I rushed back to surprise you, but you don't even seem to care."
"That's not the point," Audrey snapped, her accumulated frustrations erupting. "If you cared about me, how could you leave me alone for a week? I traveled all this way to see you, and this is how you treat me?"
Lucas was at a loss for words. Remembering his fling from the previous night, he felt even guiltier. He quickly stood up, trying to make amends. "I'm sorry, honey. It's my fault. Work has been crazy, and the boss needed me. But I took time off, and tomorrow I'll take you around the city. We can't let your trip to Starhaven be in vain."
"I don't have time," Audrey retorted. "I have classes to teach tomorrow. I can't go."
Lucas remembered his wife's tutoring business but hadn't asked much about it, thinking it was good for her to stay busy. Now curious, he asked, "How's the tutoring business going? How many students do you have? How much are you making?"
Audrey held up two fingers, teasingly. "Guess."
"Two thousand?" Lucas guessed, surprised. "That's great! You've made two thousand in just a week. If you keep this up, you'll make eight thousand a month. Is tutoring really that profitable?"
"Not two thousand, but twenty thousand," Audrey said with a smile. "After deducting the costs of renting the classroom and other expenses, I've made a net profit of twenty thousand."
"What? Twenty thousand? You must be joking," Lucas said, his mouth agape. "Honey, did you really make twenty thousand?"
"Of course. When have I ever lied to you?" Audrey replied, smiling. "If you don't believe me, I'll show you my phone. I have all the transactions recorded."
Seeing the records on Audrey's phone, Lucas was convinced. He swallowed hard. "Honey, you're amazing. If the tutoring business is this profitable, why hesitate? Quit your school job. You run the tutoring business, I'll do my job, and together we can make at least three hundred thousand a year. We could settle down in Starhaven. What do you think?"
Audrey had anticipated this reaction. She sighed. "Lucas, it's not that simple. I just got lucky. This area is full of residents who were relocated, and the community is new. The big tutoring centers haven't moved in yet, and the small ones can't compete. This is just a temporary gap. After this summer, the street will be full of tutoring centers, and I won't be able to compete. Making money won't be that easy."
