Chapter 1471
Kevin was beaten black and blue, handcuffed to the radiator, unable to move. He struggled to unlock the cuffs, but after a long, futile effort, they only tightened around his wrists. Frustrated, he had no choice but to give up.
Who would have thought that Edgar, with his meticulous mind and ruthless actions, truly fit the profile of a police officer? Kevin had really gotten himself into trouble this time.
However, Kevin also felt wronged. He knew he'd made a mistake but thought Edgar's reaction was excessively harsh. Treating him like a criminal without distinguishing right from wrong was absurd. He had classes to attend that afternoon. Did being a cop give Edgar the right to abuse his power?
Time crawled by, and suddenly, Kevin's phone rang in his pocket. With both hands cuffed, he couldn't answer it. The phone kept ringing, each call a reminder of his helplessness. In a short time, he'd received over a dozen calls. It could have been Laura, Albert, or Audrey; it didn't matter anymore. He knew he wouldn't be leaving before Cynthia woke up.
Edgar had skillfully placed the handcuffs so that Kevin couldn't fully stand or squat. Soon, his back ached, and discomfort spread through his body. His wrists were red and swollen from the tight cuffs. He silently cursed Edgar, thinking Cynthia's husband was too cruel, clearly torturing him on purpose.
All he had done was lick Cynthia's foot. Without his intervention, Cynthia would have been taken to a hotel room by Craig. It was a thankless effort. If he had known this would happen, he might as well have just had sex with her.
The next few hours were the most unbearable of Kevin's life. His legs were numb, and he desperately needed to pee. He cursed Edgar countless times, believing he wanted to kill him. His phone rang a few more times, but he couldn't care less. He even hoped Edgar would return soon, even if it meant another beating, just to end the agony.
The more Kevin thought about it, the angrier he got. He swore he'd make Edgar pay someday.
Kevin had no idea how much time had passed, but he felt on the brink of passing out. Suddenly, the guest room door burst open. Kevin shivered, worried Cynthia might also think he had assaulted her, and Edgar had come back for revenge.
"Kevin, are you okay?" a familiar voice called out. It was Mark, the captain of the detective team. Dressed in SWAT gear and holding a gun, he cautiously searched the room. Finding nothing unusual, he unlocked Kevin’s handcuffs and asked in a deep voice, "What happened? Were you kidnapped by criminals? Where are they?"
As it turned out, Laura hadn't seen Kevin in the afternoon class and called him. When he didn't answer, she initially thought he might be delayed by something and wasn't too worried. But as time passed and Kevin remained absent, Laura got anxious and informed their homeroom teacher, Audrey. Audrey tried calling Kevin herself but got no response. She asked around—Albert, Carl, and Samuel—but none of them knew where he was.
Audrey panicked and quickly found Alissa. Alissa was also concerned; any student's disappearance was serious business. While Audrey wanted to call the police, Alissa suggested waiting a bit, thinking Kevin might just be temporarily unreachable.
Laura, on the other hand, couldn't wait. She told her mother, Daisy. Considering that Kevin had previously helped the police solve two gang cases, Daisy feared he might have been kidnapped by a criminal gang. She quickly informed Mark, who was furious, thinking that criminal gangs were challenging him directly. He swiftly arranged for police forces and had the technical investigation department trace Kevin's phone to this small hotel.
"It's okay, Mark. It was just a misunderstanding," Kevin explained, though he omitted the part about licking Cynthia's foot. He didn't want to make a big deal out of it and embarrass himself.
"Edgar went too far. Using police equipment privately? Ridiculous," Mark frowned, seeing Kevin's bleeding wrists and swollen face. Even if Edgar thought Kevin had assaulted his wife, he should have called the police rather than taking matters into his own hands. This was clearly an abuse of authority. But given the circumstances, men often act impulsively, and Edgar was his colleague. He knew it depended on Daisy's reaction later.
Kevin sat on the bed for a while, his numb legs gradually regaining feeling. The rest were just minor injuries. Mark finally breathed a sigh of relief, fearing it might have been a revenge attack by criminal gangs. Given Kevin's close ties with Daisy, anything serious happening to him would jeopardize Mark's career as the detective team captain.
When they went downstairs, Kevin saw the hotel manager and two staff members being questioned by several detectives, feeling a bit embarrassed. Who would have thought a simple meal could escalate into such a fiasco?
