Chapter 146 Why Did You Propose?

Fiona Harris was floored by Kevin 's move. Since high school started, no one had the guts to use such a cheesy way to confess to her, or even confess at all. And here was this high school kid, proposing on her birthday with a can tab. Was he nuts? Did he think their brief chat meant she was into him?

With a smirk, Fiona settled back on the sofa, waiting for Kevin 's confession. She was ready to crush his hopes, to show him that while princes might fall for Cinderella, princesses don't marry paupers.

But then, Kevin said his piece and turned to leave without waiting for her response. Fiona, who had a snarky comeback all lined up, was left speechless, her face turning red with frustration. She almost called out for an explanation but stopped herself, feeling humiliated. It had been ages since someone made her feel this dumb.

Kevin had thought about explaining himself to Fiona but worried she'd think he was mocking her. He figured it was better to let her think he was confessing. Worst case, she'd think he was a fool and laugh behind his back. As he reached the door, someone walked in, almost bumping into him. The newcomer frowned and blocked his way, asking, "Kevin , what are you doing here?"
The guy blocking Kevin was Ivan Simmons, all decked out in a suit, shiny shoes, and holding a bouquet of roses. Kevin remembered Albert mentioning Ivan was after Fiona. Was Ivan planning to confess tonight, or did he set up this whole birthday bash for her?

This was bad news. Kevin had zero interest in getting tangled up in rich kids' love triangles. He tried to slip past Ivan, but a bunch of seven or eight guys with balloons, horns, and glow sticks crowded in, blocking his way. Kevin was stuck.

A long-haired girl next to Fiona giggled, "Ivan, you missed a real show. This guy just proposed to Fiona. Isn't that hilarious?"

A girl with big eyes, sensing Ivan's anger, quickly said, "It's just a misunderstanding. Kevin , right? Explain to Fiona. This isn't a joke."

Seeing things were getting out of hand, Kevin explained everything. Ivan's expression softened a bit, but he had been itching for a reason to mess with Kevin . Smirking, he said, "You call that a misunderstanding? I think you were here to stir up trouble. Fiona, what do you think we should do?"

Realizing Kevin was just playing a dare, Fiona got even more annoyed. No one had ever dared to joke with her like this. Smiling faintly, she said, "Since Ivan organized the party, I'll leave it to you."
Clearly, she wanted Ivan to give Kevin a hard time.

Taking Fiona's hint, Ivan said, "Kevin , we're classmates, so I won't be too harsh. Since it's Fiona's birthday, we all brought gifts. You should too, or..." He pointed to a crate of beer in the corner, "Drink all those beers. Not a drop left."

Kevin saw over twenty bottles. He couldn't drink that much even if it were water. Resigned, he asked, "What should I do?"

"Easy. We'll show you," Ivan said, pulling a small box from his pocket and presenting it to Fiona. "Fiona, happy sixteenth birthday. I bought this in Hong Kong last week. I hope you stay young and happy forever."

He opened the box, revealing a jade bracelet inside, clearly expensive.

Fiona slipped it onto her wrist, nodding in surprise. "Ivan, how did you know I wanted this style?"

She turned to the long-haired girl, frowning, "Did you tell him?"

The girl, startled, quickly denied it, "I didn't! Ask Ivan."

"Fiona, don't blame her," Ivan said, smiling. "I asked your mom."

A tinge of resignation flickered across her face. Steeped in her father's ideology, she found her classmates, including Ivan, immature. Yet, Ivan's father was her father's confidant, and her mother encouraged their match, much to her annoyance. She had been trying to gently discourage Ivan, hoping he'd understand and back off.
The other boys started presenting their gifts—MP3 players, perfume, concert tickets—all worth a few thousand bucks each. Ivan's jade bracelet was the priciest, reportedly costing tens of thousands.

Ivan, eyeing the pile of gifts, turned to Kevin , "So, Kevin , what did you bring for Fiona?"

Kevin , unprepared for Fiona's birthday, had no gift. Even if he had known, he couldn't afford anything so expensive. Glaring at Ivan, he said nothing, realizing Ivan was trying to embarrass him. Regretting his bravado, he found himself in a tight spot.

Fiona stood by silently, thinking it was good for Ivan to teach Kevin a lesson, so he wouldn't dare joke with her again.

Seeing Kevin 's face clouded with discomfort, Ivan felt triumphant. "I guess you have nothing. Kevin , you think you're so great, but now you see you're nothing. Don't come near us if you can't keep up. Since it's Fiona's birthday, I'll let it slide. You had just kneeled down to propose to Fiona earlier, so now kneel and apologize to her with three kowtows. That'll be your gift. What do you think?"

The boys began to jeer, urging Kevin to kowtow. Fiona's expression changed; she hadn't expected Ivan to humiliate Kevin like this. Just as she was about to speak, a striking woman entered, her black eyes scanning the room. She laughed, "Wow, it's lively in here. Mind if I join the fun?"
