Chapter 403 How to Play
Heather felt like she was gonna hurl right then and there.
In a fit of rage, she yelled, "Abigail! Did you seriously touch poop with your hands, you little brat?"
Abigail wanted to fess up, but that wasn't the point.
The real kicker was, she never thought her payback on Ryder would drag Heather into the mess!
She jumped up and tried to help Heather, babbling, "Grandma Johnson, you okay? I didn't mean to!"
Heather clutched her waist with one hand and leaned on Abigail's shoulder with the other.
She couldn't shake the feeling that Abigail reeked of something nasty!
But she swallowed her disgust and asked suspiciously, "You just said Ryder owes you money. What's that about?"
Abigail gritted her teeth and said, "Grandma, Ryder owes me ten million bucks, but he only gave me $9.90 and bailed. You gotta back me up!"
Heather's eyes nearly popped out of her head at the mention of that much cash!
A greedy glint flashed in her eyes as she looked at Ryder and smirked. "Ryder, we're kinda family, but let's cut the crap. You owe Abigail a ton of money, you should pay up!"
Ryder stayed cool and said, "Do you even know why she asked me for that money?"
Heather shook her head. "No clue!"
Ryder went on, "Because the recording I just played for you was given to me by Abigail. She was trying to squeeze ten million bucks outta me. Now do you get it?"
"What?" Heather's face twisted, and she whipped around to glare at Abigail. "Was it you?"
Abigail's body shook, sensing she was in deep trouble.
She'd been so obsessed with the money that she lost her cool. She shouldn't have mentioned the ten million bucks in front of Heather!
So, when Heather suddenly grilled her, Abigail was caught off guard and stammered!
"This has nothing to do with me. Ryder's setting me up. I don't know anything about the recording, let alone the real reason for Kenneth's death!"
As soon as she said it, Abigail's face froze, and she wished she could slap herself!
It was over, she'd said too much!
Heather's old face turned dark.
If Ryder had said the recording was from Abigail from the start, she wouldn't have bought it.
But now, with Abigail's sketchy behavior and her obvious slip-up, it was clear the recording with Sandra was Abigail's doing!
Thinking it over, only someone like Abigail, a core family member, could get their hands on such a secret convo in the Johnson family.
Realizing this, Heather slapped Abigail across the face without a second thought.
She fumed, "You worthless piece of crap, betraying the family for money, have you no shame? Do you think you deserve all the care I've given you over the years?"
Another slap followed!
"All these years, you've lived off the family, blowing money left and right. Besides living in luxury, what have you done that's worth a damn? How could I have a granddaughter like you? You..."
The more Heather ranted, the angrier she got, her chest heaving like crazy, and then—bam!—a sharp pain hit her heart!
Suddenly, her eyes rolled back, and she hit the ground with a thud, convulsing like mad.
Not far off, the maid saw it and freaked out, yelling, "Oh my God! She's having a heart attack! Somebody, help!"
Abigail was just as freaked and pointed at Ryder, screaming, "Ryder, you piece of crap! You pissed off Grandma Johnson and gave her a heart attack. If she gets hurt, it's on you!"
Ryder stayed cool as a cucumber and said, "You idiot, don't talk crap. She was clearly pissed off by you. Don't try to pin this on me!"
He glanced at Heather, who was still convulsing on the ground, and added, "If this old bat ever wakes up, tell her if she messes with Sarah again, I'll make sure she stays down for good!"
With that, Ryder walked out of the Johnson mansion with George and his crew, leaving behind a stunned Abigail, a panicked maid, and Heather foaming at the mouth...
After Ryder and George left, they continued searching for Sandra. Since Sarah wasn't taken by Heather, Sandra was the prime suspect!
Just as Ryder got into the car, his phone buzzed.
Unknown number!
He hit the answer button.
A familiar, slightly rough voice came through, "Ryder!"
Ryder's eyes narrowed. "Mark!"
This call was a curveball, especially since the news had just dropped this morning that Mark's casino got raided by the cops after he turned himself in, and he was hauled in for questioning!
Normally, an investigation into a big-time casino would take more than a day or two! Yet, here was Mark, calling him in just half a day!
Mark's voice came through again. "Mr. Clark, surprised?"
Ryder nodded, straight-up. "Yeah. Mark, your reach is way bigger than I thought!"
Mark chuckled. "I've been in Houston for years. If I couldn't handle this, I wouldn't be respected here! But yeah, my status took a nosedive after this, and there's no bouncing back for me!"
Ryder said, "You're pretty upfront!"
"When you're this close to the grave, there's not much to hide. I'm calling to set up our final showdown! Just you and me!" Mark said.
Ryder shot back, "Why should I agree to that?"
Mark went quiet for a few seconds, then his voice got serious. "Because I've got your biggest weakness in my hands!"
He moved the phone a bit.
Then Sarah's voice came through. "Ryder! Don't worry about me! I don't want to drag you down! You can't agree!"
Before she could finish, Mark took the phone back.
"So, you up for one last game?" Mark asked.
Ryder gripped the phone tight, a dangerous glint in his eyes!
Sarah being in Mark's hands was a shocker!
If anything happened to her, Ryder would never forgive himself!
Taking a deep breath, Ryder tried to stay cool and said, "Alright, what's the game?"
