Chapter 543 Phase One Complete
Earlier, an electrician was scared out of his wits, and now someone is shouting that the excavator has been driven away.
The workers were also discussing:
"Did you hear? On the night they started work at the stadium, there was an incident with the excavator running wild."
"Maybe it's true. After all, three years ago, a big fire here did kill quite a few people! I heard some of them, who had no background, were buried on the spot."
"Enough already. You're making me think of those grave visits back home. Creepy!"
Foreman Bethany naturally wasn't buying it.
He was there when the fire broke out three years ago, and he even saw Mr. Weaver handle that so-called runaway excavator that night three years later!
"Everyone, shut it! If there's really a ghost, I... I'll..." Bethany aimed his flashlight at a pile of dog crap. "I'll eat every last bit of that!"
But even after saying that, the workers' eyes still showed fear.
The excavator was still moving deeper into the sports complex.
And deep in the sports complex, faint sounds of hundreds of people sobbing could be heard, as if crying and complaining.
Looking around, there seemed to be a faint light floating?
Ghost fire?
Is Rigal Distric Stadium really haunted?
Suddenly, there was a loud noise—it was the excavator!
The excavator had smashed a hole in the back wall of the sports complex!
An explosion followed, with flames shooting into the sky!
Some workers were so scared by the scene that their legs gave out, and they collapsed to the ground.
The electrician who had been scared earlier fainted with his eyes rolled back.
Anyone with common sense would understand that if someone really drove the excavator into the wall, causing it to explode, there would be less than three seconds to escape. Could the driver survive?
Another possibility was more likely: there was no one in the excavator at all!
Bethany was also stunned by the scene, breaking out in a cold sweat!
He quickly took out his phone and called Tyler.
The call connected.
"Mr. Young, something bad has happened! The workers here at the sports complex are all scared out of their wits!"
"What? Say that again?" Tyler's impatient voice came from the other end of the line.
Bethany gritted his teeth and had to recount what had happened that night.
As he spoke, he noticed bizarre shadows emerging from the site of the excavator explosion.
The weirdest part? These shadows were paired up, flipping and tumbling through the air!
They weren't walking like normal people!
"Mr. Young, you better come over. I can't handle this alone!"
With that, he turned to look at the workers behind him, only to meet the burned face of an old man.
The atmosphere instantly froze!
Bethany was so scared that he threw his phone away.
Suddenly, the old man opened his red eyes and stared at him!
Bethany took a step back and shouted, "Everyone, get him!!"
A cold wind blew, but no one responded.
Only then did he realize that all the dozens of workers had fainted on the ground!
Bethany fell to the ground, gulping hard. "Who... who the hell are you? You're messing with the Youngs—you got a death wish or something?"
The old man's mouth opened and closed, emitting a strange laugh.
Bethany was terrified, his face turning pale!
"What... what are you doing?" he screamed.
"It's been three years. I'm back for payback! Don't you remember me? I'm the janitor!" The voice echoed, though the old man's mouth didn't move.
But Bethany was dead sure it was him. He was so terrified, his eyes nearly bugged out of his skull!
Three years ago, the Young family ordered him to torch Rigal District Stadium. But the old gatekeeper caught him red-handed and threatened to turn him in.
Panicking, Bethany grabbed the old man and ripped off half his scalp.
Afraid the guy would spill, he took a knife and shredded his tongue.
Bethany didn't want to kill the old man—but thirty seconds later, he was dead.
Bethany had no choice. He dug a deep hole in the sports complex and buried him.
"No! Don't come any closer!"
Bethany, realizing everything, was now certain that the stadium was haunted.
The old man chuckled, a low, eerie "Heh heh."
Bethany's breathing hitched, his chest tightening.
Three years ago, he'd been the only one caught. Not even the Young family knew about it.
Only him, the sky, the dirt, and the dead guy.
"I was wrong! I was wrong! I'm sorry, please forgive me! Please!" Bethany dropped to his knees, banging his head on the ground. "My kid's just three—she can't grow up without her dad! And back then, it wasn't my call. It was Tyler. If you're looking to settle the score, go after him! Back then, Tyler had his sights set on my pregnant wife. I had no choice but to go along with torching the stadium to keep my family safe!"
As Bethany spoke, he glanced at the pile of dog poop not far away.
His voice choked with sobs. "Please forgive me! I remember what I said earlier! I'll eat it now!"
With that, he scrambled over, grabbed the dog crap, and was about to shove it in his mouth when his eyes rolled back, and he passed out cold!
What the—?
Ryan shook his head, muttering, "Never thought I'd see someone try to pull that stunt."
Then he took out his phone and sent a voice message in the Whatsapp group: "Report, Phase One complete! Also, Clara's perfume works great, love you."
Ryder received the message.
He replied: "Good, all departments, prepare to start Phase Two!"
"Roger!"
"Roger!"
"Roger!"
Ryder yawned and looked at the few "ghosts" in front of him. "Let's go, it's our turn to enter! Our biggest villain is coming."
"Female ghost" Lily nodded. "Okay!"
"Female ghost" Clara grinned. "Let's go!"
"Transgender ghost" Donna smirked, "No problem!"
There were also the "ghost experts" Ryder had encountered at Rigal Distric Stadium: streamer Brandon and four others!
And an older "ghost" Brent!
Just then, Ryder's phone rang.
It was a video call from Sarah!
Ryder thought for a moment and waved to the "ghosts". "You guys go in first, I'll take this call and join you."
Thinking back to the last time he bailed Donna out and ghosted Sarah's call—which landed him in deep crap—he figured he'd better pick up this time.
Clara and the others made an OK gesture and went in through the hole. Only Lily, as she turned to go in, had an unresolvable sadness in her eyes.
Ryder had Rex light him up and answered the call.
Sarah spoke up first, "Emily and I just got to the New York train station. You gonna come get us or what?" Seeing Ryder wasn't responding, she snapped, "Hey, I'm talking to you. You even listening?"
Ryder looked caught off guard. "Wait, you're actually in New York?"
On the other end, Sarah raised her voice. "Shouldn't your first move be to say, 'I'll be right there'?"
"Look, I—" Ryder fumbled, "I'm just stoked, okay? And, you and Emily stay inside the station. It's late—don't wander around. I'll swing by and grab you as soon as I'm done here!"
"What are you busy with so late?"
"It's work! If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now. Things are urgent here!" Ryder said directly.
Sarah nodded. "Alright, alright, go ahead! Be safe on the road!"
"Okay, I'm hanging up."
"Wait a minute!"
Ryder was exasperated. "What now?"
"I was just messing with you. I'm not actually in New York! I was supposed to be, but work blew up, so I'm stuck here for a bit!"
Hearing this, Ryder frowned. "What's going on at work? You need me to step in?"
Sarah shook her head. "No, I've got it handled. Anyway, go do your thing. Bye."
The call ended.
Ryder felt like he'd just dodged a bullet!
Sarah was getting way too good at this.
Just wait till she hits there—he'll show her!
As for this pent-up frustration?
He'd take it out on Tyler later!
