"No need, Dad, I'll just grab a bite," Audrey said, noticing how much older Chad looked with his graying hair. It made her sad.
When she and Jason had just started dating, she had visited Birchfield with him during a summer break. During lunch, Audrey watched Caroline's happy family of three, feeling increasingly lonely. Chad noticed but didn't say much, just kept putting food on Audrey's plate.
After lunch, Caroline put her daughter to sleep, and Lucas left to help someone in the village build a house. Audrey stayed with Chad in the living room, chatting.
Suddenly, Chad said, "Audrey, let's go for a walk."

Chad stopped and pondered, "Audrey, what's going on with Jason? Are you hiding something from me? Why doesn't he want to come back for New Year's? Did you two have a fight?"
"No, Dad, we're fine," Audrey quickly shook her head, explaining, "Please don't worry."
"How can I not worry?" Chad sighed heavily. "I know Jason. He's always been ambitious and restless. You two were doing well in Skyview City, then you suddenly moved back to Harmony County. That was already a bit much. You became a high school teacher, and he had a stable job. Both of you were better off than Lucas working in the village. But then he insisted on going to the city. You've only been married a few years, and he's never home, leaving you alone. I feel like slapping some sense into him."
Audrey's pent-up grievances surged, her eyes reddening as she choked up, "Dad, please don't be mad. Jason just wants to earn more money. I understand him. It's not easy for him out there."
"Why are you still defending him?" Chad frowned. "Audrey, you can't let him keep doing this. He's been in the city for years. This can't go on. You're 26 now, right? Thinking this, Chad felt even more troubled. He couldn't help but say, "Audrey, living alone in the city must be lonely. Caroline has moved to the city, too. How about having her stay with you for company? You can look out for each other."

"Yes, Dad, I understand," Audrey said, feeling cornered. She had just gotten a new house and planned to spend time with Kevin. If Caroline moved in, Kevin wouldn't agree. But if she refused, Chad would be more suspicious. She had no choice but to bring up Kevin, "Actually, I'm not living alone. My aunt's child is staying with me."
"What? Your aunt's child?" Chad was surprised. "You have relatives in Harmony County?"
Audrey explained her relationship with Bethany, "My aunt is busy with her business in the city, so she asked Kevin to stay with me. I'm helping him with his studies. Jason met Kevin when he was home and felt reassured knowing Kevin was there."
