Chapter 70 Arch-Enemies

The school had always been pretty laid-back, with lots of students getting into early relationships, and some even ending up pregnant. When Oliver Jones took over as principal, he tried to tighten things up, but it didn't really work. Still, it was almost unheard of for a teacher to get involved with a student. Most students were teenagers, way younger than their teachers, and they usually had a natural fear and respect for them. The bravest boys might go after older students, but none would dare to hit on a teacher.

But Audrey knew Kevin  wasn't your average student. He had the guts to approach her, tell her he liked her, and even smash the principal's office window. Kevin never admitted it, but Audrey was sure the guy she saw on the balcony of the neighboring building the other day was him. If he was bold enough to sleep with a married woman in broad daylight, there was nothing he wouldn't do. Audrey had gotten used to Kevin 's daring ways.

On the other hand, Alissa wasn't the type to take things lightly. She had a solid reputation at school, rarely smiled or joked with male teachers, dressed modestly, and was in her thirties with a son around Kevin 's age. The thought of her having an affair with a student was just mind-blowing to Audrey.

Audrey thought she might be overthinking things, but something still felt off. She had been interacting with Alissa more lately, and Kevin frequently visited Alissa to report on his work. Audrey always felt Kevin looked at her strangely, which she initially chalked up to him having the same inappropriate thoughts as other boys. Now, she suddenly realized that Kevin might have been meeting Alissa for a secret rendezvous, and his looks were because he saw her as an obstacle.

This realization made Audrey's heart race. A woman's intuition told her that something was definitely going on between Alissa and Kevin . A week ago, Audrey might have subtly talked to Alissa to prevent her from making a mistake. But after recent events, Audrey herself had developed an ambiguous relationship with Kevin and could somewhat understand Alissa's situation.

Ignoring the age difference, Kevin was tall, handsome, and had a sunny disposition, plus he was well-endowed. He was an ideal lover. If Audrey hadn't already committed and been unwilling to cheat on her husband, she might have fallen for Kevin like Alissa. Even so, Audrey had developed inappropriate feelings for Kevin . She thought she had resolved her feelings, but discovering Kevin and Alissa's possible involvement made her heart flutter.

Alissa noticed the surprise and suspicion in Audrey's eyes and realized she had lost control of her emotions, which gave her away. Lately, Audrey had been visiting her office often, sometimes to check her breast lumps and other times for teaching advice. Alissa felt lucky Audrey hadn't come earlier, or she would have caught them in the act. But running into her in the hallway was bad enough. Alissa quickly smiled and said, "Mrs. Johnson, where are you headed? I was just about to go to class and lost in thought, and you made me jump."

"Oh, I was downstairs looking for someone and just came back," Audrey replied with a slight smile. She glanced at the silent Kevin , sensing a complex dynamic among the three. Kevin originally had no connection to her; it was through Alissa that she met him. Now, it seemed both she and Alissa had ambiguous relationships with Kevin . Audrey knew Alissa's secret, but Alissa was unaware of her and Kevin 's situation. Audrey decided to test Alissa and casually said, "I wanted to chat with you, but it’s time for class."

Alissa hesitated, then turned to Kevin and said, "Kevin , go to the classroom and distribute the compositions. Tell the class president to review my comments carefully. I'll join you after talking to Mrs. Johnson."

Kevin reluctantly agreed. He wanted to know what Alissa and Audrey would discuss but had no excuse to stay. He slowly walked downstairs with the compositions, ignoring Audrey as he passed her, fearing Alissa might notice something.

On his way, Kevin glanced up at the second floor and saw Alissa and Audrey chatting and laughing at the stairwell. He marveled at how women could be such natural actors and hide their secrets so well. He resolved to be more careful in the future.

Back in the classroom, Kevin handed out the compositions to the group leaders and relayed Alissa's instructions to the class president.

Ivan Simmons, a burly kid, smirked and said, "General, any other commands from the queen? Do I need to bow and thank you?"

The nearby students laughed, finding Ivan's comment amusing.

Ivan's dad was the county's finance director, and Ivan used his family's influence to bully others, forming cliques and declaring himself the boss. He viewed Alissa as a queen ruling behind the scenes and Kevin as a rival, often favored by Alissa. Unable to physically confront Kevin due to his size, Ivan resorted to verbal jabs, mockingly calling Kevin Alissa's general to imply he was her lackey.

Kevin felt a surge of anger, his fists clenching, ready to punch Ivan. But his mother, Bethany Harris, came to mind, so he restrained himself. Last semester, after a fight with Ivan, Kevin received a warning while Ivan remained unscathed. Seeing his mother silently weeping, Kevin knelt before her all night and promised never to fight again.

"What, General? Want a fight? Come on," Ivan taunted, ready for a confrontation. He remembered the beating Kevin had given him and didn't want a repeat, fearing public humiliation.
