Chapter 356 Companionship!
Ryder nodded indifferently. "Whatever!"
The three of them quickly walked to the entrance!
The bodyguards at the door already knew there would be guests attending the banquet tonight.
After Ryder and the others identified themselves, one of the bodyguards spoke, "Before you go in, we need to do a body search to ensure no weapons like knives are brought inside."
Saying this, another bodyguard took out a detector and checked the three of them.
After confirming they had no weapons, they were allowed in!
Stepping into the gates of Elmrest River Estate, Ryder couldn't help but marvel in his heart, 'It truly lives up to its reputation as the most luxurious residence in Houston.
'The estate's construction, decoration, and garden layout are all a notch above the Platan Height villa!
'Most importantly, it is large enough, almost the size of a small neighborhood!'
Led by a bodyguard, Ryder walked towards the estate's villa.
As he walked, he observed that every thirty feet, a pair of guards stood watch. Each one exuded an air of intimidation, their eyes glinting coldly as they fixed their stares on him.
The lack of courtesy or warmth in their demeanor was striking—clearly, this dinner invitation came with a hint of menace.
Seeing this, Sandra chuckled sarcastically. "Ryder, you sure have connections. Not many in Houston are worthy of being invited to dinner by Mr. Mark!"
"Oh? Really?" Ryder retorted.
Sandra nodded affirmatively. "Of course!"
Ryder, however, didn't believe it. "If I hadn't met you before, I might have thought so. But seeing that even you were invited, it shows this banquet might not be that great. Maybe tonight will be disappointing!"
Hearing this, Sandra's brow furrowed. "Ryder, what do you mean by that? Are you saying I'm not worthy of attending this banquet, or are you embarrassed to be seen with me?"
Ryder bluntly said, "Congratulations, you got it right. I mean both!"
"You..." Sandra’s face reddened with anger, her teeth clenched in frustration.
Sandra was well aware of Ryder’s sharp tongue and recognized that arguing with him would be pointless, so she chose to remain silent!
A few minutes later, the bodyguard led the three to a large room.
"Here is where the banquet will be held tonight. Please wait here for a moment; Mr. Mark will be here shortly!"
After saying this, the bodyguard turned and left!
Ryder glanced around the room, narrowing his eyes slightly!
The room was large and elegantly decorated, but a large portrait of Kenneth at the far end of the room cast an unsettling shadow. The dim lighting only heightened the eerie atmosphere.
To be honest, Ryder was brave enough, but if it were someone with a bit less courage, they might have been scared out of their wits!
Even Sandra didn't expect the banquet to be held in such a place!
She glanced at Kenneth's portrait. For some reason, she always felt as if Kenneth's eyes were staring at her.
Nervously gulping, she quickly turned her head away!
This detail was noticed by Ryder!
He asked with a smile, "You seem a bit nervous. Did you do something guilty?"
"No!" Sandra quickly denied, "Which eye of yours saw me nervous? Don't jump to conclusions and blame everything on me!"
Ryder shrugged. "I just said you were nervous, nothing else. Why are you so agitated?"
"I..."
Sandra realized she had said too much!
She immediately took a deep breath to calm her emotions, then took out her phone and started playing with it, deliberately ignoring Ryder!
Ryder seemed indifferent to all of this!
He had Rex take out his phone and start playing mobile games.
Seeing this, Sandra coldly muttered to herself, "Ignorant kid, how much longer will you stay clueless..."
At this moment, in a certain bedroom of the villa, the atmosphere was somber and quiet.
This was a bedroom unlike any other, filled with medical equipment.
On the bed lay a woman in her sixties, her skin sallow, and most of her hair gone!
She was connected to a breathing machine, the rhythmic hiss of the device filling the silence. Her eyes were closed, giving the impression that she was merely sleeping.
By the bed sat a man, holding her hand, his eyes filled with complex emotions!
This man was Mark!
Mark’s usual stern demeanor softened as he sat by Grace’s bedside, his face etched with a rare tenderness.
Because this woman was his wife, Grace!
Also, she was Kenneth's biological mother!
Back then, Mark had risen from poverty to his current status with Grace's companionship and help!
For this reason, Grace held a unique place in Mark's heart!
Even after Mark gained wealth and status, he still put Grace first and remained deeply in love with her!
But over twenty years ago, Grace suddenly fell seriously ill. Thanks to the enormous efforts and resources, her life was saved in the end!
However, she had become a vegetable, a state from which there was no hope of recovery.
This incident was a heavy blow to Mark.
And Kenneth blamed Mark for it, leading to a rift in their relationship, with Kenneth becoming increasingly rebellious!
In the past twenty years, no matter how busy Mark was, he would always find time to sit by the window and look at Grace, talk to her and wipe her body.
It had become an indispensable habit!
This habit was known to very few because many people thought Grace had died of illness years ago!
At this moment, his eyes were slightly red as he softly spoke, "Grace, thinking back, I have wronged you both the most over the years. I wasn't a good husband or a good father!
"I know you must be resenting me because of Kenneth. Don't worry, when we both pass away, you can deal with me however you want. But before that, I will settle all the scores!"
Saying this, he took a deep breath and stood up!
"Grace, sleep a bit more. I'll come back to talk to you after I finish this."
Turning around, he walked to the door!
Two people stood at the door!
One was the butler, Brian, and the other was Grace's private doctor!
It was this doctor who had been trying to keep Grace alive all these years!
The private doctor softly sighed. "Mr. Davis, your devotion to your wife is truly commendable! But..."
"But what?" Mark asked.
The private doctor said, "But as I mentioned before, Mrs. Davis's internal organs are nearly failing. No matter what medical methods we use, she won't last much longer."
Mark, who had been taking care of Grace every day, was well aware of her condition.
He took a deep breath, his expression hardening with cold resolve. "It's okay. No matter what, I must ensure that before Grace dies, I will kill the murderer to avenge Kenneth! That will be enough!"
After saying this, he walked with Brian towards the room where the banquet was held.
