Chapter 979: I'm Not Coming
"Hey, bro, what’s going on? Why haven’t you been answering my calls? Lucy and I are already at the bar. Where are you?" The moment Kevin answered, he was met with Albert's complaint amidst the deafening music from the private room.
"Sorry, I fell asleep. I’ll head over right now." Kevin explained sheepishly.
"Unbelievable. Alright, Lucy and I are waiting in the private room. Oh, and bring Laura along." Albert said.
"Got it." Kevin hung up, put on his clothes, and started heading out, calling Laura on the way. After a few rings, Laura answered in a cold tone, asking what he wanted.
"Hey, Albert and Lucy are having a party at the bar. They’re already there. Wanna join us?" Kevin asked.
"Sorry, Kevin, I have to practice my violin tonight. You go ahead without me." Laura said coolly and hung up quickly.
Holding his phone, Kevin felt a pang of unease at Laura’s sudden coldness. He wondered why she was acting this way. Was she trying to avoid the four-person party, or did she genuinely have something important?
Kevin suddenly recalled the uncomfortable scene that afternoon in the upscale residential area with Laura, Daisy, Maurice, and Fiona. Maurice had posed a tricky question to him, and in trying not to offend either Maurice or Fiona, he had avoided giving a direct answer. To Laura, his hesitation might have seemed like disinterest. Could she really be upset about that?
Kevin hastily called Laura again to explain, but she didn’t pick up. Frustrated, Kevin realized he might have indeed done something wrong. Girls were often sensitive, and Laura might be feeling insecure, especially with Fiona around, an impressive girl in her own right. Dating really is troublesome, he thought.
For now, Kevin had to go to the bar and try to sort things out with Laura later when she had calmed down.
Kevin arrived at the bar to find Albert and Lucy singing a duet in the private room, looking deeply into each other’s eyes, exuding sweetness that made Kevin feel a bit jealous.
"Kevin, why'd you come alone? Where’s Laura?" Albert stood up, handing Kevin a can of beer, curious.
"Oh, Laura has to practice her violin tonight. She couldn’t make it. She asked me to pass on the message." Kevin repeated the excuse Laura had given.
Albert didn’t mind, waving Kevin to the song selector while he continued his enthusiastic, if off-key, singing with Lucy. He seemed in high spirits, though it was unclear if it was due to progress with Lucy.
Kevin was absentmindedly scrolling through songs when he felt someone move closer. Turning, he saw it was Lucy, looking stunning in a light yellow dress that highlighted her ample bosom and hinted at a cleavage unable to be ignored. He wondered if Albert had managed to score yet.
"Kevin, are you and Laura having a fight?" Lucy asked quietly.
"No, not at all." Kevin quickly denied, caught off guard by Lucy’s perceptiveness. She was definitely more mature and insightful than Laura.
"Come on, don’t lie to me." Lucy smiled, her big eyes sparkling playfully. "I called Laura earlier. Her tone was different; she sounded upset. Also, practicing violin isn’t a real reason. She could take some time out. You must have upset her."
"You might as well become Sherlock Holmes," Kevin muttered, seeing Lucy’s determined look, sighed, "I swear, I didn’t do anything wrong. She must have misunderstood me."
"You two, come on, sing with us. Quit the chitchat!" Albert called, interrupting from across the room.
"Alright, I won’t meddle in your affairs anymore. But Laura’s my best friend and a good girl. If you don’t like her, just don’t hurt her. Or else you’ll have to answer to me." Lucy shot Kevin a glare before joining Albert with the microphone.
Kevin gave a wry smile, reflecting on how he involuntarily became Laura's boyfriend, partly because of Daisy’s insistence. Now, he was stuck in an awkward situation. He didn’t have strong feelings for Laura, though she was definitely a good person. But his life was filled with other women, from the alluring Audrey to the passionate Grace, from the sultry Natalie to others like Alissa, Evelyn, Vanessa, and Kimberly. Each fulfilled his fantasies in different ways, making Laura seem less impactful.
Perhaps he should clarify things with Daisy. Being with Laura just stressed them both. Feeling overwhelmed, Kevin glanced at Albert, who seemed hesitant yet eager to hold Lucy’s hand. Deciding he didn’t want to be a third wheel, he excused himself to the restroom but didn’t really want to go home. Looking for someone to talk to, he unsuccessfully tried calling his cousin and then decided to head to Natalie’s office.