Outside the hotel, there were two police cars and a sleek black Camry. A graceful, mature woman stepped out of the car, walked up to Kevin, and asked with concern, "Kevin, are you alright? What happened?"
The woman was, of course, Daisy. Since the situation inside the hotel was unclear, Mark had not allowed her to go upstairs, instead having her wait in the car.
"Daisy, I'm fine." Kevin blushed as Mark stepped forward to explain the situation.
Daisy's expression turned icy, and she snorted, "Edgar is reckless and foolish. If someone had malicious intent, would they answer his call? No, this can't go unpunished. I'll speak to your chief and see if he will take appropriate action."
Malcolm had dedicated his life to law enforcement, serving as the police chief for nearly twenty years. His protégés were scattered throughout the police system, with many promoted to higher positions in the city. The current police chief was once an ordinary officer in a remote town, and it was Malcolm who recognized his talent and promoted him.
If Daisy were to raise a fuss, even the police chief would not dare to ignore it. The fact that Edgar had used police equipment for personal reasons would at least result in a suspension and investigation.
Kevin quickly intervened, "Daisy, I'm fine. Let's just drop it. I was at fault too."
During those hours in the guest room, Kevin had reflected on his recent behavior. He had been involved with several women, creating difficult situations for many men: Zachary, Jason, Grant, Andrew, Oliver, Byron, Jasper, Barrett, and Devon. He had never been caught and felt a misplaced sense of pride, thinking he was invincible. But after being taught a harsh lesson by Edgar, he realized he had been recklessly flirting with danger. His luck had kept him safe so far, but he understood how close he was to disaster. If the husbands discovered he had slept with their wives, they would tear him to pieces. Perhaps this was a form of divine retribution.
Moreover, if the incident became widely known and everyone discovered he had licked Sean's mother's foot, he would be humiliated and unable to continue at Sunset Valley High School. Audrey, Alissa, and Laura would lose respect for him. For these reasons, he wanted to keep things quiet.
"That's not acceptable," Daisy said, gently touching Kevin's swollen face, her heart aching. "Look at how badly you've been beaten. And he's a police officer, hitting a kid this hard. Is he even human?"
Mark hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Daisy, let me handle this. You know the situation in the department. It's best if you stay out of it. I'll talk to Edgar and make sure he apologizes to Kevin. I promise you'll get a satisfactory explanation."
"Alright," Daisy agreed with a slight nod, sighing inwardly. The police department was currently divided into two factions, with the police chief and deputy chief secretly competing. Behind them were the deputy County Executive and County Executive vying for control of the department. During this sensitive period, she indeed shouldn't get involved. She turned to Kevin, her eyes soft and kind. "Let's go, Kevin. I'll take you to the hospital for a check-up."
Meanwhile, at Sean's house, Cynthia finally woke up, feeling a splitting headache and parched throat. She found herself in her bedroom and was puzzled. She remembered being taken away by Kevin. Did he bring her back? But he didn't know her address.
She got up and went to the living room, where she saw her husband Edgar sitting on the sofa, smoking. There were over a dozen cigarette butts on the table, and the air was thick with smoke.
"Edgar, why are you smoking so much? You know I can't stand the smell of smoke." Cynthia coughed, covering her nose and opened the balcony window for ventilation. "Why didn't you go to work? How did I get back?"
"You should ask yourself that," Edgar said sternly. "You always claim to be busy with business. What, are you discussing business in bed with someone else?"
"What nonsense are you talking about? When did I ever cheat on you?" Cynthia's eyebrows furrowed, her face cold. "Edgar, explain yourself. What do you mean?"
"You have the nerve to ask me." Edgar stubbed out his cigarette, his face dark. "If it weren't for me, you would have been assaulted without even knowing it. How can you be so careless, offering yourself like that, and to a student no less? Have some dignity, will you?"
"What are you talking about? I don't understand." Cynthia was stunned. She tried to recall the events of the lunch, stammering, "What student? I really didn't do anything."
"Are you genuinely clueless, or are you pretending?" Edgar sneered. "Let me remind you. I called you, but you didn't answer. Later, someone else picked up and said you were at a hotel. When I got there, you were sleeping soundly on the bed, and that student was in your room. You should know what you did."
