Chapter 1191
"Hey Mark, got some good news for you. I nabbed a bad guy, might be City Lecher. Get over here quick," Kevin said with a grin. "If you take too long, I'll have to haul him to the station myself."
"Where are you? I'll bring the team right now," Mark's ears perked up at the mention of City Lecher. "Give me ten minutes—no, make that five. I'm on my way."
Kevin barely had to wait three minutes before Mark showed up with a dozen detectives in tow. Seeing the short guy pinned under Kevin, Mark was ecstatic. He had the team toss the guy into the squad car and clapped Kevin on the shoulder, saying, "Kevin, you're my lucky charm. If this guy's City Lecher, drinks are on me for a month. Gotta run now."
Kevin was riding high too. It was a great day—he'd hooked up with Willow and caught City Lecher, taking a big threat off Audrey's back. If that creep had ever broken into Audrey's place, he'd have regretted it big time.
Kevin walked into the yard and noticed the bedroom light was on. Feeling playful, he decided to mess with Audrey a bit. He tiptoed to the bedroom window and peeked inside. Audrey was at her computer in a nightgown, typing away. Kevin gently tapped on the glass.
"Who's there?" Audrey's voice came from the bedroom, a bit shaky.
Kevin chuckled to himself but stayed quiet. When Audrey went back to typing, he tapped the glass a few more times and let out some spooky laughs.
"Who's out there? Show yourself, or I'm calling the cops," Audrey said, her voice trembling as she backed away, clearly scared.
Seeing her so freaked out, Kevin decided to cut the joke short. He quickly called out, "Audrey, it's me."
The room went silent. Feeling a bit nervous, Kevin rushed inside and saw Audrey staring at him, eyes wide. He quickly smiled and said, "Audrey, don't be mad. I was just messing around."
"You jerk! Why'd you scare me like that?" Audrey said, hitting Kevin's chest with her fists, tears in her eyes. "I was terrified. Do you know how scared I get being home alone? And you pull this stunt?"
With that, tears streamed down her face.
Ever since the City Lecher incident, Audrey had been on edge. Even though the guy hadn't shown up again, she still had nightmares. They'd gotten less frequent over time, but Kevin's prank brought all those bad memories rushing back, throwing her right back into that nightmare.
Seeing her cry, Kevin quickly hugged her and wiped her tears, saying, "Audrey, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. Please don't cry. It's all my fault. You can hit me some more if you want. I promise I won't do it again. You can punish me however you like."
"You said you went to the city to find Bethany and were gone all day without even a phone call. I waited for you the whole day. I haven't even had dinner yet, and you ate without asking if I had eaten. Then you come back and scare me. Do you even care about me?" Audrey said, looking up with tearful eyes.
Seeing Audrey cry, Kevin felt deeply guilty. He cursed himself for being a jerk. He had once said Jason was bad, but he left the charming Audrey to spend a cozy day with Willow. The more he thought about it, the more he felt ashamed. He slapped himself hard on the face, making one side of his face swell up.
"What are you doing?" Audrey quickly grabbed Kevin's hand, feeling a bit distressed. "There's no need to hit yourself so hard."
"Audrey, it's my fault. I didn't realize you were waiting for me," Kevin said, choking up as he held Audrey's hand. "What do you want to eat? I'll go get it for you now."
"No need, it's so late," Audrey shook her head and gave Kevin a sidelong glance, pouting. "I'm too upset to eat anything. You've been out all day and must be tired. Go take a bath first."
Seeing that Audrey still cared about him, Kevin felt even more ashamed. He thought he couldn't let Audrey be sad anymore. They had finally gotten a few days of sweet life together; he couldn't ruin it. He hugged Audrey's soft, voluptuous body and whispered in her ear, "Audrey, I won't go anywhere tomorrow. I'll stay home with you. Whatever you want me to do, I'll do it, okay?"
"Okay, I wanted to go to the beauty salon tomorrow. Come with me," Audrey said.
"Sure," Kevin agreed without hesitation.
Just then, Kevin's phone rang. He took it out and saw it was Laura calling. He suddenly remembered he had plans to go hiking with Laura tomorrow and looked at Audrey awkwardly.
"It's Laura, isn't it?" Audrey saw the name on Kevin's phone screen and smiled. "Go ahead and answer it. I'll go back to writing." She swayed her hips as she walked to the computer desk, sat down, and continued typing.
Feeling guilty, Kevin quickly went to the living room to answer Laura's call.
"Kevin, when are we leaving tomorrow?" Laura said cheerfully, "You don't know, but I went shopping with my mom this afternoon and bought a ton of snacks and drinks. You'll have to carry the backpack tomorrow."
"Okay," Kevin wanted to cancel the hiking plans, but hearing Laura's excited tone, he couldn't bring himself to say it. He felt torn. On one hand, Audrey was affectionate, and on the other, Laura was pure and lovely. Hurting either one seemed wrong.
