Chapter 314 What Do You Think of My Mom?

The next day at Houston First Hospital, Ernest had just wrapped up a surgery in the morning. It went pretty well, and the doctor said he could get back about seventy percent of his health with time.

Since Maple Group, which Ryder owned, was the major shareholder of the hospital, Ryder easily got Ernest a high-end private room.

There was more good news—Thelma got discharged! She had been attacked by her ex-husband and was in bad shape, but after a long recovery, she finally recovered.

At the hospital entrance, Thelma, with tears in her eyes, thanked Ryder and Sarah, "I can't thank you enough. You both are my biggest benefactors!"

Ryder waved it off with a smile. "No need to be so formal. Thelma. Your future will be much brighter."

Thelma nodded eagerly. "I want to repay your kindness. How about lunch at my place today? I'm fully recovered and can cook."

Ryder and Sarah exchanged glances and agreed. With no pressing matters, a visit to Thelma's sounded good, especially since she was a great cook.

They all got into Rex's car and headed to Thelma's house. On the way, Ryder looked out the window and felt his right eyelid twitch. They said a twitching left eye brought fortune, while a twitching right eye brought trouble. Ryder didn't believe in superstition but still remained alert.

Even though he had recently turned things around at Maple Real Estate, crushing Phoenix Real Estate and hurting the Johnson family, Ryder still felt uneasy.

His worries came from two sources. One was Sam. Sam had shown up during the last conflict but managed to escape the police. With no relatives in Houston and his accounts frozen, it should've been hard for him to hide. This meant he had other forces helping him.

Ryder couldn't figure out who these forces were, but he knew Sam was still out there, waiting for a chance to strike.

The other concern was Sandra. She was the most cunning person Ryder had faced in a long time, far more dangerous than others like Grandma Johnson, Abigail, and Karen. Barbara had warned him that Sandra hadn't shown all her cards yet and would seek stronger revenge. So, the current peace might just be the peace before the storm.

"What are you thinking about?" Sarah asked Ryder.

"Nothing much," Ryder replied with a faint smile. He didn't want Sarah to get too involved in these matters.

Sarah sighed, "Dad had his surgery today, but that woman hasn't shown up at all. I wonder how heartless she could be!"

The woman Sarah was talking about was Karen.

Ryder gave a bitter smile. "She's probably plotting with Kyle on how to squeeze more money out of you. Money's the only thing they care about."

In the past, Sarah would have argued back, but after everything, she was disillusioned with Karen and Kyle. She just stared blankly out the window.

Meanwhile, in a rundown apartment in Houston, Kyle angrily threw his fast food on the ground. "I can't eat this crap! I want barbecue! I want pizza!"

Karen sighed. "Kyle, we don't have the money for barbecue. I have less than $10 left."

Kyle, with a sullen face, said, "Then go borrow money from Charles! He paid for my finger surgery before!"

Karen's face changed at the mention of Charles. He had promised to treat her well, divorce Nancy, and marry her, even giving her his savings and house. But after their plan against Sarah failed, Charles blocked her and cut all contact. What a jerk!

Kyle saw Karen's difficulty and angrily said, "So what now? Are you just going to watch me starve? I can't stand it anymore!"

Karen was at her wit's end. She remembered how easy it used to be to get money from Sarah, living comfortably at home.

As Karen sighed, the door was suddenly kicked open! Several people walked in. Kyle saw the man leading them and almost fell off his chair. "Mr. Miller, what brought you here?"

It was Daniel, with a fading slap mark on his cheek. Kyle was terrified because he had borrowed seventy thousand dollars from Ryder and Sarah for a startup, lost it at the Radiant Revive Spa's underground casino, tricked Karen into thinking he was kidnapped to get another thirty thousand dollars, lost that too, and then borrowed another forty thousand dollars from the casino, which he also lost. Kyle now owed the Davis family forty thousand dollars.

Seeing Daniel, Kyle was genuinely scared. Daniel said calmly, "I'm here to see you."

Kyle dropped to his knees, crying and pleading, "Mr. Miller, please give me a few more days. I'll find a way to pay back the money! If you're here for that, I can offer you some compensation. How about my mom? She's almost fifty, but she's well-maintained! If you like, you can take her for a few days! Do whatever you want!"

Karen was utterly shocked. Was this really her son? How could he say such a thing?

Daniel glanced at Karen with disgust. "Shut up! Don't disgust me with that. I'm not here to collect the debt today. My boss wants to see you. Come with me."
