Chapter 889: What Is His Identity?
"Oh, what problem?" Armando was a bit surprised. He had asked Kevin to read the article on a whim and didn't really expect him to find any issues. But it seemed this young man was not holding back.
"It's the last paragraph. I think the ending is too bland and lacks impact," Kevin pointed out. "Our Mrs. Garcia always says that a good article should have a strong beginning, a substantial middle, and a powerful ending. Your conclusion is too plain. If you change it to a series of parallel sentences, it would be much more effective."
Armando pondered for a moment and nodded. This was just a first draft, meant to outline the main points. He hadn't polished it yet, and the ending was indeed a bit rushed. Now he looked at Kevin with newfound respect and said with a smile, "Well done, Kevin. You're almost as good as our department head. What do you think, dear?"
"I think Kevin is quite impressive," Maurice laughed. "Let's see if you'll still dare to show your drafts to others so casually. Aren't you afraid of embarrassing yourself?"
Kevin felt a bit embarrassed. His essay writing skills were still at a high school level and couldn't possibly compare to the insights of a deputy county chief.
Just then, Maurice suddenly frowned, clutching her chest, her face turning pale. She said to Armando, "Honey, I'm not feeling well. Help me to the sofa."
Armando was startled and quickly supported Maurice towards the sofa, with Kevin helping as well. But before they could reach it, Maurice's body went limp and she started to slide to the floor.
"Honey, what's wrong?" Armando was alarmed and tried to pull her up, but a pain in his back prevented him from exerting much force.
"Uncle, we need to get Aunt to the hospital immediately," Kevin suggested.
"Yes, I'll call an ambulance right away," Armando said, reaching for his phone. But the hospital was some distance away, and waiting for an ambulance could take too long. He was anxious, watching his wife lying motionless on the floor, her face turning blue.
Kevin gritted his teeth and said, "Uncle, we can't wait. I'll carry Aunt to the hospital."
He bent down, lifted Maurice onto his back, and with Armando's help, secured her in place. Despite Maurice's petite stature, she was quite heavy due to her plump figure. Carrying her was a challenge, even for an adult, let alone a high school student.
"Kevin, are you sure you can do this? Don't overexert yourself," Armando asked, concerned for both his wife and Kevin.
"Don't worry, Uncle. I'll be fine," Kevin reassured him. He adjusted Maurice's position and started walking quickly towards the exit of the residential area, his pace soon turning into a jog. Armando struggled to keep up.
Normally, it would take at least Eighteen minutes to walk from the residential area to the county hospital. But Kevin, jogging with Maurice on his back, made it in under ten minutes. The ambulance had just arrived when they got there. The doctors and nurses hurriedly transferred Maurice onto a stretcher and rushed her to the emergency room.
Kevin, drenched in sweat and with legs trembling, collapsed onto the ground, panting heavily. After a while, Armando arrived, saw Kevin on the ground, and approached him. "Kevin, are you alright?"
"I'm... I'm fine," Kevin replied, still catching his breath. "Uncle, don't worry about me. Go check on Aunt. The doctors just took her to the emergency room."
Armando, worried about his wife, headed towards the emergency room. Kevin rested for a bit, then got up and entered the hospital. He saw a group of doctors in white coats around Armando, explaining Maurice's condition. Maurice had suffered a sudden heart attack, and had she been brought in a few minutes later, it could have been fatal. Thanks to the timely intervention, she was now out of danger.
Hearing this, Kevin felt a wave of relief. His legs were still shaking, so he found a chair to sit down and rest. Soon, several cars arrived at the hospital entrance. A few middle-aged men hurried into the emergency room, rushing over to Armando. "Sir, how is your wife? We just got the news."
"Who told you to come here?" Armando saw that they were all heads of departments he oversaw, led by the finance director Devon, followed by the heads of the water conservancy, poverty alleviation, urban construction, and power departments. He frowned and said sternly, "This is ridiculous. Go back!"
The men looked at each other, not expecting Armando to be so ungrateful. Devon forced a smile and said, "Sir, we meant well. You've always taken care of us, and we couldn't just stand by."
