Chapter 1074 A Drastic Change in Attitude

Kevin entered the English teaching room excitedly and found Audrey grading papers at her desk. Since other teachers had already left, he walked over and placed his report card on the table, grinning as he said, "Sis, take a look. I'm third in the class and ninth in the grade. How's that? I delivered on my promise."

However, Audrey didn't acknowledge Kevin and continued focusing on grading. Kevin felt awkward and suddenly remembered that Audrey had previously forbidden him from coming to her office and calling her "Sis." Could Audrey be upset about this? He quickly walked to the door and knocked, announcing, "Permission to enter."

"Come in," Audrey responded coldly.

"Mrs. Johnson, here's my report card for you to see," Kevin, having learned from his past mistakes, handed the report card to Audrey politely with both hands, hoping that she wouldn't find any faults this time.

Audrey glanced at Kevin's report card calmly and remarked, "It's good. You can go home now. Give Auntie a call, and also inform Mrs. Garcia. Let them celebrate. I have things to do, so you don't need to wait for me."

Kevin hesitated, feeling Audrey's sudden coldness. They had been chatting happily at lunchtime. Tentatively, he said, "Mrs. Johnson, I'll wait for you a bit."

"No need," Audrey replied, looking at Kevin. Remembering Quentin's words from earlier, she felt a pang in her heart. She couldn't tolerate betrayal, especially from Kevin. Though he wasn't her husband, Jason, she still felt a sense of betrayal. "Kevin, go home. Don't come to my office anymore. Do you understand?"

"Alright, Mrs. Johnson," Kevin said with resignation, moving towards the door. As he reached the threshold, he turned back hesitantly, saying, "Mrs. Johnson, I'll be waiting for you at home then."

"No need. I won't be going home tonight," Audrey took a deep breath and continued, "Kevin, now that your grades have improved, you no longer need my tutoring. I won't be coming over to your house in the future. Look after yourself."

Kevin's heart sank. He knew Audrey's temper well—her casual tone indicated her true frustration. Despite his excellent performance on the test and diligent efforts in recent days, apart from a moment of intimacy at lunchtime, Audrey didn't show strong resistance then. Was Audrey now holding him accountable for that brief indulgence? Was all of this just a ploy to push him to excel in his studies, only to be cut off afterward?

"Sis, what's happening? What did I do wrong?" Kevin couldn't help but ask. He needed clarity; he didn't want to engage in a cold war with his sister.

"Kevin, you didn't do anything wrong. It's my fault," Audrey sighed, a sense of loneliness evident on her face. "We shouldn't have done this. The past is behind us, and moving forward, you are you, and I am me. I don't want to disappoint Auntie, betray my husband, or compromise my role as a teacher. Go on, don't come looking for me anymore."

"Sis..." Hearing Audrey's cold tone, Kevin felt thunderstruck. He never expected Audrey to want to break up with him. He walked quickly to her, looking crestfallen, "What have I done wrong? You promised to grant any request if I did well on this test. I did, and now you're changing your mind. Were you deceiving me all along? Do you know how hard these past days have been for me? I did everything to make you happy. In my heart, Sis, you are the most important person. Do you know that?"

Previously, Audrey would have been touched by Kevin's heartfelt confession, but now, all she could see were images of Kevin and Natalie together. She even found the scenario repulsive. Disgusted, she said, "Kevin, you are studying for yourself, not for anyone else. If you're studying for me, I'm sorry, I can't bear that responsibility. In fact, I don't want to bear it. Without me, would you stop schooling?"

Kevin was struck speechless, unsure how to respond.

With a deep breath, Audrey spoke slowly, "And I detest dishonesty the most. Kevin, I remember warning you about getting close to Natalie. Have you adhered to that?"

"Oh, I haven't," Kevin stammered, subconsciously responding, "Sis, I've been with you all this time. How could I find the time to meet anyone else, let alone Natalie? It slipped my mind completely until you mentioned her."

"Have you really not seen her?" Audrey gazed at Kevin earnestly. She still hoped that all of this was Quentin's machination, and she was even prepared to accept it if Kevin admitted to meeting Natalie. She didn't want Kevin to lie to her.

Silence filled the office. Kevin's mind raced wildly. He couldn't bring himself to tell Audrey about his visit to the lake with Natalie. Yet, he couldn't fabricate a story either. Would he admit to spending the entire day at the lake, renting a room with Natalie, and even involving Jasper? He was reluctant to reveal this to Audrey. Finally, he gritted his teeth and lied, "Honestly, I haven't, Sis."

Watching Kevin maintain a poker face while lying, Audrey's heart sank. She thought she knew Kevin well, believed that even if the whole world betrayed her, Kevin wouldn't. Yet, she felt disappointed. "Fine," Audrey sighed softly. At this point, she didn't want to continue with the facade. "Hand me your phone."

"Sis, why do you need my phone?" Kevin inquired.

"Just pass it over. Do you have some secrets you're afraid I'll discover?" Audrey extended her hand. She didn't want to dive into Kevin's phone if it wasn't absolutely necessary. That would mean there was no trust left between them, a fragile entity once broken, impossible to repair to its original state.
