

After getting ready, they headed out. Ryder was about to grab his electric scooter when Sarah called to him.

"Get in," she said, already starting her Porsche. "I have a client meeting today, and your delivery station is on the way."

"Sweet!" Ryder happily slid into the passenger seat.

During the drive, he couldn't stop stealing glances at her.

Sarah noticed his sidelong looks from her peripheral vision. Her lips curled into a small smile, but she pretended to be annoyed. "Hey, why do you keep staring at me? I can't focus on driving!"

"My bad," Ryder said, looking away momentarily before adding, "But it's your fault for being so gorgeous."

"You..." Sarah's face turned bright red again, and she pointedly ignored him.

Ryder continued admiring her, his mood lighter than it had been in ages.

Soon, they pulled up outside the delivery station.

As Ryder reached for the door handle, Sarah grabbed his arm. "Wait, I'm coming with you."

"Huh? Don't you have that meeting?"

"It's at eleven, and it's not even nine-thirty yet," she replied matter-of-factly. "I want to see where you work. Maybe I can help you carry some packages."

"No need for package lifting—my arm's still injured." Ryder gave her a mysterious smile and raised an eyebrow. "Today, my job is cooking the books."

"Cooking the books?" Sarah's eyes widened.

"Long story short," Ryder lowered his voice with a smug grin, "think of me as a spy who's infiltrated enemy territory."

"Really?" Sarah laughed at his dramatic flair.

They walked into the station together, and Ryder's coworkers immediately flocked around them.

"Ryder, finally! Why are you late today?"

"Yeah, Calista was looking for you earlier. I covered for you, said you were in the bathroom!"

Since everyone had learned about Ryder's connection to Vice President Zane yesterday, their attitude toward him had completely changed.

"Sorry about that—had some stuff going on last night." Ryder greeted them with a smile. "Thanks for the cover. I'll check in with Calista soon."

"Great! Just don't slip up!" The coworker then turned his attention to Sarah, his eyes widening. "And who's this?"

That question voiced what everyone was thinking. From the moment Sarah stepped out of the Porsche, all eyes had been glued to her.

Ryder grinned proudly as he wrapped an arm around Sarah's waist. "Everyone, I'd like you to meet my wife, Sarah. We've been married for three years!"

The crowd erupted in astonishment:

"Your wife? Holy crap!"

"Ryder, did you save the galaxy or something? How'd you land a wife this beautiful?"

"Unbelievable!"

Surrounded by their awestruck stares, Sarah blushed slightly before graciously smiling at everyone. "You're all too kind. Ryder is quite exceptional himself."

Their colleagues were even more shocked: What had Ryder done to deserve her? Not only was Sarah stunning and driving a luxury car, but she was defending him too! They'd previously joked about him being in a matrilocal marriage, but now they realized how good he really had it!

Just then, a sharp voice cut through the chatter.

Station manager Calista emerged from the office. Spotting Ryder, her face immediately soured. "Ryder! Don't think having Mr. Martin backing you means you can do whatever you want! I've been waiting forever for you—get in here and balance these accounts!"

She'd been struggling with a mess of accounting issues and was counting on Ryder to fix them.

But as soon as she finished speaking, her gaze fell on Sarah, and her eyes bulged.

A second later, jealousy twisted her features. "Ryder, why did you bring such a pretty girl to our station? How do you expect anyone to work properly now?"

Calista, not blessed in the looks department herself, particularly resented beautiful women.

Ryder's expression darkened. "You've got it wrong. This is my wife."

"Your wife?" Calista's fleshy face twitched dramatically, her eyes filled with contempt and mockery. "Someone like you? Married to someone that beautiful?"

Just as she finished speaking, a commotion erupted on the street outside the station.

A gang of about fifteen thugs with steel pipes and tattooed arms was marching toward them with menacing expressions.

Their hostile intent was unmistakable.