"Enough. Do your jobs well, that's more important than anything else," Armando said, shaking his head. He didn't want to be too harsh. "You're all department heads. Coming to visit a housewife in the middle of the night will make the people here think I'm corrupt. You're putting me in a difficult position."
The men shivered. Armando's words were serious. Devon, dejected, said, "Sir, it's my fault. I didn't think it through. I apologize."
"No need to apologize. Just go back to where you came from and keep this quiet," Armando said coldly. The men had no choice but to leave. As they walked out, one of them noticed Kevin and said, "Kevin, what are you doing here?"
Kevin looked up and saw that it was Albert's father, Barrett. He stood up and said, "Mr. Barrett, I brought Mrs. Maurice to the hospital."
"What? You brought the leader's wife here?" Barrett was shocked. The others also looked surprised, wondering about Kevin's relationship with Armando.
Kevin didn't have a good impression of Barrett and was too tired to talk. Barrett didn't press further and left with the others.
Devon approached Barrett and asked, "Avery, is that kid a relative of the leader? I've never seen him before."
Barrett shook his head. "I don't think so. Harold, you're the leader's confidant. You'd know if he had any relatives. That kid's name is Kevin. He's in the same class as my son. Oh, I remember he fought with your son last semester. Don't you remember?"
"I do now," Devon nodded. No wonder Kevin dared to fight his son. It seemed he had connections with the leader. He decided to tell his son to be more careful. But the situation at the hospital was tricky. The leader cared about his reputation, but they couldn't just do nothing.
Barrett came up with an idea. "Harold, since the leader thinks our presence here is inappropriate, we can send our wives instead. Women talking together would be more discreet, and the leader wouldn't mind."
"Good idea, Avery. I'll have my wife visit tomorrow," Devon agreed. A group of men visiting the hospital was indeed too conspicuous. Sending their wives would be more discreet and help build a good relationship with Maurice.
Barrett felt a bit regretful. His wife Evelyn was on vacation with their son in the Maldives and wouldn't be back for a few days, missing the opportunity to get close to Maurice.
He glanced back at the hospital, thinking about what Kevin had said. He found the boy increasingly enigmatic. Kevin's presence at the hospital suggested a close relationship with Armando, and Barrett realized he needed to change his attitude towards him.
...
Outside the emergency room, Armando, having sent Devon and the others away, sat beside Kevin and said gratefully, "Kevin, thank you so much tonight. If it weren't for you, Fiona's mother might have been in real danger. You are my savior."
Armando's gratitude was genuine. He and Maurice had a deep bond, and he couldn't bear the thought of losing her. Kevin had not only saved Maurice's life but also his political career. He couldn't thank Kevin enough.
"Uncle, please don't say that. Mrs. Maurice is a good person and would have been fine without me," Kevin said, scratching his head uncomfortably. "Uncle, now that Mrs. Maurice is okay, I should head home."
"Alright, I'll walk you out," Armando said, feeling a sense of admiration for Kevin. The young man's decisiveness and ability to carry Maurice to the hospital were impressive. If Kevin were one of his subordinates, he would definitely nurture him. But Kevin was just a high school student.
At the hospital entrance, Armando patted Kevin's shoulder and said, "Kevin, I won't say more. When your aunt recovers, you must come to our house as a guest."
"Sure, Uncle," Kevin replied, shaking Armando's hand. Regardless of Maurice's status, he would have helped anyone in need. Saving a life was always worthwhile.
Meanwhile, a black Audi was speeding towards the hospital. In the passenger seat was office director Jordan, and the driver was Kimberly's husband, Grant. Jordan had just learned that Armando's wife was at the hospital and had brought Grant along.
Grant was excited. He had been monitoring his wife and Kevin from the office, but now he saw an opportunity to make a good impression on Armando.
As the Audi approached the hospital, Grant saw Armando talking to someone at the entrance. He quickly hit the brakes and realized it was Kevin. Armando had his hand on Kevin's shoulder, smiling warmly.
So Kevin had a close relationship with Armando. Grant was even more excited. He had been hesitant about letting his wife continue tutoring Kevin, but now he was determined. He would even allow Kevin to take some liberties if it meant securing this valuable connection.
