Chapter 1040 The Wretched Woman

Seated beside Director of Political Education, Lola, was a woman of thirty-eight, two years younger than Alissa, yet her attire conveyed the staleness of a woman in her fifties. Formerly a political science teacher, her excessively rigid and harsh demeanor towards students had once driven a boy to the brink of suicide, resulting in her being reassigned from teaching. Lola’s rise to the position of Director was entirely due to Oliver's patronage.

To repay Oliver’s kindness, Lola fervently executed her duties, zealously enforcing every new policy he instituted, garnering the students' resentment. They privately derided her as Oliver's old henchwoman, eager to follow his every command. Fortunately, her lackluster appearance and corpulent figure spared her from suspicions of having advanced through intimate relations with the principal.

Watching Oliver sip from her cup, Lola smiled warmly, “Mr. Jones, after such a lengthy speech, you must be parched. Feel free to drink more. Today, you must really uplift everyone's spirits.”

Oliver glanced at Lola’s unremarkable, mannish face with a slight revulsion. Like Vanessa, this woman was ambitious but insufferably rigid, which was precisely why he chose Lola for the Director’s role—a position designed to be unpopular. Vanessa, with her cunning, would never accept such a role, and he couldn’t bear to see Audrey take it either. Only prime spots, like the head of the IT office, were reserved for her, yet Audrey inexplicably preferred her job as a regular language teacher. No matter his efforts, he could never win over the proud, buxom teacher, and this frustration left him dispirited.

“Mrs. Lola, I’ve nothing more to say. Do you have any additional points?” Oliver asked, waving his hand dismissively, his earlier enthusiasm waning.

Lola's eyes lit up. She would never forgo an opportunity to showcase herself before the entire faculty. Grabbing the microphone without hesitation, she began, “Dear leaders and colleagues, Mr. Jones’s remarks were enlightening and inspiring, providing our Sunset Valley High School with clear direction for the new term. It is imperative that each of us deeply comprehends Mr. Jones’s spirit and implements it in our daily work, especially those on the teaching frontlines. We must treat the school as our home and work diligently to make Sunset Valley High School a leading educational institution in both Sunset Valley City and Starfall Town. Allow me to add a few more points.”

The audience, restless after sitting for so long, began muttering among themselves. Audrey's brow furrowed lightly, Kimberly smirked coldly, and Vanessa disdainfully murmured, “Just another power play by that old hag.”

“Silence, please,” Lola commanded, her face stern, “Mr. Jones recently emphasized the importance of teacher morality, urging our male teachers to take heed. However, I believe our female teachers must also introspect. I’ve heard students complain about certain female teachers dressed too frivolously, behaving inappropriately with male students outside class. While I won’t name names, you all know who you are. The public’s eyes are sharp. I hope those involved can reform before it’s too late to avoid remorse.”

The teachers began whispering, curious about whom Lola was referring to. Audrey and Kimberly felt uneasy; having recently engaged with Kevin, they naturally felt targeted. Audrey resolved to maintain a distance from Kevin at school to avoid any trouble.

Kimberly, pretending calm, mused that she rarely interacted with Kevin at school, and their liaison had occurred at her home during the summer. Kevin could hardly divulge it, so Lola couldn’t be referring to her—it was a timely reminder, though, of the watchful eyes at school. Her husband, being highly suspicious, would make any rumor a hassle if it reached him.

Vanessa, however, scoffed lightly. Realizing Lola’s words targeted her, she brazenly thrust out her ample chest and crossed her legs, her flawless, alabaster thighs drawing the covetous stares of male teachers, eyes glazed, throats dry, and erections rising.

Lola, seeing Vanessa’s blatant provocation, was livid. In truth, it was Audrey she sought to admonish. Jealous of Audrey’s beauty and figure, Lola resented how every man’s gaze, including Oliver’s, gravitated towards her, especially captivated by Audrey’s heaving, seductive bosom.

A woman like Audrey, lecturing before puberty-stricken boys, seemed more a corrupting temptress than an educator. In a bygone era, such a woman would be deemed a femme fatale destined for grim punishment. Yet, Oliver’s favoritism shielded Audrey from overt harassment, leaving Lola to slander her in whispers. Many of the unsavory rumors about Audrey and Oliver had originated from Lola.

When the school decided to establish an IT office, Lola coveted its head position, feeling it was her just reward. Oliver, however, casually mentioned promoting a promising young female teacher, dashing her hopes—clearly referring to Audrey.

To Lola, Sunset Valley High School was a sovereign domain where Oliver reigned supreme. She saw herself as the prime minister, with other teachers as subjects. Any female teacher nearing Oliver was a threat, one to be methodically suppressed. Although Audrey’s low profile marked her as less overtly ambitious than Vanessa, Lola viewed her as a chief adversary. She hadn’t anticipated Vanessa’s blatant defiance to come first—yet Vanessa too was on her list, for her youth and audacity marked her a rival unworthy of regard.
