Chapter 992: An Interesting Game
Suddenly, the sound of a splash and a woman’s scream echoed through the cabin. Kevin instinctively opened his eyes to see a young boy struggling in the lake—Paul. The young couple leaned over the railing, shouting frantically, the woman desperate to jump in but restrained by the man, who was shouting for someone who could swim.
Seeing Paul slowly sinking, Kevin knew there was no time to waste. Without a second thought, he leapt over the railing into the icy water. The cold quickly soaked his clothes, dragging him under. Though a decent swimmer, Kevin had only ever swum in pools before; the lake was much deeper and more treacherous. He struggled to maintain his balance and swam toward Paul, grabbing his arm.
At that moment, the captain found a lifebuoy and threw it down. Kevin grasped it with one hand while holding onto Paul with the other, and the people on the boat quickly hauled them both up.
Kevin’s lips turned purple, his entire body shivering, and his legs cramping. If he had been any later, he might not have made it. Natalie, feeling distressed, scolded softly, "Kevin, are you crazy? There were so many people on the boat; you could have let someone else go. What if something happened to you? How would I explain it to your mother?"
"I didn’t think that far," Kevin replied, teeth chattering, feeling his manhood nearly disappear from the cold. In hindsight, he realized how reckless he had been; he might not have saved Paul and could have jeopardized his own life.
"Oh, you," Natalie sighed, seeing Kevin’s face blue from the cold. She quickly helped him take off his wet T-shirt, wrung it out, and laid it over the railing to dry. She handed him her sun-protection jacket and embraced him, using her body heat to warm him, feeling unexpectedly moved.
Over the years, Natalie had become cynical from her experiences in the world of vice, always prioritizing interests over emotions. Even with Kevin, she had been more utilitarian. But seeing him dive into the lake without hesitation to save someone gave her a new perspective on the boy. If she were ever in a dire situation, she doubted anyone but Kevin, with his genuine simplicity, would help her without a second thought.
Cradled against Natalie’s warm, voluptuous body and basking in the sunlight, Kevin soon felt warmth returning, his complexion normalizing. Having narrowly escaped death, he murmured, wondering if he was somehow destined to owe this kid something.
After a while, the young couple approached, holding their son. The man spoke gratefully, "Young man, thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, Paul might not have survived."
The long-haired woman, pale and teary-eyed, choked out, "Thank you. Paul is so mischievous. He tried to catch a fish, and when I stopped him, he sneaked out of his life jacket and slipped through the railing. The captain said the water here is very deep and cold, and even skilled swimmers avoid it. Without you, Paul…." She broke down in tears, sobbing uncontrollably.
Kevin quickly reassured them. The man introduced himself as Douglas, head of credit at Starfall Town’s commercial bank, and his wife Isabel, a renowned local artist and high school art teacher. They had brought their son Paul to the lake, never expecting such a close call.
"Young man, you’ve earned our eternal gratitude. If you ever visit Starfall Town, don’t hesitate to call me." Douglas handed Kevin a business card, then glanced at Natalie hesitantly, asking, "And this is…?"
"Oh, I’m Kevin’s cousin. With school about to start, I'm taking him out to relax. This kid has always been kind-hearted, winning school honors every year. It must be fate that brought him and Paul together today." Natalie smiled charmingly, hugging Kevin without a care that they wouldn't recognize her true identity.
"Fate… yes, indeed," Isabel murmured, holding her son. She had sensed something odd about the two at the slide, Natalie's mature allure contrasting sharply with Kevin’s youthful innocence. Their behavior didn’t fit the usual couple dynamics. Now, hearing that Natalie was his cousin, she felt relieved, attributing their closeness to sibling fondness, especially after Kevin’s heroic act.
The boat resumed its journey, and after a short while, they reached an island in the lake known as Turtle Island, named for its turtle-like shape as seen from above. Renovated as part of the resort, it had become a popular tourist spot.
As the boat docked, everyone disembarked, eager to explore. Isabel, shaken by the near tragedy, insisted on taking her son to the island’s chapel to pray. Natalie, unimpressed by the chapel, led Kevin hand in hand to explore the less crowded, secluded parts of the island.
The island featured low hills covered in dense vegetation due to years of sparse human activity. Walking along a forest path, the sounds of other tourists gradually faded, leaving only the rustling of leaves in the wind, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
Continuing forward, the path opened into a hidden, idyllic clearing with unique rock formations, flowing streams, and dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. A large swing hung from a massive tree. Delighted, Natalie posed for numerous photos that Kevin took. Finding it insufficiently exciting, she lifted her skirt to reveal her stocking-clad legs, pulling the stockings down to her knees and bending over, asking Kevin to take several more provocative shots.
