Chapter 707: Daisy's Unfulfilled Desires
At noon, Kevin got back home and shared his exam results with his mother. Bethany heard that her son ranked third in the class and was so happy that tears welled up in her eyes.
"Mom, what's up with you?" Kevin was a bit puzzled. "Why are you crying? I did my best. I just couldn't get first place."
"Silly boy, Mom is just happy," Bethany wiped away her tears and said, "I don't mind going through hardships as long as you study well and get into a good college. That's all I need."
"Mom, don't worry, I'll make sure to get the job done," Kevin reassured, feeling confident about his chances of getting into college.
"Oh, by the way, since Mrs. Garcia cares so much about you, when do you guys have a break?" Bethany asked. "I'd like to invite Mrs. Garcia over for dinner one of these days."
"I think we'll be off in the afternoon," Kevin pondered, then suddenly remembered he was meeting Audrey in the evening. He quickly added, "Mom, I'm meeting up with some classmates tonight, so I might be back late."
"Sure, you've been working hard lately. It's good to relax a bit," Bethany replied readily. She was now confident in Kevin and didn't want to restrict his plans too much, especially since she was very satisfied with his recent results.
Kevin was thrilled to hear this. It seemed like he could finally have a great time with Audrey tonight, a moment he had been looking forward to for a long time.
Meanwhile, at Laura's house, Daisy set a steaming plate of food on the table and called out to Oliver, who was reading in the study, "Honey, dinner's ready. Laura, stop practicing the piano and come wash up for dinner."
"Alright, coming," Laura replied, walking over to the table. She looked at the spread of dishes, took a deep breath, and exclaimed excitedly, "Mom, you're the best! These are all my favorite dishes."
"I just wanted to treat my precious daughter," Daisy said with a proud smile. "Your dad is the school principal, and you being the top of your grade is a big help to him. Otherwise, others won't respect him as the principal."
"What are you two whispering about?" Oliver, with a slightly bulging belly, walked over, chuckling. "Laura, you did well this time. Mrs. Garcia has already told me that you've improved from last semester. Keep it up. My daughter must be the first in class."
"Come on, when have you ever cared about Laura's studies? You're never home," Daisy huffed, "I'm the one managing everything. Now that Laura has good grades, you want to take credit. Shameless."
"Alright, alright, my hardworking wife has made a huge contribution to our family. I can't thank you enough," Oliver poured a glass of wine and raised it to Daisy. "Cheers to you, my forever young and beautiful wife."
"Even the prestigious school principal is so cheeky. How embarrassing," Daisy rolled her eyes at Oliver, clinking her glass with his, teasingly saying, "By the way, since you're usually too busy to spend time with Laura, now that it's summer break, you should take her out. You can't just leave all the parenting to me. If Laura ends up not bonding with you, don't blame me for not warning you."
"I'll try to make time," Oliver said helplessly, glancing at his wife. "Even during summer break, as a principal, I can't just relax. There are various training sessions, meetings, and I have to oversee the school staff apartments. If I'm not on top of things, problems can arise."
"You can't delegate some of these tasks to others?" Daisy complained, her beautiful eyes showing a hint of annoyance. "Your school has so many vice principals. They can't just collect a paycheck without doing any work. Even if you're capable, the school isn't just about you."
"Alright, you don't understand the complexities of my work," Oliver furrowed his brow. "School matters are not that simple. Those vice principals have their own connections, and some things I can't just hand off to them, or it'll cause trouble for me."
"I couldn't care less about your school affairs," Daisy served her daughter a piece of braised prawn, then suddenly remembered something and asked, "By the way, is there a female teacher named Audrey at your school?"
Oliver, in the middle of picking up a spare rib, heard his wife's question. His chopsticks trembled, causing the rib to fall on the table. He calmly picked it up and put it in his bowl, quickly pondering his wife's intentions. He casually replied, "I think there is. I can't quite remember. There are so many teachers at the school. Why do you ask? Do you know her?"
Daisy smiled faintly and said, "There's a student in Laura's class named Kevin, and Audrey is his cousin. I bumped into them the other day when I dropped Laura off at school. I chatted with Audrey, and she seems like a nice teacher. What do you think?"
"Yeah, she seems alright," Oliver replied vaguely, not wanting to delve into the topic further. He turned to his daughter and asked, "Laura, any plans for the summer break?"
