Adam looked totally bummed and helpless in the face of Larry's arrogant attitude.
He had worked his butt off to become the duty manager here!
But Larry just crushed all his efforts with one sentence.
Seeing Adam's face, Larry smirked, "But hey, since you've been so dedicated all these years, I'll give you a shot! Just apologize to Theodore in front of everyone and slap your classmate twice. Maybe then I'll let you be a janitor here! You better jump on this chance. I heard your mom's sick and needs over fifty grand for medical bills. Lose this job, and you can kiss her goodbye!"
Larry's words made Adam's face darken, and his fists clenched tight.
Because, unfortunately, Larry was right. His mom, Aria Knight, was diagnosed with severe kidney disease two weeks ago and needed a transplant. They found a donor, but the surgery would cost at least sixty grand!
And there was no way Adam could come up with that kind of money.
Larry kept pushing, "Adam, everyone in Jakarda City knows you're a mama's boy. What now? Gonna let her die? Think you can repay her for raising you by letting her kick the bucket?"
Larry's words cut deep into Adam's heart.
It hurt like hell.
Ryder, sitting on the sofa, had a complicated look in his eyes.
He never thought Adam's situation would be this bad after all these years.
Everyone else was staring at Adam too.
On one side was his mom, and on the other was his classmate.
It seemed obvious he'd choose his mom.
Once Adam turned against Ryder, Ryder surely would lose all confidence to continue resisting.
As everyone watched, Adam took a deep breath and said, "I don't have the money for my mom's treatment, and I really need it, but I won't betray a good friend and beg for your pity. I couldn't live with myself if I did!"
Larry's eyebrows shot up. "You think not treating your mom will let you live comfortably?"
Adam's face was set. "That's none of your business. Whether I sell a kidney or take out a high-interest loan, I'll get the money for her treatment! No matter what, as long as I'm here tonight, I'm standing with Ryder!"
Everyone present went wild!
Adam's choice was totally unexpected!
No one expected him to be so stubborn and thought, 'Is he crazy to risk his mom's and perhaps even his own life for a friend?'
Larry squinted and sneered, "Fine, you make me do this! Come on, grab these people, especially Adam. Let Theodore deal with him later!"
The bar employees hesitated at the order and looked at Adam.
After all, Adam had always been good to them. Even though he was the duty manager and had a higher position, he never treated them badly and always helped them out!
Right then, they were hesitant to go against Adam because of their past with him.
Seeing this, Larry's face twisted in anger, and he snapped, "You bunch of useless idiots, what are you waiting for? Do you all want to lose your jobs? Anyone who disobeys tonight will have their pay docked and be fired. And if you cross Theodore, you can kiss living in Jakarda City goodbye."
Those threats hit hard!
Even though they liked Adam, they couldn't risk Larry's wrath, so they reluctantly moved toward Adam and said, "Adam, sorry, we have no choice!"
As soon as they spoke, two guys grabbed Adam, and the rest quickly surrounded Ryder and the others!
It looked like Theodore and his crew had the upper hand!
Seeing this, Theodore's face lit up with a smug grin. He raised an eyebrow at Larry and said, "Larry, you did good this time. Keep it up, and I'll owe you one!"
Larry responded with a sycophantic smile, "Thank you, I'll do my best for you!"
Theodore glanced at his phone and sneered at Ryder, "It's almost time. My guys will be here soon! Come on, take a guess. How many of them will show up? And how many can your guys take down?"
Just as Theodore finished speaking, the door to the private room burst open, and a loud voice rang out, "You have one hundred twenty-one men, but they won't be coming tonight!"
Everyone's attention snapped to the door!
Standing there was a medium-built guy with a buzz cut, black-framed glasses, and a black mole on his forehead!
Behind the man, Hubert Wheeler, were a dozen businessmen in sharp suits!
Seeing Hubert, Theodore and Larry's faces changed, and they exclaimed in surprise, "Hubert! What brings you here?"
Hubert was a big shot in Jakarda City, the chairman of the largest seafood export company in town!
A billionaire worth over four hundred million dollars!
He usually kept a low profile and rarely showed up at social events!
But that didn't lessen Hubert's clout in Jakarda City!
Hubert smiled faintly. "What? Am I not welcome here?"
Larry shook his head quickly, "No, no, that's not what I meant! It's an honor to have you here!"
The shock in his heart was off the charts!
Because he noticed that besides Hubert, the businessmen behind him were also big deals!
He couldn't help but think, 'Why do so many high-profile people suddenly show up tonight?'
While he was still reeling, Louis squeezed through the crowd and quickly ran to Hubert, bowing respectfully and fawning, "Mr. Wheeler, good evening, are you here to see me?"
