"You knew it was me, that's why you hesitated to come in?" Fiona fixed her gaze on Kevin, asking, "But I must thank you. If you hadn't barged in, I wouldn't have known how to handle that annoying Ivan. By the way, did he cause you any trouble afterwards? He's quite petty, so be careful."
"Yeah, I got it." Kevin found himself a bit dazed as he looked into Fiona's bright eyes, unsure if her candid demeanor was just her personality or a sign of special regard for him. Indeed, earning the attention of Sunset Valley High School's campus beauty was every guy's dream. Especially as they sat on the football field at night, there was a hint of a romantic rendezvous in the air. Having an intelligent and mature girlfriend like Fiona would surpass even Laura's appeal.
However, Kevin soon berated himself for his greed. Despite having Laura, he was foolishly thinking about Fiona. He had ignored his sister's warnings not to get too close to Natalie, behaving intimately with her behind Audrey's back. Perhaps those actions he took were inevitably leading to today's outcomes.
"Time sure flies. I remember when I first joined Sunset Valley High School in grade nine, now I'm in grade twelve," Fiona sighed as she leaned back with her hands supporting her, gazing at the luminous moon in the sky. "Kevin, have you ever thought about what you'll be like in ten years?"
"I haven't." Kevin was momentarily stunned. Ten years later, he would likely have graduated from university, possibly returned to Starfall Town for an ordinary job. If he couldn't get into college, he might help out at his mother's clothing company. The future was uncertain.
"How about thinking about it now?" Fiona blinked and continued, "I often ponder on where I'll be in ten years. I dream of being an explorer, discovering the world's most mysterious places—like the pyramids, the Bermuda Triangle, Dallol Volcano, Easter Island, Loch Ness, Death Valley. But reality likely dictates I'll end up as just an ordinary researcher. I'm more interested in physics. By the way, have you read 'The Three-Body Problem'?"
"No, I haven't," Kevin shook his head, feeling a bit puzzled. He might not have read 'The Three-Body Problem,' but he had seen plenty of female nudity.
"You haven't read 'The Three-Body Problem'?" Fiona seemed disappointed. After a moment of thought, she proposed, "How about this: tomorrow night, come over to my place, and I'll lend you the book to read. I guarantee you won't be disappointed."
"Alright." Kevin felt somewhat embarrassed. As the class representative for English, it was quite shameful not to have heard of a book Fiona praised highly. Intrigued by her enthusiasm, Kevin was certain the book must be worthwhile.
Suddenly, a faint sound of footsteps neared, and laughter followed. Both Fiona and Kevin rose simultaneously and peered ahead, spotting Ivan and Yasmine entwined in an intimate embrace amidst the bushes.
"You little slut, your boobs got bigger again. Did you mess around with Paul?" Ivan sneered as he groped Yasmine's soft breasts beneath her clothing. "I saw you two messing around yesterday."
"Nonsense, Paul just gave me a gift," Yasmine giggled, playfully responding. "If you care so much about me, why not make me your girlfriend? What does Fiona have that I don't? Can she match what I can do?"
"Of course not! You know nothing. Fiona's father is the governor now. If your dad were a governor, things would be different," Ivan's hands roamed over Yasmine's body, his lips on hers as he swiftly undid his pants and raised Yasmine's skirt, revealing her pale behind. They were preparing for a tryst on the field.
Fiona gasped softly and quickly turned away, unwilling to witness the lewd scene. Her heart raced with a mix of anger and disgust. She resented Ivan’s persistence, especially now that her father was governor.
"You little slut, I'll teach you a lesson today. Stop trying to be seductive," Ivan declared, thrusting his erect member towards Yasmine. Witnessing Fiona's furrowed brow, Kevin grabbed a stone from the ground and hurled it at Ivan’s buttocks, hitting him square.
"Agh!" Ivan yelped, clenching his buttocks and scanning the surroundings in panic. Yasmine hastened to adjust her skirt, her expression drained.
Kevin quietly led Fiona away from the field and swiftly left the school, running until they reached the entrance of an upscale residential area.
With beads of sweat on her forehead and a flushed face, Fiona panted lightly, her chest heaving. Looking at Kevin with a smile, she said, "Thank you for helping me out with Ivan. He's such a pest."
Kevin, taken aback by Fiona's captivating expression, was momentarily lost for words. After tidying up her slightly disheveled hair, Fiona bit her lip and asked, "Kevin, do you like me?"
"Uh, um..." Kevin was stunned, his heart racing. While Fiona's beauty and figure were unmatched among the girls at Sunset Valley High School, he had never considered such a possibility. After all, Fiona came from a much wealthier family than his own. He hadn't even dared to pursue Laura, let alone someone like Fiona.
"What's with the stammering? I just want to know if you like me," Fiona asked impatiently. "Could you be straightforward?"
Kevin sensed Fiona's interest in him, but he didn't dare complicate things further. With his sister's situation already in disarray, he was hesitant to venture into new territories. Bravely, he replied, "I already have a girlfriend."
"Laura, right?" Fiona wasn't surprised. With a grin, she added, "You're quite honest, much better than that Ivan guy. But who knows what the future holds. Thank you for escorting me home. Bye." With a wave, she entered the gate of the exclusive residential area.
Kevin felt bewildered by Fiona's actions and couldn't quite decipher her final words. Yet, he was too tired to dwell on it, hurrying back home. As expected, his sister wasn't there; she was likely still upset and might not return.
Regret filled Kevin's mind; he shouldn't have gone to the lake with Natalie or kept photos on his phone. Actions have consequences, and secrets eventually come to light.
But what to do now? Must he return to the initial relationship with his sister? Kevin sat on the couch, lost in thought, feeling that things hadn't reached a point of despair just yet.
